Police charge man with raping woman in Mount Vernon

UPDATE: Baltimore police corrected the name of the suspect -- he is Karriem Mason, 37, with a last known address in the 1100 block of McKean Ave. That's in West Baltimore, in the Sandtown-Winchestern neighborhood, two blocks from the Western District police station.

He was arrested on a charge of marijuana possession on May 28, and has a court date scheduled for June. Court records show two other drug possession arrests in 2010, but no convictions.

Baltimore police have charged a man with raping a woman in her apartment in Mount Vernon:

This morning, 37 year old Kareem Mason has been formally charged with rape and sexual assault for the attack which took place yesterday afternoon in the 900 block of St. Paul Street. Mr. Mason is accused of raping a woman in her twenties while she was moving personal items into her apartment.

Everyone involved in apprehending this individual deserves a thank you from the entirety of Baltimore. The fact that it went from crime to capture so quickly is a testament to all involved.

I find it interesting the Sun has no problems publishing the name, address and mug shot of man accused of rape, an accusation based entirely on a single account told his alleged victim, yet we don't know the victim's name nor are we allowed access to view her criminal history. If the alleged rapist is found to be innocent of all charges his life is still ruined through public humiliation. Good going, Sun.

It is unforunate the Maryland State Police do not allow women like the victim to concealed carry a firearm without being assaulted or having a specific threat. I cannot say for sure that if the victim was armed she would have been able to fight off her attacker, but at least she would have had the opportunity to defend herself. It is disgusting that Maryland citizens cannot defend themselves against crimes like this because of the MSP.

This is the same guy that attacked my neighbor in my building and tried raping her one block away from this other person. Sad that he wasnt caught the first time. I hope any others come forward.

Who is the victim?
Where is the victim?
This is my cousin who like everyone isn't perfect but this is blowing my mind. I need more questions answered to accept this and if this is true on behalf of my family I'm sorry for your pain n suffering but I need to know more this is very shaky and the case itself seems doctored up. I have further details anyone pro truth and anti bullshit give me a reply email at etcsmusic@gmail.com

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
