A suggestion for Michael Phelps to repair his image
The Baltimore Brew suggests that Phelps donate money to repair the pool at Baltimore City College. It would be a win-win: City, short on cash, capitalizes on the swimmer's deep pockets. Phelps, in need of some positive press after the infamous bong photo surfaced, capitalizes on the school's good name.

Mike does not need for us to approve of his actions an with the windfall he already has could tell us to take a hike. We hold people to unbelievable high standards and then beat them up for something as harmless as this. Another victim of the sensless War On Drugs.

What if he decides to turn City's pool into the worlds largest BONG?

1) is Phelps' image really damaged?
2) couldn't we endlessly propose worthy causes for him (or any wealthy person) to give money to? what ever distinguishes one from the other?

Phelps blew it big time this time. He is an international sports sensation and needs to learn he is still a person and needs to refrain from illegal activity. His mom is a middle school principal. How are her students supposed to learn marijuana is bad when the most famous athlete in the world smokes it and gets away with it? I think he needs to come down off his pedestal and settle up with the sheriff in South Carolina.

@ Joe
Didn't the picture actually pre-date Phelps' fame? I'm not sure on that, but that was the impression the last story I read about this was... which was a while ago. This is gossip column crap. World Medalist, yes.. American champion, yes... young 20 something *kid*... yes. Don't forget about his underage DUI a little bit back. He's a kid, and he's gonna be a kid despite what the media pumped you up to think of him

Before we suggest prosecution of Phelps, I'd have to wonder how many times that sheriff pursued a CDS case against someone merely on the basis of a picture of a person smoking some pot at a party (granted, now there's a confession...). If not normal, this would be prosecution because of his fame, not a lack of prosecution on the basis of his fame.
Right on, Brandon, the guy is 23 and has spent a large percentage of his life in a pool. Work hard, play hard. Doesn't excuse it, but if this is the worst this guy's getting into then I think it'll be alright.

Didn't he get PBJ for the DUI? Wonder if this violates the terms of his probation.

For heaven's sake folks how about repairing his image by working on the 80 year old pool He Just Bought! There's plenty to fix in the facility he already trains at. That pool is just as much a part of Baltimore City and would sincerely benefit from repairs and updating.
Come on! Where is all of that foundation money going to anyway!
Spend local mr owner.

What in the world was Phelps thinking if he was thinking at all? I'm tired of people making excuses for him. Yes, he's young. Yes, he's going to make mistakes. Yes, he should get break. If this was his first dumb screw up, he gets a pass. But, it isn't and just like before, he admits to messing up and says it won't happen again. But, it did. Now, one sponsor has dropped him and there likely will be more even if they say they still stand behind him. Son, you have two strikes against you and you may get lucky and weather this one, too. But, unless you get your head screwed on straight, grow up, and start to understand that the world is paying attention to your every move, you're bound to do something stupid again and next time nobody will be forgiving. You have disappointed many and should be ashamed of yourself.

Everyone, take a deep breath (bong optional). Money makes the world go around, but bad press can tilt the axis. I have no problem with Mr. Gold Medal, but he should be more careful in the future...

Bravo to Kellogg Co. “THEY’RE GR-R-REAT!” in my eyes.

Take it easy there Tiger. Look at the labels on all those Kellogg's products, then take a look at the science, and then ask yourself this: Which is worse for your body? A toke on a bong or a box of Pop- Tarts?

Anyone who wants to pass judgment on the guy is welcome to, but before you get all high and mighty and try to crack down on this one (only in trouble because he's famous) kid... look around your Baltimore neighborhood schools. Help crack down on the drug dealing, abusing, and using going down in your very schools and neighborhoods. How many of you have walked past a “junkie” passed out at a mailbox or turned away from an obvious deal as you drove down North ave? Get proactive with the source of the problem, instead of reacting to a photo of a person who (again, despite being labeled an American hero) probably doesn't give to shakes what you think of him.
