Muslim organizations condemn Fort Hood attack

National Muslim organizations are attempting to distance themselves from Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hassan, the officer accused in the shootings Thursday at Fort Hood, Texas, in which 13 were killed and dozens wounded.

They are also urging Muslims to protect themselves from a backlash, and asking law enforcement authorities to step up security outside mosques, community centers and schools.

Soldiers who witnessed the shootings say Hassan, identified in media reports as the Muslim son of Palestinian immigrants, shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire, base commander Lt. Gen. Robert Cone said Friday. The phrase is Arabic for “God is great.”

Hassan, an Army psychiatrist, reportedly was critical of the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and had been harassed by fellow soldiers for being a Muslim, according to media reports.

Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, condemned what he called a “cowardly attack.”

“Right now, we call on all Americans to assist those who are responding to this atrocity,” Awad told reporters in Washington late Thursday. “We must ensure that the wounded are treated and the families of those who were murdered have an opportunity to mourn.

“No political or religious ideology could ever justify or excuse such wanton and indiscriminate violence. The attack was particularly heinous in that it targeted our nation’s all-volunteer army that includes thousands of Muslims in all services. We again offer our thoughts and prayers for the victims and sincere condolences for the families of those killed or injured.”

Mary Rose Oakar, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, issued a similar statement.

"This attack is absolutely deplorable,” she said. “ADC has been consistent and on record in condemning any attacks aimed at innocents, no matter who the victims or the perpetrators may be. Such violence is morally reprehensible and has nothing to do with any religion, race, ethnicity, or national origin. ADC urges the FBI and law enforcement agencies to make every effort to see that justice is served."

"ADC also calls upon law enforcement agencies to provide immediate protection for all Mosques, community centers, schools, and any locations that may be identified or misidentified with being Arab, Muslim, South Asian or Sikh as a clear backlash has already started. The actions of a few should not invite a backlash on innocent members of any community and we urge law enforcement and others to keep that in mind.”

Awad, of CAIR, urged calm.

“The motive of the attacker is not yet known. We urge all Americans to remain calm in reaction to this tragic event and to demonstrate once again what is best about America ¬- our nation’s ability to remain unified even in times of crisis. We urge national political and religious leaders and media professionals to set a tone of calm and unity.

“Unfortunately, based on past experience, we also urge American Muslims, and those who may be perceived to be Muslim, to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves, their families and their religious institutions from possible backlash.

I think Major Hasan is obviously mentally unstable. As a physician he is supposed to save lives not take lives.
He was born in the USA and the fact that he is a muslim should not be a factor in his behavior

. There are close to 5 million muslims in the USA and we cannot label all of them as killers.
All religions including the muslim religion borrow the famous commandment from the ten Commandments " Thou Shall not kill"
The Quran goes further. "The taking of one innocent life is the same as if you have killed every human being on earth.

The weirdos like the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and most movements have misinterpreted the message of the Quran to recurit members in the name of God and justify their heinous acts.
The media must play its role in promoting harmony among religions as was propagated by pre-partition India's great leader Mahatma Gandhi.
He went on a hunger strike to stop majority Hindus from attacking Minority Muslims in India. He succeeded but was murdered by a Hindu extremist.

It is indeed most unfortunate that violence has become a banner for our land of the brave.

Every human being must analyze the murder of a fellow human being. Each death brings with it , grief and untold misery for an entire family, leaving in its fold extinguished futures for children and spouses. Oh what a loss for the families of the fallen soldiers at Mount Hood. How unfair.
May God bless these families and give them the courage to face this tragedy.
Amen

How come we never had attacks like this when I was a kid back in the 50's? Because Muslims were overseas. Now we have a lot more people here from overseas, and that includes radical Muslims. I say that the president should give an Easter message as well as a message on Ramadan.

Clay you are a confirmed xenophobe. There were murderers and con men galore in the fifties and many were cradle Christians. I am glad you had an idyllic childhood. I can imagine you, in your knickerbockers, an obedient child, holding your mama's hand, walking to church, your mama happy that all your friends are incorruptible Christians, Jesus looking down on you from above, thinking to Himself, "How have I begotten these misbegotten souls?"

Clay – I’m quite sure we had Muslims here in the 50’s. This man was born in this country. It was his parents who came here probably to escape the violence and other problems in the Middle East. How exactly would an Easter message have avoided what happened?

