Police stations in schools

Many of you have heard of school resource police officers. Some have even heard of the concept of community policing. Detroit Public Schools are taking things to a new level. Read this story and tell me what you think about their plans to operate mini-stations within schools.

Despite the comments left at the Free Press' website, it's not a horrible idea. It's another version of the "Community Policing" idea, which gives the kids and the local police an opportunity to get to know each other.

The students get a decent role model and a safe place to go, the police get a good handle on who's who in a given neighborhood—who's friends with whom, what factions exist within the school and the local community, and so forth.

I've seen such a program in Lyndhurst, NJ, and according to both the police officers involved and several of the students with whom I spoke, it worked out well for everyone.
