Jena 6 Rallies
Just in case you have been living under a rock, there will be a slew of protests nationwide about the “Jena 6” case in Jena, Louisiana.
Here’s a brief recap: Thousands plan to descend on Jena (pronounced JEEN-uh), La., this week to protest a series of incidents stemming from several nooses that were hung from a tree at a high school. That incident sparked a fight, that resulted in the arrest of six African American students.
Many protesters are upset with what they consider harsh treatment and unfair charges handed out to the African American students involved in the fight.
Check out these stories in USA Today. Also check out the Chicago Tribune’s coverage of the case. The Tribune, our sister paper, originally broke the story.
Bus loads of people plan to go Louisiana to protest the sentencing of the African American students. There are also local rallies planned. Rallies are scheduled to be held at: Coppin State University from 12 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. New Shiloh Baptist Church, 2100 N. Monroe Street, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
UPDATE: If you go to the mainpage of The Sun, you can view special video reports from Jena.

Jena 6 is messed up but is it a wise move to hold a rallie at 2100 North Monroe, I mean gunplay does occur up there, why not do it downtown, it gets more press that way

Thanks for posting this. While I have not been living under a rock, I was having a tough time finding a local rally/vigil, other than the one in D.C.
It's extremely important (and about time) that mainstream outlets begin to give this historic case the coverage it deserves.
Peace.

Maybe I don't get it... the black teens charged and now called the "Jena 6" knocked out a white kid and then "stompted him while he was unconscious". I do see that as an assualt and possibly attempted murder. How is it unjust that they were charged with a crime... they committed a crime... that is true. Now the same boy that was stompted has been pursued and attacked again. I am not sure how this is justice... over a prank?

The DA, Walter Reed, says that we should remember the victim, that this case is not and never has been about race... HAS HE LOST HIS MIND???
So what were those nooses that were hung in the tree all about??? And Jay Anderson... are you serious? What about the black kid that was beaten up first... was there no crime committed there? There is NOT equal justice in this country and anyone that doesn't see that is delusional.

"The injury done to him and threats to his survival have become less than a footnote," Walters said Wednesday.
This case has not, never has been about race. It's about finding justice for an innocent victim, holding people accountable for their actions. That is what it's about," he said.
Walter Reed in the quotes above talks about "finding justice for an innocent victim." Tell me, where was the justice for the innocent victims affected by the hanging of the three nooses. Where was the justice when the young man pulled out a shotgun on the black males. Where was the justice when the group of white men jumped and beat the black student.
As stated before, this is not a black/white issue. This is finding justice for all the innocent victims which encompasses the Jena 6. These boys are just as innocent as the boy who was beaten up. Witness testimony and accounts have been conflicting. As of now we are not even sure that these are the young men that were involved in the fight. The witnesses are not even sure of who was involved in the fight. In addition, you have witnesses testifying who were the same individuals that hung the nooses. Not to mention, friends of the Barker family sitting on the jury.
The televised news portrays a group of black kids maliciously beating up a white kid. What about the facts. What about innocent until proven guilty. The evidence does not support the charges, and witness accounts are conflicting not showing without a doubt that these young men are the culprits.
Jena 6 is about truth, and doing what is right...handling issues according and inacting justice for all--everywhere. This is just a starting point for injustice that have already been occuring around this countries--injustices that have gone un-noticed. Innocent lives being taken a way because no one stood up and said that we will not tolerate such treatment of our young people regardless of color.

I think it's sad the teen even had to ask PERMISSION to sit under the tree in the first place. That right there tells you something is wrong in this little town to begin with. Why should he even have to ask to SIT somewhere? This entire ordeal is a sad thing to have happen in the year 2007 and it just goes to show that racism hasn't gone anywhere. It's obviously still here only it's institutionalized. "Since we can't hang them from trees anymore, we'll just put 'em all in prison for life." Well, we're not taking anymore of this nonsense. Regardless of race, these boys should NEVER have be tried as adults, nor should they have ever set foot in any prison. The punishment does NOT fit the crime. Rapists and murders get off way easier and quicker than these young men and that is pathetic. What is going on with the justice system?!?! It's not right. And for the school administrator who said hanging NOOSES from a TREE was a prank?! Please sir, read a book. Any book. Thank you.

Jay Anderson,
I guess I am struck by the fact that you can label the hanging of several nooses from a "for whites only" tree as a prank.
We must have different definitions of a prank. Sitting on a whoopie cushion is a prank...
A noose symbolizes hate -- years of systematic hate. It also is meant to invoke fear; it might as well be a sign of terrorism.
Before I came to The Sun, I worked for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans. There, I covered school systems that neighbored other school systems that -- up until 2005 -- had segregated proms. This sir, is the reality that still exists in America. And before you respond with a comment like "that's just the South," I must warn you that a noose was recently discovered at the University of Maryland, College Park...
Also, Jay, where has the white youth been throughout this entire ordeal? Why was he not tried as an adult? He too committed a crime. Also, I thought segregation ended in this country decades ago. Why was there a designated tree -- at a school no less -- for a particular ethnic group in the first place?

Jay Anderson, you need to read and research the ENTIRE story. The boy who was "beaten" was not a victim. There were several fights and incidents throughout the semester leading up to the final fight that sparked the conviction and charges. You DON'T get it. The punishment does not fit the crime...and the word "crime" is used loosely...Get a clue. It's not a sunny world where we all can live and play freely. It's quite the opposite and we have got to stop being so gullable and admit there is a HUGE problem!

So, I have heard several arguments for why the actions of the Jena 6 were justified. It seems that these arguments are primarily linked to the premise that the white members in the situation were not prosecuted for various crimes they committed. Those seem to ennumerate thusly:
1. Aggravated assault for hanging the nooses
2. Aggravated assault for threatening the black student with a shotgun
3. Aggravated battery for the group of white kids at the party who jumped the black kid
Wouldn't the more appropriate legal remedy for all this be to prosecute the white kids for those crimes instead of freeing the 6 people who also committed aggravated battery? With one solution, you have no law or penalty for all these terrible acts, and in the other scenario everyone who made poor choices has to pay. That would be fairness, not releasing the violent offenders due to local circumstances. Send them all to jail (white and black). Violence can not be supported by the legal system.

I am not shocked that it is being portrayed as though, it was a joke when the Black students asked to sit under a White tree. That in itself, blows my mind. As far as I am concerned, a noose, is just as bad as a swastika. It symbolizes death. Death that was handed out to their ancestors. I am so not shocked that is has been seriously low keyed, by the media. I live in New York, it's barely in the newspapers. I don't understand, there are rappers that can buy 100,000.00 chain for their neck but they can't help a teen make bail. Hardly any celebrities, mention anything about this. Not nearly enuff as they could have. Now on his courtdate, they want to go and rally at the courthouse. There should have been rallies eversince he was takened to prison. I like the way they are making it seem as though there is no racism downsouth, or all the racism is coming from black people. We really believe you! Where the hell is the President!!! Things like this go on, do you really think Barak Obama would get in office, or make it out alive? This is ungodly!!!

Jena 6 suspects are guilty!!
They should have get in touch with media before they decided to stomp a boy to death.
If all blacks who live in Jena feel the racism is that bad, band together to make change before your kids seek out the wrong type of justice.
