Officer Rigby released from hospital

In a brief update this morning, Baltimore police said Officer Teresa Rigby, injured when she fell from I-83 in a traffic accident, has been released from the hospital and is undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation facility.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said Rigby has a "long road ahead" and that supporters are looking to establish a fund to help pay for her medical care. "She is expected to be out of work for a very, very long time," Guglielmi said.

Rigby was standing outside of her police cruiser assisting a disabled motorist on June 21 when another driver careened into her vehicle, sending her hurtling over the side of the elevated highway near the Pepsi plant. She fell some 30 feet to the concrete below and reportedly suffered severe leg injuries and required facial reconstruction surgery.

Police have yet to release a cause of the accident, or the identities and conditions of the other three motorists who required hospitalization. Guglielmi said the department would not release information while the investigation was ongoing.

I do not understand why she should need help. She was injured on the job, she should get full benefits and salary.

Policeunion step and help this young police officer.

A fund need not be established for her medical care. She is covered under Workers Comp. We can still make donations, but her bills will definitely get paid.

The Baltimore City Government is a corrupt sink hole. Shutting down Fire Departments and cutting other services to hurting citizens, swallowing them up while continuing to pad their own wallets. Why this Police Officer should ever have to worry about her medical bills is a mystery to me. She was injured in the line of duty! Maybe some of the over paid bureaucrats should be required to donate one of their paychecks to help her!!!!

The driver who hit her should be paying for all of her care - worker's comp would only apply if it was an uninsured driver and the uninsured motorist fund also refused to pay. Why would you report that this fund is being set up when the publicity clearly helps raise funds for some kind of scam? Is this journalism? Why not ask these questions yourself, before reporting on this "fund"?

Well goodness. People set up funds for donations all the time for people who are killed or people who are injured, and we often report as much. The police department said it has been inundated with people asking how they can help or where to send flowers, and this was what they said they are doing to accommodate those requests. -JF

So the police department told you that the officer will have medical costs that she has to cover? Did you ask why neither they nor the driver nor the uninsured motorist fund will be covering these costs? I'd like to know the answer.

----
They said that people had been asking how they could help, and so a foundation is being set up so that those who wish to send something may do so. I am focused on trying to learn more about the woman stabbed to death in her home this morning, as opposed to scrutinizing a fund where people who want to can send help to an injured officer.

worker comp is required to pay her bill s workers comp will also collect all monies from the other insurance compay to reimburst what they hae payed out and the offiicer will collect a pay from workers comp there is no need of a fund if she takes any of the fund money workers comp will stop paying

HAPPY TO KNOW SHE MADE IT! GOD IS AWESOME! <3

Depending on how her benefits work she will have deductibles, rent/mortage food, BG&E. There is short term and long term disability and she may not have thought to even sign up for short term as she might have a) thought I am healthy don't need it, or it was too expensive.

There is no insurance that I know of that pays everything.

Jesus, you people are begrudging charitable giving to an injured officer? Sure she'll get compensated and will get workers comp, but it's really helpful to have cash *now* to pay for all the incidentals, like parking at the hospital, miscellaneous medical supplies, food, etc. She'll need a home health aide if she doesn't have relatives nearby, etc etc.

I am stunned that a fund will be established. She's got phenomenal benefits and can, with a handicapped tag, park for free in patient parking. A home health aide will be covered, as will all of her medicines and needs.

May be the fund is being established so she can retain a lawyer and sue? If not, what oversight will it have? Oh, that's right, none.

Shenanigans I say!

I am utterly amazed that people will take ANY excuse to rail against the government! My God, this woman - this officer - has a very long road ahead of her. Insurance does not cover everything! What about the additional living expenses she will have? What about funds to help cover lost wages of relatives who may have to care for her? There is travel and parking. And where is the expressions of sympathy and encouragement for the officer? If you don't want to contribute then don't, but by God, please stop whining and complaining about everything. Believe it or not, sometimes you CAN believe in people's sense of good!
Thank you Officer Rigby for your service. I'm praying to continued progress and a full recovery!

Are you serious??? She was hurt serving the people! you people! She still has bills! Im sure she has great benefits, however she still has payments to be made, just like everyone else! A mortgage, a car payment, utility bills, those bills dont just disappear and no benefit she could possibly have will cover those bills TOMORROW. Its going to take time for disability and such to kick in to pay her bills. She is young and has her whole life ahead of her and yes, she IS going to need an attorney whether she chooses to sue or not! How insensitive can some people be? Really!

Robert you are a total C. I can only hope someday thay you are hurtled off a multi-storied piece of infrastructure and onto the pavement below. Maybe it'll give you a less snarky perspective.

God forbid you use cash that would have gone for your post-kickball Fed Hill Jager Bombs to cough up a little cash for this officer and her family.

Folks, she has benefits and will continue to get paid while recovering. Her salary? Paid. Her benefits? Paid. Disability insurance is a requirement of police officers so that'sll kick in. So say what you want, but it looks like all bases are covered.

Is her service to the city admitable? Absolutely. Is her getting hurt in the line of duty sad? Absolutely. But, being hurt while doing your job is not cause for someone to win the lottery and be given money tax free without any conditions.

Tell me what the money will be used for and I'll reconsider my postion, but like the kids weraing basketball jersey's at the bottom of 83 who say their money is for "basketball camp" there is no guarantee the money will go towards anything related to her injuries.

Robert, I am so very sorry that life has left you jaded, and with little (if any) empathy toward others. This officer has hardly won the lottery. She is 27 years old, with two broken legs, a fracture pelvis and a reconstructed face... Prayerfully, she will walk again. Prayerfully, she will have a full recovery.
Prayerfully, you will never experience what she has. If you do, I certainly hope people will show you more compassion that than what you are expressing for this officer.

This officer has suffered serious injury while serving the people. She should not have any medical bills to pay and she should also be funded in the amount of her salary, hence her utilities bills and all of her commitments should be covered as was normal for her. If people want to donate to show their gratitude that is fine too.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
