Hairston interview with the Patch
In a recent interview with the The Patch, Joe Hairston is described as saying that he sees the controversy over AIM "as an unwanted distraction that has been eliciting strong feelings that he equated to people's hatred to 'Hitler.'" The superintendent says he believes that the focus should shift to education and away from AIM.

Really, Joe? Hitler? You continually exhibit an increasingly bizarre egocentric mindset. You refused to answer basic questions about business dealings, cronyism and ethical concerns to officials to whom you are responsible, and then tried to hide behind a cowardly racial smokescreen. Now you mix professional educators' sensible rejection of a scientifically invalid tool to the repulsion we feel toward Hitler?? Really?? Just where is your thinking coming from? Educators saw the foolishness of AIM and spoke out against it. In recent years, professionals in the county have been disrespected and even worse when voicing a professional difference of opinion with your administration. In my mind, it was a professional assessment, nothing personal. It relates in no way with the outrage I feel toward Hitler's reign of carnage. Those who were his victims should be appalled at your comments. The correlation with Hitler highlights a dysfunctional, even disturbed, mentality.

Joe Hairston is probably the best I have seen at distraction, deflection, and distribution of misinformation to benefit his own agenda. The controversy over AIM extends so far beyond accountability. Interestingly enough AIM asks teachers to input marks for students with NO accountability for connection to data and evaluative measures. SImply the input of an A, I, or M lies with one teacher at one point in time...It gives NO accurate or helpful information about the progress of our students or yields any positive data linked to teacher accountability. The money invested in one woman's folly is certainly of great concern in a time when financial concerns loom large over the county. If the superintendent really wanted to turn the focus back to student achievement, he would let AIM go, let Barbara Dezmon retire, and remove those who continue to work on her behalf within the county. I hope the citizens of Baltimore County and the legislators do not stop asking questions simply because Joe Hairston has used a startling and quite frankly ugly defense to keep from the real issues--the way Joe Hairston and his friends do business in the county. If he wants the subject changed, he should change his outrageous behavior!

The unspoken aspect of all this is the impact in the schools. The dictatorial method of managing is trickling down, creating a toxic environment. Teacher Interns are being warned off. Creativity is being stifled and there is no longer freedom to speak one's mind about educational issues. There is one agenda being directed from Greenwood. So maybe Dr. Hairston is on to something, Americans do hate dictators.

The comments made in the Sun which included the reference to "lynching" and the interview on WJZ in which Joe Hairston made accusations of racism were stunning and quite offensive to those merely seeking accountability for the expenditure of resources paid for by the taxpayers of Baltimore County. Now, a comparison of the reasonable objections regarding AIM and the very reasonable questions of accountabilty for resources used to fund development of software for an employee's personal company is compared to the Hitler. I must ask what is going on in Baltimore County and why is the board of education allowing the superintendent to offend the stakeholders he has been appointed to serve? If the board does not take action, I really don't know why there is a board. They seem only to serve the superintendent and I am confused as to why they refuse to take action on behalf of the families in Baltimore County. We deserve better.
