In surprise vote, Swiss ban minarets

Swiss voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional ban on minarets on Sunday, the Associated Press reports, barring construction of the iconic mosque towers in a surprise vote that put Switzerland at the forefront of a European backlash against a growing Muslim population.

Muslim groups in Switzerland and abroad condemned the vote as biased and anti-Islamic, AP writer Alexander G. Higgins writes. Business groups said the decision hurt Switzerland's international standing and could damage relations with Muslim nations and wealthy investors who bank, travel and shop there.

"The Swiss have failed to give a clear signal for diversity, freedom of religion and human rights," said Omar Al-Rawi, integration representative of the Islamic Denomination in Austria, which said its reaction was "grief and deep disappointment."

About 300 people turned out for a spontaneous demonstration on the square outside parliament, holding up signs saying, "That is not my Switzerland," placing candles in front of a model of a minaret and making another minaret shape out of the candles themselves.

"We're sorry," said another sign. A young woman pinned to her jacket a piece of paper saying, "Swiss passport for sale."

Prof Aighedd,
You are a nitwit--the answer to the problem? Put pressure on the Islamic fascists to allow other religions into their countries--fight for more churches and temples in the Islamic world if that is what you want--although I personally believe religions are incendiary and worship should be private and personal. Yet, I love churches, temples and minarets--testaments to man's creativity and love of art. To act exactly like those you condemn--that's what you want? What's the use? If you don't want Muslims where the Caucasians who are Christians live, then change immigration laws and don't let the Muslims in. But after letting people in, to indulge in religious oppression is antithetical to democratic principles. And minarets are absolutely gorgeous. In Spain, Portugal and in Russia, we can see the onion domes, the arches, tessellations, the floral patterns, and the skyward climbing spires learned from the Islamic world and copied, in many historic buildings, including in churches and in cathedrals. We have been enriched through the centuries by Islamic art and architecture. They are the legacy of our human ancestors to people of all religions and all walks of life. The Swiss are big fat fools but I always knew this of their so called neutrality--a lie--they are deeply prejudiced, fearful, xenophobic and troubled. This will fail--the Swiss banks rely on the Saudis to fill their coffers. A Saudi boycott will have them quaking. Money speaks Aighedd--so does oil--if the Saudis had neither, by now the Europeans and the Americans would have forced them into capitulation and churches will rising up across Saudi and other Islamic landscapes.

Since when is it the religious majority should be asked to approve of the minority rights and religion?
had it been the case there would have been only 1 big religion in the world.
this is a gross breach of human rights, and freedom of worship, and a slap in the face of all moderate muslims around the world that took place in the heart of the west.

i doubt all those who cracked our head bragging about democracy will voice a small concern about this dispicable action.

and all those who say they do it why shouldnt we I say watch something else besides Fox vews..have you rednecks left your village once?..there are Giant churches in EVERY muslim country in the world (except saudi/their equivalent of Vatican)..there is a law in egypt that you cant fund building a mosque unless you fund building a church in the same neiborhood..if you walk in damascus or Karachi streets you will find hundreds of churches..
this world is full of loud ignorant people

The Muslim extremists are never going to allow other churches to be built in their countries. They do like it when mosques are built in other countries. And they love it when liberals in the name of fairness will allow it in America. I say God speed to these decisions by the European countries. Conform to the country you are in. America was built on Christian principles and was successful because of it. Now we have a Muslim supporting president, but he wont be in for another term, and he will have a lot less support after next year.

Clay - America was built on freedom and respect for the rights of everyone. America was founded by primarily Christians but not as a Christian nation. Your argument of conforming to the nation you are in is hollow since the Europeans who came here didn't do it. They forced their views on those who were already here.

Well there is enough evidence of us being founded as a Christian nation for me (In God We Trust, etc). Were the founding fathers correct to conform to Native American practices (the sun is God, animals have spirits) or were they best serving Native Americans by founding this nation as a Christian one? If not, we have still been a Christian nation for long enough for people to respect it, no matter how many mosques they want to build. Thanks.

“In God We Trust” didn’t show up on US coins until 1864 during strong Christian sentiment emerging during the Civil War. It did not become the official U.S. national motto until after the passage of an Act of Congress in 1956. It had nothing to do with the founding of the country. The country was founded on the basis of freedom. That includes freedom of all religions not just Christian. There is also a difference in preaching the Good News and forcing it on a people. You need to accept that many so called Christians violated the very teachings of Christianity by taking land and possessions from the Native Americans as well as other abuses. Freedom of religion means that any religion is free to practice its faith or build churches, synagogues, mosques or other structures. It also means atheists are free to live as they wish. As for respect for being a Christian nation that’s completely wrong as well my friend.

Sad to say, we no longer have Catholic Countries since Vatican 2, May that situation be reversed soon.

1)The Swiss can decide what they want in their own country.

I wonder the double standards of Europe. When , few months bfore, the cartoons of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were published in papers and when the whole muslim community is protesting against this incident then u ppl were talking about freedom…freedom…freedom Nw tell me is there no freedom for muslims…? Are the muslims in switzerland/ Europe not swiss/ European?

2) In the last 60 years, how many churches have been constructed in the muslim countries? Zero!

If u don’t know the churches built in Muslim countries then y u miss guide the readers…? In capital, Islamabad, of Islamic republic of Pakistan…there are three big churches. This city is newly built in late 1970’s having population less than 500,000. And the Christian population is abt 3.4%(for 15000 Christians). Further, search for information to update urself.

3) In the last 60 years, how many mosques have been constructed in Europe? Thousands!

Why u consider muslims as outsider..? wonder….! They are the citizen and born in ur country. Just look around and see urself…how many mosques do you find…!

5) When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

Y u want to see Muslims doing things against their faith in countries where they live…? Is it crime if they protect their values living with others…? R they acceptable for you only if they behave, live and act like u do…!
