Pastor 'hates' Obama, prays for his death

An Arizona pastor has drawn the attention of the Secret Service after saying that he prays for the death of President Barack Obama, a Phoenix television station is reporting.

Steven Anderson, pastor of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, shared that bit of information last month in a sermon entitled “Why I hate Barack Obama.”

"If you want to know how I'd like to see Obama die, I'd like him to die of natural causes," Anderson explained to KNXV ABC 15. "I don't want him to be a martyr, we don't need another holiday. I'd like to see him die, like Ted Kennedy, of brain cancer."

One congregant said he moved to the area because he agreed with the message of the church. Christopher Broughton said he listened to Anderson’s sermon the day before bringing at AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle outside an Obama event last month in Phoenix.

I think we'd be better off if God would send [Obama] where he's going now instead of later," Broughton told KNXV. "[Obama] is destroying our country."

When asked if he was advocating violence against Obama, KNXV reports, Broughton wouldn't answer the question directly.

"I don't care how God does it, I'm not going into further detail than that," said Broughton. "It would be better now than later."

Anderson’s comments have drawn protests from a group that calls itself People Against Clergy Who Preach Hate. They have also drawn notice from the Secret Service.

"We are aware of Pastor Anderson's comments and an appropriate follow up will be conducted,” a Secret Service spokesman told KNXV.

Clay I wonder if you'd like to comment on this Baptist minister for me? Is this something Baptists condone? I don't recall Christ or the Bible mentioning to pray for anyone's death? I do seem to remember Christ saying Love your enemies?

I figured since you’ve made so many ill-informed comments on the Catholic Church you might take some time and comment on this one.

Speaking for myself I find it reprehensible that someone calling themselves Christian would do such a thing. It sounds to me like this minister needs to follow the Bible and the teaching of Christ. What do you think Clay?

ravensfan - Even the Baptist parody site at www.landoverbaptist.org isn't even close to being as outrageous as this real Baptist church. Landover really pushes the edge and they are tame by comparison.

Of course this minister needs to follow the bible and the teachings of Christ. Did you think that I would disagree with that? There are sinners in every church because we are all sinners. No sermon should encourage us to hate anyone. Thanks.

Robert it's hard to fathom someone that far on the edge. I suspect this guy will be monitored by the secret service.

There are a hell of a lot of bigots, outright racists, addicts, rapists and abusers who hide behind religion. The rascals inhabit the temples and the churches of this world that give great cover to the so called sinners, Clay, the pious one, speaks of. But this is nothing more than a numbers game. If you leave out the mortified and the not so mortified sinners, the church pews will be empty except for guys like Clay and I guess that thought would petrify the hierarchy of any church. This idiot pastor wants to attract attention. The feds should get in there and take away the non profit status of his church. Praying for the death of a president is egregious not only by pastoral standards but also from the political standpoint--the man has no business butting into politics through subversive prayers. What example is this for the children in the church and what if an extremist among the congregants of this church ( the churches in America seethe with ignoramuses and extremists who can barely read, write or think, but thump the Bible for a Jesus Mary Magdalene wouldn't recognize and Mary the mother of Jesus would get a heart attack upon recognition--this is Clay's Jesus, to whom even Saul of Tarsus-Paul of Rome, would have trouble bringing praise or worship) anyway, what if an extremist among this pastor's flock decides to take the pastor at his word, and fulfill the prayer, imagining he is merely a tool of God in so doing, what if moved by this prayer, one of the insane members of this church-- who but the insane would even be a member of a church headed by this preacher of hate-- decides to hurt the president? Therein lies the real danger of this minister's prayer and similarly also the real danger in the false pieties of Clay presented as incontrovertible truth--the latter set in motion the intolerance and the political persecution of millions--women , homosexuals and others.

Clay you don't really sound all that bothered by a Baptist minister violating the words of Christ. Worse still his example could well cause someone to act on such hate. I would have expected you to denounce and condemn what he said. My biggest fear would be someone takes his message to heart and tries to act on it. Its religious figures, and I'm using that term very loosely here, like this that give Christianity a bad reputation. Not that our own history doesn't already cast an unflattering picture on us. It’s time that we start drawing a line between condemning sin, the act, and label a person. Homosexuality is one the best examples I can think of. Most Christian faiths view it as sinful. That doesn’t give us license to hate homosexuals or deny them basic rights.

Ravensfan are you trying to help or hurt God's kingdom? I dont like any pastor saying such things. I know one thing. I am not arguing with someone on here. Thanks.

Clay - You have already demonstrated that you have neither desire to discuss things in a rational manner, nor the ability to do so. You are a prime example of why religion is evil, it produces people like you and the sick so called minister from Arizona. There is no one so blind as the person so stupid that they cannot see beyond their stupidity.

Clay I could ask the same of you. You have most certainly argued with people on here. Read the definition of argument.

You made quite a few criticism of the Catholic Church mostly based on incomplete or inaccurate information on your own part. When I suggested you to take the time to learn more you refused and continued posting. BTW the disciples argued as well. Try reading Acts chapter 15.

1 John 4: 20 If a man say, I love God, and hated his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hate not seen. (12) If we love one another God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Please stop calling this liar a man of God Pastor or Minister, God call him a liar and that what he is doing lying on God. the bible said that every idol word spoken will be brought up again in the day of judgement. hate is a very strong word.

Why, Phillip, you sound like you HATE this pastor! You're doing exactly what that pastor is doing - and surely you know better than that.

You are supposed to pray for this pastor, that he may repent and turn his hate over to God.

Don't keep up the cycle of hate! It's just evil.
