Scientology appealing to African-Americans
Undaunted by the pummeling it is taking from former members, the Church of Scientology has been stepping up efforts to reach out to African-Americans.
Details appear in an interview with veteran rapper Doug E. Fresh at essence.com.
"Scientology is not a White religion. It is not just for White people," the artist, whose birth name is Douglas E. Davis, tells Terrance Dean. "Scientology is not written with disrespect toward God. It doesn't worship something that is evil. It is scientific, mathematical, and spiritual. The Black community has to check it out and see what's there. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but you have to take a look. You may be amazed at what you get."
The largely favorable piece, which mentions the erratic behavior or Tom Cruise but says nothing of the more troubling allegations against the church, lists several African-American entertainers it says have been associated with it: Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, MC Lyte, Haywood Nelson (who played Dwayne "Hey HEY Hey" Nelson on the 1970s television show, "What 's Happening!") and Isaac Hayes.
(Which raises a question, at least in my mind: We know of entertainers who are Scientologists. Are there prominent politicians/public officials, academics/scientists/intellectuals, writers/artists or athletes who are Scientologists? That is, are the only well known people involved with Scientology actors or musicians?)
Back to outreach to the African-American community: The Essence piece details Scientology operations in Inglewood, Calif., and Harlem in New York, where the church opened a center in 2001.
"Harlem, from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and eventually Stevie Wonder and Hip Hop, has been an international cultural beacon," John Carmichael, president of the Church of Scientology of New York. "Besides residents of the neighborhood, the Church of Scientology of Harlem will also provide an especially congenial atmosphere for Scientologists in the Bronx and in Brooklyn, who already make up a large part of the Scientologists of African descent, as well as more recent arrivals from Africa and the Caribbean."

Comments
I find it very sad that any well-loved member of the African-American community should be used for the purpose of furthering the cause of Scientology.
"You shouldn't be scrubbing the floor on your hands and knees. Get yourself a n*****; that's what they're born for."

A little online research can uncover a lot more where this came from.

Scientology is just trying to NOT look racist. Just studying scientology from an independent view would find that their founder, Lron hubbard, is one of the most racist people of his time, especially against african-americans.
just google "L Ron hubbard racist quotes"

Black politicians especially, do not get into Scientology, because any close inspection of the clearly documented history of Scientology, apart from Scientology propaganda, reveals that not only was Hubbard a racist, but Hubbard's much-stated plan of world domination, followed by "clearing" the galaxy, was far fetched, if not totally insane.
To top it all off, at Scientology's highest super expensive and secret level, members learn that Christ and other prophets are "implants" meant to deceive. Scientology has a lot of "bait and switch" going on.
Lastly, Scientology's fee structure, completely disenfranchises people in lower economic classes from being "enlightened" by their bogus "tech." The one alternative is become an employee at sub-minimum wage, in essence an indentured servant, subject to the violent whims and beatings given by their current leader, David Miscavige.

Interesting that after all this time, people are still falling for the same nonsense spouted by scientology. A group who has yet to prove ANY of it's claims. If scientology involves science, where's the research? Why isn't available fort all to see? Where are the third party studies which have repeated the experiments Hubbard must have conducted (if it IS a science) and demonstrated the results?
As for Hubbard being racist, you can listen to more of his bigoted drivel in streaming audio here:
http://www.xenu.net/archive/multimedia.html
If scientology isn't against God, why did Hubbard state that there was No Christ in one of his scientology lectures?

It is not worth correcting some of the nonsense, and quotes taken out of context, that have been sent in, so I won’t. There are Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish, Baptist and Muslim Scientologists, just to name a few. They come in all shapes, sizes, color and ages. All are welcome and able to do what is best for themselves and others. It is all about improving yourself, and a lot of that is spiritual. Decide for yourself…..don’t just listen to naysayers!

i knew about doug e fresh being a scilon, but mc lyte?? what a disappointment... i guess with all the information on the web i don't have to tell all of you about xenu etc., but you may want to search the web for racist remarks by lrh. famous example was one letter to his first(?) wife.
Posted by: Thomas | September 8, 2009 9:33 AM
@Steve: you don't seem to have studied LRH's lectures very carefully or you haven't advanced much on the bridge. if you would, you would know that the world religions are false engrams put into thetans by xenu through 3D-brainwashing 75000000 years ago. So, scientology is in no way compatible with any other religion.

Hubbard was quick to inform his followers that black people did not have the capacity to learn Scientology and should only serve white people. That's no bar from taking their money I guess. Of course, that anyone is pretending that this Cult is a good thing for anyone is insane. This "Church" is really a cult, and it's run with the violence of Goodfellows-- check out the recent St. Petersburg Times articles "Truth Rundown".
Posted by: ERIC D | September 8, 2009 10:05 AM
C'mon, Hubbard only said all that stuff about black folk WHEN THEY DIDN'T HAVE ANY MONEY!
"...in his native habitat the Zulu is only outside the bars of a madhouse because there are no madhouses provided by his tribe." L Ron Hubbard
It's a fraud, scam, bait and switch, been going on for 50years behind the curtain of religion.

Doesn't matter what color your skin is as long as you pay. Once you run out, well, you'll be a slave just like the whites in there, working for no pay in the "sea org". I suppose one might say indentured servitude is more of the way it works, but it is still a violation of the 13th amendment of the US constitution as well as the laws of any civilized country.
Look up Jesse Prince. He reached the top, saw lots of beatings and was forced to suffer racist remarks and jokes from David Miscavige. Some of his story is found here http://www.solitarytrees.net/racism/prince.htm
Posted by: AnonymousX | September 8, 2009 7:20 PM
@steve What you're really saying is that you can't challenge or disprove anything that has been said, so instead you're just going to use logical fallacy to try distract from the point.
How can Hubbard stating that there was no Christ and that religions are implants from a galactic overlord named Xenu, possibly be taken out of context?
How can his attacks on black people the world over, the Chinese, Indians and Muslims be "out of context"?

