Harford Delegate Wants All LGBT Sites Blocked In Schools
I stumbled across this article the other day and wanted to get your thoughts.
Apparently, Harford Del. Rick Impallaria wrote a letter to the Harford County school superintendent and board of education members stating he does not approve of the decision to unblock LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Web sites for any reason.
"I am shocked to read that someone has decided to allow 'alternative sexual lifestyle' Web sites to be unblocked, giving County public school students access to them," he wrote in the letter.
The sites were unblocked after the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland made the request on behalf of teachers and students.
Some of the web sites that had been blocked include: Equality Maryland; Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, or PFLAG; the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN; Human Rights Campaign, or HRC; the Interfaith Working Group; Dignity USA; and Jewish Mosaic.
"Our schools should be putting their emphasis on teaching our children the three R's and preparing them to earn a living, which is the basis for a successful life," Impallaria wrote. "All these other issues should be dealt with by the parents, on their own time and on their own dime."

Applying Del. Impallaria's logic, I would expect to see access blocked to all sites dealing with religion, politics, health, families, and anything else not directly related to "readin', ritin', and 'rithmetic."
Otherwise, Del. Impallaria needs to understand that his kids are way more informed than he is. Perhaps if he spent some time actually looking at the sites he would ban, rather than applying knee-jerk reaction, he just might acquire some education himself.
The unblocked sites listed are hardly "inappropriate," except maybe to the walled-off little mind of this legislator.

Thank you Delegate Impallaria for having the courage to say something. I hope it works. Allowing young minds to be influenced in that manner is horrifying. I guess next they'll want the kids to have access to the new video game that shows you how to rape people. Not everyone wants those behaviors rammed down our kids throats.

Speaking as the delegate's daughter, yes I am a well informed young lady and my brothers and sisters are as well. Before casting opinions I believe it is necessary to find out both sides of the story so I will quickly point out a few things:
First of all my father is an advocate for his district, and after receiving letters from his constituents he spoke up for the people he represents, I would hardly call that a knee jerk reaction.
Second, I don't know about you but I am a parent and I think all issues dealing with sexual intercourse and sexuality should be approved by the parent first, perhaps a permission slip as we commonly find in sex education classes. These types of topic should be discussed in the home or in the guidance office.
My fathers comments were not anti gay, they were in support of parental rights to discuss sexuality in the home.

This guy is just posturing. He just wants to get noticed. He's like those whiny guys at the Hippo who just get louder and louder until you look their way. Then as soon as you do they give you that "I'm too good for you" look.
They can go ahead and ban the HRC as far as I'm concerned. Joe Solmonese and his ilk have made themselves irrelevant.
When he says, "Our schools should be putting their emphasis on teaching our children the three R's and preparing them to earn a living,..." he makes it clear that he thinks children are worth nothing more than their use-value to the State and the corporations. Where I went to school we were taught that such thoughts were fascist.
No. We should be preparing our children to enjoy the fullness of life. For most of us that includes having a loving partnership. For all of us it means enjoying good mental health and self esteem. Not only would he deprive us of that but he would also deprive us of music and art. Even what was called in my day "civics" is excluded from his draconian three R's.

I agree 100% with BankStreet; took the words right out of my mouth. This guy sounds like a complete tool. Let's hope his children are more well informed and have a better sense of judgment than he does.

I can't believe we still have to deal with this nonsense. What an ignorant hack.

We are very grateful to be living in Harford County for many reasons. Now we have another reason: an enlightened school board. We're delighted that our grandson will be attending a school system which does not limit his opportunities for learning about this glorious world we live in.

The Equality Maryland website describes "sexual intercourse" as much as the Johnson and Johnson website describes menstruation.
People, these are not porn sites; howver, they are political-activism sites -- perhaps this what Del. Impallaria finds offensive. In that case, honesty would suggest he say so -- and also admit that he seeks to throttle equal access to political information.
As to the cop-out that he is only reflecting the wishes of his constituents, Del. Impallaria should remind them (and perhaps himself) that our nation is a Republic (and not a Democracy). He has an obligation to inform and elevate his constituents and vote for the greater good of his community.

Delegate Impallaria and others keep trying to gloss over that students and teachers requested the unblocking of pro-LGBT sites, because the block was interfering with education and school clubs. Hypocritically, sites derogatory to gays and lesbians were still allowed through the filter. When the request was denied, students asked for help with their request, and it was finally granted with that help.
When I attended and graduated high school in Harford County, student Gay Straight Alliances didn't exist as far as I knew, but we sure could have used them. It might have saved me and several of my friends a lot of anguish and torment. I'm happy to hear that the school system has finally allowed students access to all points of view, and hope that they will approach the road ahead with the same openness. The posturing of someone trying to build walls will never advance the conversation or the future.

Then also block all religious websites, block all heterosexual websites. Block Catholic priests from access to Viagra. Swallow all the bitter pills Impallaria, Bankstreet and Impallaria's daughter...sounds like you'd welcome Totalitarianism.

It is clear that this is just one more attempt to enforce homophoibia. Allowing the sites mentioned above is not "ramming" anything downs anyone's throat. There is something called free will. As for Ms.Carolyn's view of these sites showing or teaching LGBT sexuaality. I suggest she actully see the sites. These are sites aimed at gving information about the issues that affect gays. NOT sex sites. It'ls a shame most don't take the time to learn, before they leap.
