Former Ravens player released on bail

Jermaine Lewis, the former Ravens wide-receiver and kickoff returner, has been released on $50,000 bail pending his trial on charges that he resisted arrest at his Baltimore County home.

Police had gone to his house after several motorists on Monday reported his car swerving on county roads near Boring, and running over a sign in front of a volunteer fire company. Police said an officer used a Taser to subdue the retired player, who returned a kickoff to help the Ravens win the 2001 Super Bowl.

I can not believe that you would waist time and space on this. Mr. Lewis was wrong for his actions, however why would you place his address and the report out there. Over the past 2-3 years Maryland has releases drunk drivers over and over and the have walked away.... Give the man some respect....

He was just upset about the new NFL rule change...

And, again I ask, why have all the traffic charges been place on Inactive status? He is only charged with resisting arrest. Even faded "celebrity" must have its perks. smh

One Winning Drive.

I hope Jermaine L gets help if indeed he needs help. As for the taser, I'd like to know far more before assuming Mr. Lewis assaulted an officer. Simply not getting to the ground pronto or answering an officer's question do not justify tasering. This toy is used a bit too frequently by cops who do feel threatened by a variety of citizens who in fact have no intention to attack an officer. Mr. Lewis played with courage and spirit. He deserves our support which doesn't mean we condone his excessive drinking if indeed he was drinking too much. I'd like to see the Ravens step forth and offer him help as well.

They TASERED the guy? We now live in a police state where by police accounts only he "resisted" arrest, had no weapon, and the TASERED him? Regardless of the accusation of driving drunk, every single person in MD should be outraged at the use of tasers on UNARMED citizens. The police lie and state that tasers are the alternative to shooting some one...BS. The police are so fat and lazy, they taser instead of subduing an UNARMED person. Luckily, Jermaine had no underlying medical issue which could have lead to his death by tasering.

Why is it big news that a man hits a SIGN not a human being and has to be humiliated in the press so vehemently? When this man was scoring touchdowns via kick off returns you same people villanizing this man are the same people that cheered the pruple and black. Sad a$$ed commentary for a society who fakes righteous indignation.. When I first heard the report I (as most people) assumed this ex-Raven had hit a human being BUT a bingo sign??? Why not send or deliver a summons? Did they really have to break into this mans home confront him while he was asleep, wrestle with him then Tasing him? WOW, must not be a lot happening in that town! I bet cha they would have shot him for hitting a dog. Yeah me and several of my friends have seen officers beat, kick and stomp people, take their money and tell them that they had better not say a word but we didn't see any officers going to their homes tasing them and being arrested. A SIGN? Come on!!

STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES. SO YOU WERE DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, HAD A PROPERTY ACCIDENT AND DRIVING ON A SUSPENDED LICENCES. SO YOU WOULD HAVE GOTTEN ARRESTED, BOOKED AND LET GO UNTIL YOUR COURT DATE. INSTEAD "STUPID IS" RESIST ARREST, GETS TASERED, TAKE TO JAIL AND HAD TO PAY $50 LARGE TO GET RELEASED. mY HOW THE MIGHT HAVE FALLEN.

Wait, so...they arrested him for resisting arrest. So what was the reason for arresting him before he resisted the arrest?

Why we never heard about Hockey players getting drunk and doing stuff, it's only big news when it's a football or basketball player.

When the star player from that Baltimore hockey team gets in trouble, I promise to give it a good look. -JF

So, yesterday's hit and run became today's he (allegedly) ran over a stop sign? Why would the cops even come to his house?

And as was pointed out...it's perfectly legal to resist an illegal arrest. In fact, if he was tasered w/o a reason on his own property, the cops assaulted him!

My god I am a retired baltimore county Cop and he was not charged with DUI because the officer did not witness him driving. On the other hand the officer should not have even written anything except a report and ticket for hit and run property damage. Why was he there to arrest him anyway. He should have only responded to check on the subject after all the 911 calls were dispatched and do the report. You can not write traffic violation citations unless you as an officer witness it or you summons witnesses to court who did witness the violations. Mr. Lewis lawyer can eat that cop alive and make him look like a fool on the stand. Yes he should not have been driving on a suspended license but if he admits he was then the officer can cite him. Further more the officer did see his car outside parked matching the descrip. of the hit and run vehicle so he had to inquire but taxing uh uh no way over some small argument. How about the Sun changing the title to say it was a sign instead of making it seem like he hit pedestrian.

Why are any of you defending this moron? He was driving drunk, endangering other people and destroying property. Whatever happened to other people doesn't matter. If he wasn't a former Raven, most of you wouldn't care.

The police do not TASER suspected drunk drivers for fun. Those who think they do, or might, have a lot of criminal-type friends. Check yourself, if that applies. If I am right in this assumption admit it, reconsider your position, and read on...

The police are VERY highly educated when it comes to traffic stops, and if the issue presents itself, suspected drunk drivers. Based on this FACT who would you believe...a man reported by SEVERAL motorists to have been swerving on a country road and also confirmed to have run over a street sign in front of a volunteer fire co.?

