Frustration over lack of school board accountability
There's a Facebook page for everything these days, and that includes one for those who want to vent frustration at the school board and hash out the pros and cons of a hybrid school board in Baltimore County. The Facebook page says: "Meeting after meeting, it has become apparent that our teachers, our PTA's, our parents, our students and even our legislators have no influence on policy and decisions made by Baltimore County Public Schools."
In an email today, Laurie Taylor-Mitchell, a parent and frequent critic of the system, is encouraging anyone who has an opinion on the subject to post their comments on the page. The Facebook Page is called Citizens for An Accountable Baltimore County School Board!

Perhaps it will make a difference...nothing else seems to have moved the superintendent and his board to do what is right.

@ BS Paper article: Frustration over lack of school board accountability
Perhaps consider expanding for
Inside Ed blog discussion to include a bilateral conversation aimed at BCPSS lack of school board accountability to its district citizens, stakeholders, and parent/gardians.

At a time where dollars are tight I find it surprising that at least one member of the Baltimore County School Board will be traveling to San Francisco on the tax payer’s dollar. Mr. Bowler is even advertising it on the NSBA conference web site. Here he is in his own words.
There's travel and then there's travel. I'm on the board of one of the nation's largest school districts (Baltimore County, Md). I'm just back from the MD boards of ed annual meeting, held at a resort hotel in Ocean City. I learned a hell of a lot and never got to the beach. I think this was true of most other attendees. Meanwhile, I "travel" maybe three days a week, visiting schools, attending hearings (the board is a judicial body as well as a policy-making one), back-to-school nights, twice-a-month official meetings 19 miles from my house. We get a nice buffet dinner served by a catering firm that has a contract with the district. We are often abused unfairly during the public-speaking part of meetings (and can't talk to the speakers). The board and teachers' union are on a collision course in contract negotiations. My pay is $100 a year before taxes, plus travel at the federal rate. The district budget is $1.3 billion. The NSBA meeting is in San Francisco next spring. I will attend without guilt. --Mike Bowler, Board Member, Baltimore County Public Schools, MD
One can almost feel sad for Mr. Bowler having to listen to the public he serves.
I wonder how many more from the state and the cash strapped Baltimore School Districts will be in attendance? Dr. Hariston? Dr. Alonso? Sun reporters can you find out for the public?
