Baltimore schools chef Geraci on Diane Rehm
Baltimore schools nutrition director Tony Geraci was on The Diane Rehm Show this morning as part of a panel on sustainable food and Michelle Obama's vegetable garden. He talked about the city schools' 33-acre organic farm, where schools can have their own gardens, as well as plans for "farm to fork" vocational programs and three kid-run cafes. He said more than 1,000 Maryland farmers responded to an RFP to serve locally grown produce in city schools, and the city is trying to identify plots of land for urban agriculture projects. Got out of class early today (sorry, teachers, I know that's obnoxious) and was able to listen to the replay. So great! What a great communication to the nation of the good things happening in Baltimore City Public Schools.

What is the realistic time line for rolling out these great ideas?
I ask because I walk into our cafeteria and still see terrible fried frozen food. Are they still fazing out that crap we used to buy from New Jersey or something?

This is SUCH a great idea. Good food would go so far into making school a much more inviting place for students.
Mystery meat has been around forever, it certainly was in my school system, but we need to grow and keeping it local, fresh and healthy is remarkable.

The boxed breakfasts are a HUGE hit. And much healthier than the garbage they still serve our children at lunch.
From the an article I read somewhere in the last year on Geraci (The Sun? The Urbanite? I cannot remember exactly), I think he's in the process of ending existing food contracts for lunch.

Ditto to Corey. Quote: "What is the realistic time line for rolling out these great ideas?"
Our BCPSS Elementary School cafeteria is still serving Corn Dogs for breakfast. WHY???

I&E:
I'd ask your principal why. I'm pretty sure every school has access to the boxed breakfasts.