To my knowledge, and on this I have knowledge, most drunk drivers find themsleves in tierra ingognito upon being pulled over (or being tried to be pulled over). People in unknown territory, especially drunk ones (allegedly) have a tendency to panic. Panic as defined by a surging heart rate, consideration of FIGHT or flight, etc.

Thus I am almost certain the police report is correct and associated posters almost certainly wrong.

" Wait, so...they arrested him for resisting arrest. So what was the reason for arresting him before he resisted the arrest? "

Justin:

He was being arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. Standard operating
procedure everywhere. Fleeing to the supposed safety of home in an effort to avoid prosecution has not been the deal since caveman days. You can run but you can't hide especially when 1/2 the neighborhood calls the cops on you.

To Rodney:

What kind of places do you hang out that presents a front row seat to an allegeded polic beating and summary theft of valuables?

If you live in a place, any place, where the police are not viewed as helpful and protective...MOVE!

Amen, ChrisPW. Break into the guy's house, wake him on his couch, and TASER him. Ridiculous abuse of power . . . par for the course with far too many cops.

I really don't understand what you people are thinking......an officer gives you a command and its your job to COMPLY........EASY DEAL FOLKS........or you get whats coming...... COMPLY......thats it!

Dropped comments - you asked me to point them out to you so I could figure what was wrong -

Hi Peter, I posted to this subject early on that I was wondering why include all the stats on his football career and how that was somehow relevant (a quarter was about his football history). Second was an earlier post on Felicia Snoop Barnes's conviction penalty where I decried the poor sentencing given she was almost in conspiracy territory and my own experience with a super minor infraction but off the chart punishment.

So ... What is it about these posts that puts them so far out there that they can't be shared here? I don't get it.

Thanks
Andrew (do NOT this or my name please this is directed, "privately", to you)

First - the comments have been more entertaining than the actual article itself.

Its stupid, sad, and unfortunate when anyone (allegedly) drinks and gets behind the wheel of a car. As we all know, it can turn tragic in an instant.
Its ironic that some people defend the person because of their celebrity. Id this is Joe Schmuck next door, youre ready to hang him. Jermaines celebrity was why this was reported as prominently as it was - he should be aware of that - it comes with the territory. You cant have it both ways and be in the limelight only when its convenient or positive - thats the way our society works. Bad news always gets more hits on the internet.

Thank you joefoss for your logical comments. Seriously. Straightforward, direct and the truth.

Some of the rest of you need to get a grip.

"I hope Jermaine L gets help if indeed he needs help" IF he needs help???

"Mr. Lewis played with courage and spirit. He deserves our support which doesn't mean we condone his excessive drinking if indeed he was drinking too much" Please disconnect any entertainment celebrity from the situation. What does courage and spirit while being paid millions have to do with real life? Is Jermaine more deserving because of his celebrity? Stop making excuses by saying things like "if indeed he was drinking too much" ..."if indeed he needs help". PLEASE STOP!!! His family and friends should be the ones providing the help and support he needs right now.

"Why is it big news that a man hits a SIGN not a human being and has to be humiliated in the press so vehemently?"
Are you F-ing kidding me? Its just a sign? THe point is the man was driving a one ton vehicle while drunk!! And please tell me what in the article where Jermaine was "humiliated so vehemently"??? He should be embarrassed. Athletes and celebrities need to learn that life and the general public dont owe them anything and they're not above the law like too many of them think.

As far as the police, tasers, etc. I have to believe they were doing their jobs but if its found that the use of the taser was excessive (I agree in some hands they're a dangerous toy) then they need to held accountable too. I'm wondering if there may have been a better way to deal with the situation but I wasnt there so I cant say what really happened of if what was done was right or wrong.

Bottom line however is its time to wake up Jermaine and smell the reality. This is on you - nothing else happened until YOU got behind the wheel of a car while impaired. Bad choice. And its not like drunk driving hasnt been a hot topic we have all been aware of for several years. I'm not saying youre a bad guy, an alcoholic, or anything like that BUT get some help. You were lucky this didnt turn out to be more tragic than it was.

Thank you Itssteeven... If this was these people's yard, fence, property, etc there wouldn't be any patience or acceptance of his actions. And for uncleollie41... he was arrested for HIT & RUN, not for resisting arrest or suspicion of drunk driving. As far as the breaking into the house comment, that's just ridiculous. Do you people who comment on here actually believe what you write? Bottom line is he was responsible for commiting an arrestable traffic offense and in the process of being arrested his actions resulted in his getting tasered. You can blame it on the police or justify your a$$anine comments by saying he was a Raven and we should give him the benefit of the doubt but at the end of the day if this were Joe Shmoe or god forbid a cop that committed these same actions you would be the same people ready to crucify that person at the stake!

I think some people think this was a traffic stop. It wasn't The man was in his own home. So the statements about him driving drunk or under the influence don't hold water. what is the purpose of arresting someone for hitting a sign? There is no information in this article that makes me believe that Lewis should have been arrested.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting.
