Baltimore schools have 2nd stabbing in 2 days
A boy from Baltimore Talent Development High was stabbed in the left shoulder outside the school this morning. He was alert and talking as he was taken to the hospital. Two boys from Augusta Fells Savage, located in the same Harlem Park complex as Talent Development, are in custody.
This comes after yesterday's stabbing at Carver. The student there who was stabbed in the side after classes let out yesterday was in good condition at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

I hope these two students will fully heal and that these attacks will find an ending without further violence.

I fervently hope that these incidents are accidental outgrowths of interpersonal activities. Unfortunately, there has been a rapid rise in the violent incidents in schools lately. Just an outgrowth of not reacting to minor infractions on a consistent and rapid pace. Let's counsel them and see what happens. Well, here is what happens.

This is sad. What makes it worse is one of two things will happen. Either these students who are responsible will either be back in their schools in less than 45 days, or transferred to other schools. Thats what seems to happen all the time.

Veteran Teacher: I have to whole-heartedly disagree with you that the school stabbings are a merely a result of "not reacting to minor infractions on a consistent basis." Your statement implies that school violence is a result of schools not suspending students. In order to stab an individual, one must lack a great deal of respect for life. The ability to commit violent acts starts with the lack of guidance at home. School and suspension can NEVER replace parental responsibility. The issue of school violence is a community issue. Schools are just a microcasm of society. We as a community must address our children as soon as they leave the womb. Suspension is not the panacea for what ails our schools across the country. Good old fashion parenting is what is needed.

Nic, you are so right! However, we must begin even earlier. Sex education, birth control, prenatal counseling and prenatal health care are all crucial. So often I attend meetings about students, IEP's etc and reference is made to the lifelong results of drugs, alcohol, lead, poor nutrition etc. We must get to our girls very early and convince them to take control of their lives. Ditto for the boys but I do believe that strong, educated young women could change the dismal future babies face. The brightest girl in our fifth grade a few years ago had a baby in eigth grade. She has been on a steady decline ever since. Of course, the father has long since disappeared and the baby is no longer a cute baby. She is a demanding toddler with an impatient and unhappy teen mother.Sure, she may be the one in a very few who prospers but what about all the others. Fast forward to school. Now the teachers are suddenly responsible to supply all that families are not! Incedible,I say. I think society is actually thinking about the responsibility issue as we read about the mother of 14 babies. Hmmmm.....
