Three shot in West Baltimore

Three people were shot - one who suffered serious injuries - in West Baltimore's Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood Friday afternoon, police said.

At a crime scene that spanned several city blocks of mostly vacant homes, police said at least one gunman opened fire at about 3 p.m. on three males. An adult was struck in the stomach in the 900 block of N. Calhoun St., and a man and a 16-year-old were struck in the face and found in the 1200 block of W. Mosher St.

Police spokesman Det. Jeremy Silbert said the males shot in the face did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, though the man shot in the stomach was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Detectives were interviewing possible witnesses, as groups of residents waited on the steps of vacant homes waiting for the crime scene tape to come down so they could return home. One woman could be overheard saying she saw one of the victims lying in the street and asking a fleeing friend, "How you gonna leave me here, homie?"

eurpoeans holler dictatorship, european was dictating to us since slavery, and now they are appaulled, someone needs to put the whites into slavery let experience the pain of dictatorship.Whites soon to forget the pain african americans have endure over 500 years.I will not be a part of the white supremacy system. One race has powerover another race. europeans needs to expire.

10 to 1 the shooters were out on probation after 3 or more convictions for assault, attempted murder, rape.....

Sad to say. Just another day in Baltimore.

Any update on the condition of the victim shot in the stomach?

I am truly worried when it appears that the only talent most young men in Baltimore possess, ie, shooting, is marred by frequent misses. Increasingly I read of "shootings", but no fatalities. Can't President Obama create a "program" for such uneducated young people. What will happen to them if they shoot people who survive, and who will then hunt down the shooter? As Presidnt Obama said so eloquently the other day, America is defined by its spending programs for the needy. Not by the bravery of its soldiers, not by the ingenuity of its capitalists who created the highest living standard in the history of the world. Nor by the giving in the private sector of the wealthy who support the bulk of arts and hospitals in this nation. No, it is the very folk in Sandtown, clutching the guns that are their only possession, after hundreds of years of oppression, who need our govt's helping hand, the deficit be damned. We must enlist our finest military officers to train the youth of the communities like Sandtown, to develp the mortal expertise that they so desperately desire and need. I know America will rise to this challenge.

Hello from Tampa. When will the badest stop. I heart goes out to the family. I move here to Tampa to get away from the badness but badness is slowly coming here here. At least is summer all year round here.

Directed towards Fran who made the 1st comment...are you serious??? That has got to be the biggest joke I've heard. How about the Irish who were slaves brought over here to build New York, Chicago, New Orleans, plus others??? Don't give me that crap about how blacks were the only ones ever to be oppressed. I am Irish and you will never hear me complain about that or want reparations. You, yourself in no way, shape or form have ever been affected by slavery so give that card up. And, how exactly does slavery tie in to black on black crime in a neighborhood of vacant houses? Let me guess, whites are forcing you into poverty and making you live in those conditions? I would wish nasty things on african americans, but that just isn't my style; and from reading the paper everyday I notice that blacks are already doing a good job erasing themselves from Baltimore hahaha! Maybe instead of being racist you can make a change by educating your youth, and help guide them to better lives instead of growing up to be thugs that only add to the city's crime data. Thanks for showing your ignorance, and next time you make a public statement you should try doing a little research on history and grammer.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