When the president gives a Ramadan message, it encourages violent Muslims as well as peaceful ones. In this sense, he is at least partly responsible for what happened at Fort Hood. We certainly would not have had to be concerned about this with past presidents. And another Muhammed is executed for what he did. The American public is getting sick of it. I dont believe that the president will be re-elected, and I also believe that the Republican party will pretty much sweep next year's elections.

How exactly do you figure that a peace message makes the President partly responsible? We had terrorist attacks while Clinton and Bush were both in office. Aren't we as Christians supposed to advocate peace and forgiveness?

Bravo Ravensfan--you are at your best against Clay. The man suffers from deep seated anxieties about beliefs that don't resemble his own. And he hates Obama. Deep seated anxieties about the President too. Coming from his knickerbocker days growing up in the fifties in a lily white unpolluted neighborhood.

So Obama's message on Ramadan is what drove Hasan to his massacre? Wow Clay, I think the CIA should hire you on the spot and send you to Afghanistan. There the Taliban would welcome you with open arms as a kindred spirit. You possess their same primitive narrow minded hatred of the OTHER.

The difference is the president is advocating peace as a Muslim, not as a Christian. I dont think it helps radical Muslims at all. I think it encourages them. If the American president is supporting Islam, then they see their cause as being even more certain in their minds. If they are told that the Muslim nation was created by God to be nothing but a thorn in the side to Israel and that they arent God's chosen people, you can argue that it makes them worse all you want. I believe it may open some eyes. It doesnt support the Muslim cause, peaceful or non-peaceful. Thanks.

You are so garbled you don't know which end is up Clay. You need a brain transplant. Even if a goat became the donor that may be an improvement.

Well let me tell you this. One of the bigwigs in the Obama adminstration (Secretary of the Army?) said that we need more Muslims in the armed forces. People involved with the soldier who did the shootings at Ft. Hood said that he showed many signs of extremist behavior. Many think he wasnt turned in because it wasnt politically correct to do so. And you think Obama isnt partly responsible for what happened at Ft. Hood? Think again.

Clay – Where are you getting this information? I haven’t heard anything even on the most conservative articles I’ve read that gives any credibility to your posts.

It was on PBS. One of the political shows that discusses what is going on in politics, etc. I dont remember the name of it. There were four guests and a host. You know what? I think it may be time for you to leave me and my posts alone.

Clay - Sorry if my questioning your source of information bothers you.

Of course we need more Muslims in the army Clay--we want to know what our enemy Muslims are up to-- we are also in the peculiar position of needing capable Arab speakers--Muslims and non Muslims to spy for us, translate for us, soothe the enemies' feathers for us, and nation build for us where we want people to flourish and keep their minds off terrorist plots. Not all Muslims are demons and they are American citizens just like you. When they volunteer, if they pass physical and mental muster, the army cannot discriminate by denying them enlistment privilege. What's your beef? Are you willing to learn Arabic, volunteer and fight in these faraway places O Christian soldier? Give the people on these blogs a break--don't go on whining about Obama, accusing him of being a Muslim sympathizer and a terrorist apologist. He, unlike you is well aware of the simple fact that this country is diverse--he cannot as President step on everyone's toes. Therefore he treads carefully. Yes, we must get tougher on Islamic terror and we must be aware that there are plenty in this country who are good fodder for al Qaeda but should we blackball all Muslims because they have not accepted Jesus as their savior--are you trying to say that anyone who does not worship Jesus should be condemned and hung out to dry--you are addlepated and bumbling as Littel put it--for a Christian you love to stir up the hatred against Obama and against all Muslims--not for any reason other than Obama's middle name is Hussein, Obama gave a "happy Ramadan" message to all Muslims and a lone Muslim went off on a shooting spree in Fort Hood. You know nothing about the Muslim people, the Middle East or South Asia but that won't prevent you from yapping away to glory about all things Muslim being bad for America and all things Christian being good--you my friend are as un-Christian as they come-- a big fat bigot about all matters not Christian-- your bigotry, although it is accompanied by protests galore about love for all mankind, seeps out of every pore in your Christian body that it reeks of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees that Jesus condemned.

No matter what I say, people around te Ft Hood shooter saying that people were afraid to turn him in because he was Muslim and it may not be politically correct, if a Christian is saying it satan always tries to convince people that the Christian is crazy or a bigot. It is childish and untrue. Muslims have a right to practice their religion in this country as does anyone else, even though they arent God's people. I am not stopping them. The president is slanted, like it or not.
