Teachers protest planned this evening

The Baltimore County teachers union, along with the school system's four other bargaining groups, is planning a protest this evening before the board's regularly scheduled meeting.  This is a continuation of the ongoing dispute over pay raises for teachers, which I've mentioned here.

But the unions also say they're protesting the board's possible moving to a single 403(b) investment provider, instead of the current multiple vendors they have to choose from.

This protest follows one TABCO held this spring at the county courthouse, when the union was pushing for at least a 3 percent pay raise for teachers.

It is very sad that Baltimore County teachers are being treated this way. I grew up in the Baltimore County public schools and taught in Baltimore County for 14 years. I was getting so disillusioned with the current BCPS education situation that I decided to see if other counties treated their teachers better. I am now teaching in another MD county and actually feel like I am thought of as a professional. Teachers' time is valued and there is an understanding of the amount of time, effort and genuine care that is put into educating young minds. The BCPS board of ed needs to go back to the school level, spend a few weeks (even days) "in the trenches" to see the hard work and dedication they refuse to reward.

I am afraid that things will continue to go downhill for BCPS until the current administration and board begin showing leadership rather than yield to the demands of a few uninformed and selfish adults who seek their own best interest and goals rather than those of the youngest citizens we are supposed to serve.

as a county teacher, one thing that upset me greatly is the ease in which the board granted the superintendent a raise, and the ease in which he accepted, knowing that his teachers, who don't make even half as much as he does, are doing his hard work and we can't get the same monetary respect. to me, that's a slap in the face.
