C of E to discuss benefits for partners of gay clergy

The Church of England might not be ready to celebrate openly gay clergy, but Anglican bishops are poised to consider whether to extend the rights and benefits now afforded to married priests’ spouses to same-sex partners.

The proposal is to be debated by bishops and senior clergy next month at the church’s general synod. The Telegraph of London has a story:

Traditionalists have expressed strong opposition to the move, which they claim would give official recognition to homosexual relationships.

They warn that affording equal treatment to heterosexual and homosexual couples would undermine the Church's teaching on marriage.

At present, the Church bars clergy from being in active gay relationships, although it bowed to pressure to allow them to enter civil partnerships on the condition that they are celibate.

Liberals believe that the motion, to be unveiled this week, could be a major breakthrough in securing rights for gay clergy.

It calls on the Archbishops' Council, chaired by Dr. Rowan Williams, to introduce changes that would "provide for pension benefits to be paid to the surviving civil partners of deceased clergy on the same basis as they are currently paid to surviving spouses.”

The 2003 consecration of an openly gay Episcopal bishop in New Hampshire brought long-simmering divisions over homosexuality within the Anglican Communion out into the open. Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, warned the Episcopal Church last month against consenting to the consecration of Mary Glasspool, a lesbian Maryland priest elected bishop suffragan by the Diocese of Los Angeles.

hmmmmm. An institution predicated on love, seeking to protect its employees' loved ones. Absolutely heretical!

An institution that says that it follows God's word deciding not to follow it. Why go to church there? What it should say it that the benefits will be provided to celibate, opposite sexed civil partners, not same sexed ones. I applaud them for letting priests marry.

Greetings, at this year's UPO Prayer Breakfast honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Rep. Eleanor H. Norton made this statement, as her opening comment, "I don't read the Bible; I read King." Well, King as we all know is dead, but even if she accepted his life long struggle and beliefs; she cannot leave out the Bible. I also wonder what Dr. King would say to her statement. In fact, I would love to challenge and question her farther on what she said. Her statement was disrespectful to Dr. King, Christian believers and those who love righteousness, peace and the word of God. I know the subject you are discussing is Civil Rights and Senator Kennedy.

How far do you think we would have gotten if it weren't for Dr. King, his God and his faith? I would love to see further discussion on this. Council Member Gray said also at the breakfast, we don't want to approve of things that divide us. So, is it okay to trash the word of God, and disrespect it? This country was founded on the premise of "IN GOD WE TRUST." That statement is on our money. We clearly don't trust in God anymore. We support same sex marriages, abortion on demand, gays raising children, and introducing them into corruption. We have forsaken the bridge that brought us over. Homosexuals are not under privileged, or poor, or even deprived. They have been around forever. Only difference it that they didn't force their ways on others to acknowledge as correct. We are clearly on the downward trail. If you are familiar with the Bible, recall Sodom and Gomorrah. They two cities were totally destroyed by God for this heinous sin. Members of this DC Council even went as far as to say that God accepts this love.

There are three definitions of the word love; agape love, this is when one lays down his life for another, such as the love of Christ for mankind, or the love of husband for his wife; or a mother for her child--sacrificial. Another definition for love is Philia as in Philadelphia, brotherly love-love for conrades, friends fellows or sisters. The last one s the one that fits homosexuals and that is eros, eros refers to erotica, or lust that is purely sensual in its nature and is usually short lived, or until the next playmate comes along. Goal of most is to defile children and youth and turn them to this degrading lifestyle.

God never accepted this lust as love, see the book of Romans in the New Testament, Romans, Chapter 1, verses 21 – 32. "Because that, when they knew God, they gloried him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and Changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things, Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections; for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman burned in their lust one toward another, men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving within themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them up over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant-breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them." And that is the Word of the Lord.

We can choose to ignore this and count God as nothing, but that is to our undoing with dire consequences as stated above. We don't need God to bring judgment on us. We should have wisdom and take heed to him and bless him and seek his mercy. We should not keep saying this, “God bless America.” That is like a disobedient child asking his parent for a reward for his disobedience. No, America should bless and seek God with her whole heart, and repent.

I have a dream that Christ will come back and I believe that the dream will come true.

L Smithman,

Your religious prejudice aside, reserving agape for heterosexual couples (Is every straight marriage free of physical desire? So sad.) and eros for same-sex coupling is mightily naive and incredibly offensive. Your ignorance of the innumerable committed, monogamous same-sex unions that endure for decades is apparent ... and regrettable. And should be embarrassing to you.

Oh. And tell me again about heterosexual marriage's stellar record for fidelity and constancy....
