Race to the Top application available

Maryland has just posted its Race to the Top application on its website. Here's the link. I have just started reading, but the emphasis seems to be on steps the state will take to close the achievement gap.  The application says Maryland will rewrite its standards, curriculum and assessments to adhere to the new national standards, that it will try to turnaround more low performing schools through a turnaround center it has been setting up, and better train and prepare its teachers. The application also says it will strengthen teacher evaluation systems (as it has to under a bill passed last night) and create a powerful new data tracking system.

So please post your comments here after you have had time to read the report. My sources say to skim section A and give a close read to sections D and E.

More on this subject later.

I think that this can work but it depends on who will implement the standards that have to be followed. Public Schools need to get better but if there are so many roadblocks it will never happen. When changes are being implemented you need to include everyone and not only selected people because sometimes those selected people are the ones that say what the upper administration want them to say instead of what the real picture is.

A regular person won’t read this massive document, I certainly didn’t.
However, I Section A-1 reads more like an overview of a business plan,
and includes the past, the present, and the future of public education
in our state. It outlines what’s needed to remain at the top of the
education ladder. I think Maryland is right to go after any pot of
money that can help our schools and I honestly can’t see why anyone
would oppose this except teacher unions that seem more focused on
saving their jobs/benefits rather than on what’s best for children.

Let's not forget that the first job of a union is to advocate the best deal possiable for it's members! Secondly, many of the reforms and work condition requirments that those evil teacher unions have demanded beinfit the children in care of teachers who are members of those unions.

I am afriad that teachers and teachers unions are about to be set up once again to be the problem with education in America.

And by the way should we dumb down our education plans so that people will take the time to be engaged in education?