The spiritual importance of Jesus Christ was clearly acknowldged by L Ron Hubbard in his lecture "Hope of Man" that is on CD.
In that lecture, Hubbard reviews 11,000 years of spiritual enlightenment and how the core message (man is an immortal spiritual being, the body only a vessel) passed from spiritual leader to spiritual leader.
Starting in the 1850s materialism arose, reducing spiritual awareness and eventually impacting all major religions. The change was instigated by the German militarist, Bismarck, who linked with the psychologist Wundt to pervert psychology (psych=spirit / ology=study of) to "man as an evolved response-stimulus animal" to make it easier to push his German expansionist vision.
The perversion of psychology opened the door to "man as a sack of chemicals monitored by 2.5 pounds of brain matter" that is the basis of the immense profits pocketed by the psych/drug companies with their "chemical imbalance."
It is documented (google it) how the African- Amerian communities were targetted to reduce their social unrest (justified) by flooding the Black communities with easy to access hard drugs. This in the 1950's. Now a disproportion number of African-Americans are on psych "happy pills" particularly school children.
Fortunately, the Harlem and similar Scientology community centers will provide workable methods to resolve social issues. Association for Better Living and Education spearheads L Ron Hubbard's solutions.

Did they tell the African Americans that their God Ron was a racist, a bigot and a Jesus hater?
That the Cult of $cientology's policy letters written by their GOD claimed that the white race came from outer space brought here by Xenu and that the blacks were sub-humans who they inter-bred with?
If they did not, then know it now.

"Hubbard was a man of his time" is the context Scientologists usually give for Hubbard's racism against blacks. Well, his time was also that of Rosa Parks and Martin Luthor King. It wasn't enough for him to ignore the racial problems, or even side delicately with the racists. He had to go over the top and have new insights into the inferiority of black people. He never repented or apologized. Follow the links left by other contributors. They show a person that would have made Bull Conner look like a moderate.
When you are finished with that, explore his racism against Asians.
To this day, Scientologists refer to non-scientologists as WOG's which was a word used by the British many years ago to diminish the people in the countries they had colonized.

Scientology is a cult. If it's a religion of anything, it's the religion of the almighty dollar.
"Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."- L. Ron Hubbard

^ So much for Scientology raising people's IQ like they claim, eh?
Anyway, it's funny how Doug E Fresh was desperate for a loan of $4 million to keep his homes out of foreclosure a few months ago, and now he suddenly loud and proud in his shilling of Scientology.
I smell a conditional loan from the sleazy cult of Scientology.

As an African American, I must say that it is to the individual in what they choose to practice as a religion. I see a lot of comments from people or group who state that this is something negative. But if prominent, out spoken African Americans choose to become Scientologist, then so let them be. African Americans such as Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, MC Lyte, Haywood Nelson and Isaac Hayes are well known within African American Communities. To learn of their religious practices is not at all a shocker with my community.
Quite honestly, religion as a whole within African Americans house holds are very, very diverse. You will find many who practice Christianity, but many are Methodist, Baptist, you will find Islamic, Islamic Five Percenters, as well people who practice even Voodoo, and a combination of African Deities and Catholic religion. When it comes to African and Religion, the history and diversity runs deep.
Scientology is not as far fetch as one may think. From a race that was robbed of its culture, spiritual practices, and even family, it must be notated that spiritual practices within African Americans are far more complex then one person could imagine.

Hey Baltimore Sun it seems that your message board has been spammed. It's hard for anyone to even comment on this post.
In regards to religion and African Americans, we are very spiritual people. Our religions are very diverse from Islam to Rastafarianism. The commentators on this site must not be African American because their comments are way off the charts.
Majority of us knew that Doug is Scientologist. This is not news t

"The Black community has to check it out and see what's there."
WTF. The above statement represents the high sophistry. Hubbard himself -- who is considered their God-- viewed African Amercians as "house negros" who were unfit for scientology, but should be personal house slaves.
Also, as just reported by the St. Petersburg Times series "The Truth Rundown" (check google) the COS is a violent cult that is run like Goodfellows, with regular beatings of staff members by the leader, David Miscavige. This is bad for backs and whites and everyone else one who care about basic human freedom and human rights.
Thanks for trying to help everyone out Mr. Fresh with your pro cult publicity. You are clearly a prince amoung men.

James Lightfield frightens me a bit- he seems very eager to accept any consipiracy theory (from hard drugs to african americans), even to someone taking his name.
But, he embodies the scientologist. Just can't admit that it's a possibility that hubbard or the organization itself can have a flaw.
No matter the evidence, he can believe only what hubbard (or now DM) says.
scary thought.

"It is not worth correcting some of the nonsense, and quotes taken out of context, that have been sent in, so I won’t. There are Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish, Baptist and Muslim Scientologists, just to name a few."
Actually, I don't think Hubbard's "get yourself a house negro" style comments can be taken out of context. Also, you really can't have a Scientologist who is a christian or any other religion assuming you don't want to live a lie.
I used to be a scientologist, before I woke up. After you reach the state of "clear' LRH's extremely expensive dogma teaches that all religions other than scientology are false. Hubbard instructs that they are "holographic" protections instilled by Xenu, the galactic ruler.
So I ask, what level on the bridge are you, poor soul.
