Last day of school profiles
With the last day of school in Baltimore City and Baltimore County rapidly approaching, we’re looking for some interesting stories to tell about students as they look to the summer. Do you know of any kids who have a great summer planned and are just itching for school to be over – maybe a student who’s going to space camp, or Europe with their parents? Or maybe a child who’s taking the class pet home for the summer? Or a middle-schooler who is nervous about going to high school next year? If you know of any students whom we could profile, please send an e-mail to jennifer.badie@baltsun.com or liz.bowie@baltsun.com by Wednesday or post a comment on the blog.
UPDATE: Thanks to all the teachers, principals and parents who helped us find subjects to profile on the last day of school in Baltimore City and Baltimore County last week. You can read the profiles here.

Europe? Space Camp? Let's be realistic! City streets? BCPSS summer learning programs? Work? Hot houses? Few pools! Curfews for good reasons. Welcome to the summer in the city for most of our kids!!!!!

Thanks WE for being the first to post here. I thought the post was dripping with naivete about what our kids really do during the summer.
Ms. Badie-Im glad you are on board on the education beat here, but please do a little homework about the summer realities for many of our students before you post something that is going to sound rather insulting to the majority of kids here.

Let's be fair. Two of the four possibilities could be applied to students in any school district. As for the other 2? It's possible that students in some of our private schools or in some of the more affluent areas of Baltimore County could be doing something so exciting. BCPSS isn't the only district being covered on this blog. Some readers may get tired of hearing about our ups and downs. It would be nice to hear some voices from other public and private schools.

Avalon, Sorry! You are right! It's just that the reality at my school is grim. Summer Learning at the same old school is the best most of my kids have. The Orioles promised buses for a game and a tour of Camden and bailed out. Too expensive. Enoch Pratt promised buses and programs but only in the afternoon. We're done at noon! Hello!! Why make promises? Trying to help a few older kids get real jobs without much luck. I was responding to that. I forgot this is not Saraa City beat anymore. Anyway.....have a good summer everyone.

We have some kids who'll be employed through YouthWorks, others doing paid internships through LawLinks http://www.clrep.org/pdf/BC_Law_Links_Application.pdf.
One of our rising seniors will have the privilege of going to Israel for a month through Elijah Cummings' Youth Program, http://www.ecyp.org/
Not bad for Baltimore City Public School folk! Still, the vast majority will just be hanging out.

My 15 y/o daughter has been constantly looking for a summer job with no luck.
With that avenue constantly hitting a dead-end, I enrolled her into PSAT/SAT review classes at CCBC. It's a shame that she has to travel far to take these courses, but BCCC does not offer them.
For her entering the 11th grade this fall, it's time to start now to get the training on how to approach the test.

When do we get to see the profiles of the kids? I emailed Liz with a suggestion, but I'd be just as happy to read about some students I don't know (whether their summer has some wonderfully exciting experience or a bit of struggle...)

Hi, they ran in Saturday's paper. -- Jen
