School volunteer update

The city school system reports that 142 people signed up yesterday to be volunteers. Starting the week of April 28, schools will hold training sessions for the recruits, outlining the specific things they want and general information on volunteering.

UPDATE, 4/17: As of Wednesday night, the number of volunteers was up to 190.

What screenings will be in place to ensure that pedophiles or those with questionable motives are not in the schools? Will the volunteers have fingerprints taken? If so who pays for them and will they be allowed to be in school until the results are in? What will happen when one of the volunteers are assaulted by a student?

All volunteers must undergo a criminal background check, as required by law, and the school system will cover the cost.

We think the volunteer project is a commendable idea; however, we have concerns relative to the screening process for applicants. How will BCPSS filter out persons with criminal records, i.e. pedophiles, drug addicts? Is there a team in place to handle the screening process? Is BCPSS working in concert with the Baltimore City Police Department? Is there ample time remaining in the school year to implement the program? Is this a sustainable effort? Kudos to Dr. Alonso and staff for this positive approach to a volatile situation.

I commend Dr. Alanso for his efforts to increase community involvement! I think the school system will have no problem weeding out pedifiles and or criminals; however my concern is that the school system is unprepared for the extensive training new volunteers will need in how best to interact with the kids. I fear some of the volunteers who mean well will have real trouble interacting with the children on a level they'll respond to and respect. Without proper training I think you'll see a very negative effect. This is a program that needs to be well thought out and planned to a T before implimenting in order to have a positive effect. Good LucK!!
