Abortion support declines, nation now evenly split
The number of Americans expressing support for abortion is clearly declining, leaving the nation now evenly divided on the issue, according to results from a Pew survey released on Thursday.
The survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press finds that finds that the abortion debate has receded in importance among liberals while opposition to abortion has grown more firm among conservatives.
From the Pew release:
In Pew Research Center polls in 2007 and 2008, supporters of legal abortion clearly outnumbered opponents. Now Americans are evenly divided on the question, and there have been modest increases in the numbers who favor reducing abortions or making them harder to obtain.
Other notable findings from the survey, which was conducted from Aug. 11 to 27 among a total of 4,013 adults:
• One of the largest declines in support for legal abortion has occurred among white, non-Hispanic Catholics who attend Mass at least weekly. Substantial change has also occurred among Democratic men (with support for legal abortion down nine points) but not among Democratic women.• Even as the public expresses support for finding a middle ground on abortion, most Americans are quite certain that their own position on abortion is the right one, with only one-quarter saying they ever wonder about their views on the issue.
• Furthermore, many people on both sides of the issue say that the opposite point of view on abortion is not a “respectable” opinion for someone to hold.
• Overall, roughly three in ten Americans think that President Barack Obama will handle the abortion issue about right, while four in ten are unaware of his position on the issue. About two in ten worry that Obama will go too far in supporting abortion rights.

Comments
It is a shame if less support for abortion has perhaps resulted from people fed up with Democratic policies such as health care and not from a real change in people's hearts because of their faith towards God and His word. I suppose if I was the child about to be aborted I would take life any way I could get it. It is the pendulum that swings back and forth among some American voters. They go this way and then that way and then back again. Whatever is best for their jobs and wallets every election. People are tired of Bush, lets try the other side. If people voted with their hearts toward God our country would have less problems.

Clay, you wouldn't take life any way you could get it, because you wouldn't be a conscious, sentient being.
Lots of people vote and act w/r/t whatever god they worship, see 9/11/2001.

Ben you are a smart man--Clay has been born again and again on these blogs-he is a broken record. Come on Clay--life anyway you can get it? I know a woman who has taken care of a disabled child - she has been at it with no financial or physical help from anyone. She's a broken woman, who has been bitten, scratched and wounded by her violent and mentally undeveloped daughter for years. Her only relief comes when the daughter is knocked out with tranquilizers and hypnotics. You are a terribly ignorant and opinionated witness for Jesus who has but lived half a life and has never seen the other side of your own religious existence--enough to send the poor messiah into hiding from your utterly dogmatic fervor.

Upwards of 90 percent of American women use some sort of contraceptive at some point during their fertile years. Sadly, they might not realize that the device or chemicals they are putting in their bodies causes an early abortion a certain percentage of the time. Surgical abortions may be going down, but this has been more than made up for by the increased popularity of Plan B, the IUD and "the pill", all of which can and do provide abortions for the users. The Guttmacher Institute issued a report in January 2008, falsely claiming that the abortion rate was falling. Political analysts surmised that this was an election year ploy designed to take the heat off of pro-abort candidates -- such as Mr.Obama. More than half of the Catholic voters supported Obama, which suggests that the Guttmacher people knew what they were doing.

Hopefully, Catholics and others wont be so easily fooled when it comes time for elections next year. The economy is important, but liberal candidates make us realize how out of touch with God and reality that government can get.

This is a statistical anomaly based in a skewed and biased survey (as nearly all are).
Try this Q and see what the response is:
would you rather have abortions performed in safe conditions (like medical facilities with qualified staff) or in unsafe conditions (like the back room of a hairdresser) ?
That is the issue. It always has been, it always will be and is why the false fight against the rights claiming a superior "morality" is and always shall be wrong.
safe, legal and rare.

The question posed by MrRational is a false dichotomy. Abortions do not happen in the "back room of hairdressers". That is nothing more than fearmongering.
Furthermore, data from the CDC shows that prior to Roe v. Wade, starting in the late 1930's, the illegal abortion death rate fell rather precipitously. Abortions in the U.S. have long since been "safe", regardless of whether they're legal or illegal.
"Safe, legal and rare" is a misnomer. It should be "Legal and abundant", because that's exactly what has happened via legalized abortion. It's anything but rare. It's the most common medical procedure in the U.S., and only about half of the population will be able to get one.

Panhandler - Damn, I never thought about all those women (1/2 of the population) hogging all the abortions to themselves. How selfish of them. We can't have something like that going on, can we?

Panhandler, perhaps you really are as ignorant of the facts as your comments imply. I'll give the rest of the readers here the benefit of the doubt and not paste excerpts from the document below which is put here just for YOU!
There are many others far too similar if you are ever inclined to research the point. Do some reading and learn:

nytimes for facts? The link you posted was an opinion piece with no citations. You sir are the ignorant one.
Would you rather have murders performed in safe conditions (like enforcement facilities with qualified staff to restrain the victim for maximum safety for the perpetrator) or in unsafe conditions (like the back alley of a city in which there might be some resistance leading to the harm of the murderer)? Murder happens even when it is illegal. Might as well try and make it as safe as possible, right? The victim can be thrown out back in the dumpster.
That is the issue. It always has been, it always will be and is why the false fight against the rights claiming a superior "morality" is and always shall be wrong.
safe, legal and rare.

A great site for post abortion stories is ForgivenMe, a Web site that helps support your post stress.

Clay will take life at all cost and the rest of us will suffer for it because we have to put up with him. Thank you Clay for endorsing life. Abortions have been around for ever folks--from ancient times. Women can get pregnant from incest, rape and abuse. Abortion should be available as an option to these women. If couples decide not to have children with incurable diseases, diagnosed prenatally, especially if they sense they will have no life long financial or physical support from the state or from their relatives to raise a completely handicapped child, then they should have the option. For those to whom this issue is black or white, many of you like Clay who will never be pregnant--you should stop the uterus wars. You don't own the uteri of the women being discussed, neither will you ever have a uterus transplant any one of you. As the proud owners of careless and callous phalli that usually lead to these unwanted babies, you should butt out and let the women manage their own reproductive organs.

There it is again!.. the "two wrongs make a right" dogma. "There are woman who do not need us "uterus-less" men trying to "own" their uterus". That sounds as if we are referring to the woman as bots with uteri boys. Lets step back here. These are actual people we are referring to. And the issue is far from "crazy right-wing religious nuts trying to own the uterus". It is ALL about CARING for both MOTHER and BABY. "Pro-killers" are all about AVOIDING the real problem by skirting the issue... which is still KILLING BABIES as we speak. Are you telling me 90% of abortions today are because of a rape case? Anyone have some stats on that?
