Marylander finalist to be L.A. bishop suffragan

The Rev. Canon Mary D. Glasspool, canon to the bishops of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, is one of six finalists to become bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, according to a release on the diocesan Web site. The Los Angeles diocese will choose two finalists to serve together as bishops suffragan in an election in December.

“I have often said that this is one of the finest diocesan staffs in the Episcopal Church,” the Right Rev. Eugene Taylor Sutton, Episcopal bishop of Maryland, said in a statement. “When one of its members is called to other important positions in the church, then all of us are honored. Mary Glasspool is an important and long-serving leader in the Diocese of Maryland. Her work here has prepared her for even greater responsibilities. Our prayers are with Mary through this election, and with the Diocese of Los Angeles as it discerns God’s will.”

As canon to the bishops, Glasspool’s work includes Sunday visitations with parishes, congregational development and pastoral and mission strategy planning. As bishop suffragan in Los Angeles, she would help the bishop diocesan oversee the ministries and administration of the diocese.

Ordained in 1981, Glasspool served in parishes in Philadelphia and Boston and at St. Margaret’s in Annapolis before becoming canon to the bishops in 2001, according to the release. She has served on the diocese’s Standing Committee, the board of Episcopal Community Services of Maryland, and has been elected four times to head the deputation to General Convention four times.

And she is a practicing lesbian.

The greater Anglican Communion asked for a moratorium on more homosexual bishops and blessing of same sex unions. Archbishop Rowan Williams personally came to California to plea that the Episcopal Denomination not to violate these moratoria. But at General Convention, two resolutions were passed to proceed anyway. Now, Katherine Jefferts Schori wrote a letter that these resolutions didn't violate the moratoria. Oh really? The ink wasn't even dried, we have three homosexual candidates amongst three bishop positions.

Ms Schori's double speak would put Bill Clinton to shame. Is this how a Christian leader should behave? We have the words of Jesus, "Let your 'yes' be yes, and your 'no' be no. Anything else is of the evil one."

Why do Christians allow themselves to look more and more like the world around them? Christian rock music looking like the typical hard rock concert if you dont hear the words, etc? Sin. When entire congregations look the other way it bogs my mind. Why would anyone attend or support such a church if they are true Christians? The only true Christians at those churches are the ones who are complaining. Why would a true Christian vote for Barbara Mikulski? Well, they will say, she has done so much for the poor and the disadvanted people and Baltimore, etc., that her record cant be overlooked. If everyone attended church and tithed their money to the church, the churches would have more than enough money to care for the poor and disadvantaged. Thats what the original idea was anyway. Then you wouldnt have people complaining when the government tries to step in. Its a shame. The Episcopal church wont get any of my money. Thanks.

To a certain degree the character, faithfulness and indeed maturity of the church can be measured by the character, faithfulness and maturity of the leadership it raises up. In this time of sad division and vituperative rancor in our culture, which too often is brought into and nourished in the church, it gives me great comfort and hope for the future of the Episcopal Church that someone as well qualified as Rev. Glasspool is being considered for bishop suffragan of the Diocese of LA. Intelligence, compassion, spiritual depth, committed faith, depth of knowledge, a huge skill set in both administration and pastoral care, humility, leadership, wit, and passion; these are all qualities and gifts that Rev. Glasspool has placed in service to Christ and the Episcopal Church literally all of her life (She’s a PK)! I can only contemplate with awe the choice to be made in LA if the other two candidates are as well qualified and gifted as is the Rev. Glasspool.

Gen. 19:5—8; Ex. 22:19; Lev. 18:22, 23; 20:13, 15, 16; Deut. 23:17; 27:21; Judg. 19:22; 1 Kin. 14:24; 15:12; 22:46; 2 Kin. 23:7; Rom. 1:24, 26, 27; 1 Cor. 6:9; 1 Tim. 1:9, 10.
I dont see anywhere where homosexuality is an acceptable thing.
God is a loving God, He is also a just God. If you cant marry according to Gods standards, try celibacy, because there is no third option according to the Bible.
Is is sad to see the Bible changed to fit peoples lifestyle. Ill be praying for change in the Episcopal church.
