I am glad to hear that the US Conference of Catholic Bishops will launch a campaign in support of immigration reform. Religious voices need to be heard on this important human rights issue.

It is not only a matter of justice for immigrants, but an economic issue for our society. Immigrants are taxpayers and consumers. They buy homes and start businesses. They often invest in businesses in inner cities and help to revitalize economicaly depressed areas. We need their talent and their investment in our communities.

That Sen.Harry Reid (D-NV) Speaker N. Pelosi (D-CA), Sen. John McCain R-AZ will be involved with pushing through this next AMNESTY and--THE PEOPLE--will be last to know? How many more billions is it going to cost in raised taxes to legitimize 20 to 30 million foreign nationals? Currently we have two wars on the agenda, a health care package with loopholes for illegal immigrants, Cap & trade and global warming? Not forgetting that Obama promised fair free trade agreements and a bunch of other planned money spending free-for--all's?

As I stated, their is no need to spend millions of dollars the country doesn't have--but prints it anyway and then tries to pass another Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill. These jokers in Washington can save taxpayers millions instead of discussing a whole new bill, just by amending parts of the 1986 law? Including in this amendment process, would be up-front information for the public to decide on? Those politicians who have been poisoned monetary by heavyweight business lobbyists and the hundreds of anti-American, open border extremists. As with Sen.Gutierrez D-IL who should not be present, as he reneged on his oath of allegiance to the United States. E-Verify should be a mandatory law, for not just new employees but for everybody who draws a payroll check. The police engagement 287 (g) law should also be fully funded by the feds and not just half measures, so that many counties can refuse to execute the illegal immigrant arrest law.

Only with employers that have been instrumental in operating E-Verify should be allowed to display the E-Verify notice. Any person who illegally displays the placard, should be heavily fined if they violate this federal law. Senior Citizens could be hired by the feds nationwide, to inspect 1-9's at businesses and audit documents in each region of the country. None of this will be any good if --AMNESTY--is passed as millions more illegal immigrants will be scaling the fences, or under the pretext of being a tourist gain entry to America? The last AMNESTY turned into a joke against the American taxpayer. CORPORATE WELFARE or ENTITLEMENTS are the best way to explain this, because of the illegal cheap labor market thats poured through gaping laws in enforcement. Brittanicus you are a fear monger and a panic striker. Illegal immigrants, once granted amnesty will not automatically disappear from their low paying jobs into better paying ones to displace cradle Americans. That is a myth because illegal immigrants are also hobbled by language problems.

But you are right about some of the other things you write. Amnesty for 30 million illegals is a staggering burden on our economy, especially if under the new health care reform, all of them must purchase health care. Health care will be government subsidized for them, because of their poverty level.

By the same token, the illegals are not mere freeloaders. They work hard and claim they pay their share of taxes. The problem therefore is more complex than your one sided perspective.

The bishops will claim this is a humanitarian issue, a catastrophe brewing right in our backyards, a cruelty our stringent laws are foisting on these poor folks who have come to our shores only to further themselves through hard work.

They contribute to our economy, they bring a vibrant culture, a few may be criminals but many slave on our farms, on our roads and in our restaurants, most are productive and law abiding but they are vilified for their efforts and effaced into our underground. Since they are not going anywhere soon, they should be brought out from their underground enclaves and given legal status--so the bishops will argue.

Does this necessarily mean a green card or citizenship they will ask. The illegals can be given temporary work permits. Their path to citizenship can be made hard and long . E Verify can be instituted, as you suggest, to punish employers who hire the illegals without work permits. The bishops will say, for you, reform seems to conjure up amnesty because it happened once before but the circumstances are different now and Congress will suffer a terrible backlash if it creates a comprehensive immigration reform bill synonymous with amnesty.

Having told you what the bishops will say Brittanicus, I admit I see some of your points. I am astounded that there is so much sympathy among politicians and the Catholic hierarchy for illegal immigration, the key word here is illegal, especially out of Mexico and the rest of Central America. I agree with Wanda, the fact these immigrants are Catholic has a lot to do with the political interference of the bishops on their behalf. If this illegal immigration were to be occurring out of Pakistan or India or Ethiopia or the Congo the Catholic bishops wouldn't care a hoot about reuniting families, keeping people together or other tear jerker moralities.

Illegal entry aside, there are many who've entered the country legally, have applied for work visa sponsorships or are beneficiaries of family visas. This group of immigrants has abided by the law and yet are still waiting years or even decades to get their green cards. Should they be put in the same boat as those who entered illegally? The backlogs and processing wait times are so extensive and long, that 15, 20 years later, they're still waiting to start their life. It's a waste of the intellectual, social and financial capital they bring to society, despite following the law. It's a loss to the US as a whole to not benefit from their valuable contribution. By denying immigration reform, you're rightfully punishing those who enter illegally, but wrongfully punishing those who have followed the law.

The poster above says that it is a myth that illegals won't take the better paying jobs. Obviously that person doesn't live in California. Half the jobs require you speak Spanish, and even if you don't speak English they'll hire you. I know this for a fact. And these jobs aren't just working in the fields, they're the jobs that have been so saturated with Hispanics both legal and illegal that they can't have someone who speaks English because no one else speaks English. Auto repair, plumbers assistant, landscaping, cable tv, you name it, they hire the illegals before they will hire an American and that includes American Hispanics.

Here in Luzerne County we have a large population of disabled veterans & elderly which depend on the pitiful yearly COLA increase. The property tax reassessment county wide during this recession recently raised mortgages & rent at least $100 a month. Pa. lost the price cap on electricity, minimum $35 dollars a month increase only if you do not have any electric heat. Sewer & water both another hefty increase following the 2009 increase of $80 dollars, soon another minimum of $40 dollars a month. Millions have been stolen here, a few hundred thousand here, five hundred thousand there, embezzlement, and missing sewer authority funds. The only ones doing fine here are the Clans of high school drop out illegal border jumpers, nine to 12 adults in one house all still working 16 hours a day. It is costing me a $137 more a month just from the tax reassessment to view the Clan living in the rental property next door. Even though the FBI busted our Court house all the low income older homeowners must pay again, and pay so much more just to keep their family home. Many of us have nothing left but our blood, and those of us who use VA healthcare can not even sell our blood because no one in their right mind would want to buy it. As a house bound Catholic disabled veteran with a Clan of illegal border jumper’s right next door I ask why just a few million Veterans are made to live in H E LL while our government helps 23 million illegal border jumper swine.

Just remember, 90% of immigrants now days are coming here for financial gain only. My family history dates back to when individuals were seeking freedom and things of that nature.
