Timothy Oxendine pleads not guilty

The 14-year-old former Lemmel student pleaded not guilty today in the fatal stabbing of classmate Markel Williams, 15.

Timothy's lawyer does not appear to be claiming that his client did not commit the crime. Instead, he's making the case that there were extenuating circumstances and Timothy was afraid of Markel and afraid to come to school. He said he's trying to get the case moved to juvenile court, where the punishment would likely be much less severe.

It has always been one of the more depressing things about American justice - the need to claim "not guilty" when in fact one IS guilty. It sends such a bad message - isn't there another way of doing things? I know, I know, it's the worst system except all of the others. I just mean that when everyone knows person Z did something how does it look for them to say they didn't. How about a new plea of "guilty with extenuating circumstances"?
