Inappropriate relationships in Howard schools

Over in Howard County, a 61-year-old high school band director was arrested today and charged with sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl over two years. For all the problems in city schools, these teacher/student relationship scandals seem to surface far more often in the suburbs. Three teachers in Howard were arrested in the 2006-2007 school year for inappropriate relationships with students. I don't remember the last time a case like that was brought to light in Baltimore. I'm not saying there haven't been any, but if there have in recent years, they've been kept quiet.

City students attack first,
City students fight back,
City middle and high students are so old that student/teacher relationships are not a crime.

I have taught in four different school systems in my career and, quite frankly, I have never been attracted to a student in an inappropriate way. The teachers who I knew that became attracted to students were usually younger and had been in defective relationships with people their own age. I do however believe that most city students are not interested in their teachers--they have much more interest in money and such which pretty much lets teachers out the door.

Back in 2002, maybe in 2003, a well-regarded veteran teacher at our city school was accused by a former student of having sex while she was a student. It was really terrible - he would write passes for her to come down to the basement in an out-of-the-way classroom and they would have sex. He resigned and it made the news for one day. Never heard anything else about it, though - whether he was arrested or convicted of anything, whether his teaching license was stripped. Frankly, I was amazed at how the incident was kept so quiet and how nothing came of it after one small news cycle.

There have been incidents in Baltimore County. Generally, I think BCPS keeps info like this out of the news if at all possible...particularly when the case has not actually been tried in court or the teacher in question does not admit guilt.

My child had this teacher. He was a great insiration;the kind of teacher people make movies about. Therefore, the news of his violation of a minor is all the more devastating! The news spread across the country among alumni and students and parents alike have been left in disbelief and sorrow. Our number one concern is for the victim. Also, our kids have lost that favorite teacher that they would have remembered all their life. The grief at this loss of an ideal is immense.
