Lessons from Egypt
The revolt in Egypt this week has produced powerful scenes of tens of thousands of people demonstrating peacefully for the overthrow of a government. Lawyers, merchants and the poor have rubbed shoulders in Tahrir Square, all callling for a change of regime. In Jordon and Palestine leaders seem to be running scared and looking to institute reforms to stave off similar protests. The scenes are reminiscent of what occurred 20 some years ago in Eastern Europe as non-violent demonstrations brought the Berlin wall down. Reading today's paper, I wondered if social studies teachers have taken the opportunity to stop for a second and teach the history lessons from Egypt.
