Maryland schoolchildren can contribute to Haiti fund

The Maryland State Department of Education is providing the structure to allow schoolchildren a means to channel their concern over the earthquake victims in Haiti into fundraising for the devastated region. After Hurricane Katrina, the state's schoolchildren raised $1.3 million.

Today, the department announced that it would set up a fund that school systems can contribute to until Feb. 12.  For more information go to the website...www.MarylandPublicSchools.org.

Are teachers out there trying to include something about Haiti in their lesson plans to help children deal with the many sad pictures they are seeing?

I teach fourth grade in Baltimore County Public Schools. On Friday I took part of a social studies period to talk with my students about the Haiti quake. They seemed to be well-informed about the details. My focus was the reason for so many deaths and injuries compared to the major quakes that hit California in the last part of the 20th Century. We'd already studied earthquakes, so the children had some understanding of the natural forces involved. There was a lot of meaningful discussion, and I think it was a springboard for more lessons/discussions next week. I encouraged students to talk with their families over the long weekend because their questions passed into territory that I'm not at liberty to address in a public school classroom. This is one of those times where I can present facts and inspire children to think, but parents need to jump in to add a more spiritual or religious slant. It's my plan to continue our discussion next week. Maybe the talk will translate to some meaningful social justice action.

Poly's Student Government Association led Poly's students, faculty and parents to donate $600 in one day on Friday. The donation was sent to Doctors Without Borders this morning.

The students of Baltimore Poly raised over $700 during a spur of the moment drive Friday morning.

Immensely proud of them.

Baltimore City College raised $1,400 in 2 days for Doctors Without Borders work in Haiti, hoping to raise $2000 by Friday.

Keep up the good work City and Poly!
