Achievement Gap chatter
A story I wrote for Sunday's Idea section about the achievement gap between African Americans and whites has spurred a number of people to express their views on what is holding back minority and poor students. Do you have any questions about the story you would like answered? I will be happy to post answers today.

Many children have not been taught enough information before entering school. Parents need a manual with specific details and lessons explaining what children should know before they attend school, such as the upper and lowercase letters, the days, months, colors, ordinal and cardinal numbers, names of family members, etc. Some children begin school with limited information and never achieve the grade level standards. someone should prepare a manual for parents.

You've cited data on the achievement gap between students at individual schools. Is this based on district data that you synthesized or is there a state report? In other words, where is this data published so that we can see it for ourselves?
Thanks,
Jim
