Police: Officers shoot man who pulled gun during traffic stop

A 34-year-old man was shot by Baltimore police officers after officials say he pulled a gun on them during a traffic stop in Northeast Baltimore.

Police say plainclothes officers were conducting a drug investigation at about 11 a.m. in the 1400 block of Fillmore Street, in the Coldstream Homestead Montebello neighborhood, and pulled over a Jeep and approached the driver. Detective Donny Moses, a spokesman, said the driver pulled a handgun from between the seats and detectives opened fire on him.

The man was able to speed off and elude officers, and the bullet-riddled vehicle was later located in the 1000 block of Central Avenue near Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore, Moses said. There was blood on the inside, but there was no victim and no weapon.

At about 1:45 p.m., a gunshot victim walked in to University of Maryland Medical Center with a wound to his forearm, he said.

Police determined the victim was the same person who detectives had fired upon, Moses said. Homicide detectives were investigating the case and no arrests have been made. Per policy, the department will not release the names of the officers involved for 48 hours.

Separately, police confirm that a gunshot victim walked in to Good Samaritan Hospital in the Northeast District with a wound to the foot. Police were working to determine where the shooting occurred.

The police-involved shooting is just the fourth such incident this year, and first since April. City police shot 10 people last year, down from 22 the year before and 33 in 2007, according to The Sun's records.

He must have known he was dealing with a cop if he had already pulled over. Pulling a gun on a police officer? Stupid criminal. Another one gone. Good.

It's sad how the police will announce to the public there side of the story. But when you know the people involved and the real side of it. Others will assume the worst.

@ Anonymous

Why don't you STFU? The police wouldn't announce SH!t if the press weren't all up their azz....when asked, they give a statement.....why don't you go ask the drug dealing POS for his version and come back and tell us what that was?

The only "sad" part is that the idiot is still alive. A little more range time could save the taxpayers millions in legal fees. On the other hand, nice job to the officer, you made it home tonight.

@Anonymous,

You can try all you want to make the criminal out to be the victim, as a typical liberal, family of criminal or fellow criminal would....but it's gonna be hard to explain the gun in the car. The criminal ALWAYS has a side of the story that he tells his family or the courts, but reality is totally different. Most of these types of stories start off with..
"I was just minding my own business and only had enough for personal use".... right....

So kill a man who you think you God? On another note........The image they portray people when they are wrong to cover themselves is so demonic and people get sucked into this police fraternity they have and is blind..........and to call a person names how immature and if your a city resident than maybe your tax dollars does help pay for this mob to harsh people but you probably dont live in the city so you'll never understand what the average city resident or in your terms stupid criminal, idiot, drug dealer and the list goes on goes through on a daily basis by Baltimore very own finest BCPD (sarcastically being said) so please dont believe the HYPE!!!!

Why are you people so polar? This is the tiniest sliver of article I ever seen...what can be determined? I tell you. An officer is safe- thank God. A criminal (a HUMAN, granted s/he is a flawed human) is alive- thank God. There is an ALLEGED aggressor (the "criminal"). There is no firearm or what was in the vehicle. Do you not think the simple solve is here is to test the blood in the vehicle against the two shot-wound victims and see who dunnit? Then test for gun powder res and see IF that person actually was bussin caps? C'mon B'more, cut the crap.

I too am a little confused with this officer. You have 15 rounds, use them all until the dirt-bag is neutralized. Pulling a gun during a traffic stop is like putting a bull-eye on your forehead. You can raise my taxes 3 cents to pay for the ammo.

Chalk one up for the good guys !! One down...many to go.

There was NO GUN! Baltimore City Cops, The Commissioner and the MAYOR are ALL LIARS! They tell this man to put his vehicle in park he reaches for the gear to put the vehicle in PARK and they SPRAY his vehicle with bullets which is why there was NO WEAPON found! This is why many of the citizens don't respect COPS because most of them are KILLERS! We can't even get officers to respond to burglaries in place but they are quick to aim and fire at people.

For the person that wrote "NO WEAPON" found. Did it occur to you that maybe the dummy that pulled the gun out on the police got rid of it after he drove away or maybe you think he was suppose to keep it as evidence against himself.

Hooray! Everyone's exercising their 2nd amendment rights!

I find it funny how people like John can make such callous comments about another human life. This man was not pulled over, he was ambushed by plainclothes cops with guns drawn. If he was shot in one arm and driving with the other--which arm was he using to pull a gun!!!! Why didn't he shoot back??? Where is the gun??? I am glad that everyone involved is alive. Police are human and make mistakes. I think they made a big mistake and are trying to cover their butts. If you tell someone to put the car in park, naturally they have to reach for the gearshift--scared ass officer shot this man for no reason. John, READ THE HEADLINES--officers are going to jail too.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
