Time for change?

In Gina Davis' story today about the seeming lull that prevails during the last days of school, one parent offers some suggestions for increasing their productivity (and purpose), including community service or possible career days for students.

What do you think?  How would you like to see your children spend their last days of school?  Or should we let sleeping dogs lie?

I am an educator in BCPSS. The students that came the last week and the last two days did work - it was less formal or structured, but they worked... journal writing, computer/online math quizzes and math games, had discussions about the summer or the school year. Students complained and resisted doing any work feeling it was a waste of time. We had awards assembly and graduation of pre-k and kindergarten and 8th graders. We were busy! Lots of parents stopped by. Some did discourage them from coming since grades were in and attendance was not counted, and attitude and behavior problems. Teachers cleaned and packed.
