Police investigating shooting near convention center

UPDATE, 11 a.m. - Police say the shooting happened on the 14th floor of the Hanover Square building, a high-rise housing complex for seniors and the disabled, reports Liz F. Kay. The victim, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to spokesman Kevin Brown. Police said they are exploring a number of possible motives and can't say whether there was forced entry. They were reviewing video surveillance and urging anyone with information to call police.

Brown called the shooting an "extreme abnormality" for the area.

City police are on the scene of a serious shooting just a block from the Inner Harbor. Police said on Twitter that a man was shot at about 9:20 a.m. in unit block of West Conway Street, which runs from the Harbor to Camden Yards and behind the Baltimore Convention Center. Additional details were not immediately available, but we have a reporter headed to the scene.

That specific block is the Sheraton hotel and the Hanover Square high rise apartment, though police say the shooting happened in the Central District, indicating the shooting may have occurred on the north side of the street where the hotel is located. The border of the Southern and Central districts splits Conway in half.

Wow!! Shooting in broad daylight downtown. Thug wanabees don't discriminate where they want to take out another thug wanabee who probably dissed them. I could be wrong, but I am most likely not that far off. Another safe day in Balmer.

Probably Colonel Mustard in the Conservatory with a pistol.

Kmasch, as the article provides, the shooting was of a 40 year old man on the 14th floor of a low income, senior housing complex. So I'm willing to bet that (1) it was not in broad "daylight"; (2) it was not a "thug wanabee ... taking out another thug wanabee"; (3) you are, in fact, wrong; and (4) you are far off.

56 homicides this year, that's 110 days since january 1st, that means there is a murder every other day! what a great town to live, especially when yuo consider police corruption, a corrupt mayor, drug problems, and high property tax rates...everyone pack your bags and move to baltimore!

What is the definition of 'thug wanabee'?

"Mike Johnson" - Most of those 56 homicides happened in isolated areas that are well known for drug activity and violent crime. Most people who live in neighborhoods like Fells Point, Harbor East, Federal Hill, Locust Point, Canton are no more affected by the homicide rate than those people living out in the boring suburbs. This incident was described as an "extreme abnormality" for the area. Or did you miss that part of the article? You can't paint the entire City of Baltimore with one brush stroke. And would it be too much to ask that we wait to know the details of what happened before everyone draws their own conclusions? Gee whiz, there are so many people out in the counties having sour grapes for lunch who can't wait to pounce on bad news from the city.

The police announce shootings on Twitter? Great way to keep the public informed. If you don't want them to know anything. Dictators and morons like Charlie Sheen and the reality "stars" are ready made for Twitter.

Great for those who don't wantt to inform or those whose vocabulary consists of "Wow" and "Amazing".

I have a friend that lives in that complex and pays $58 for a waterview one bedroom apartment. Nice to see where our tax dollars go.

RF-At the time of my post there wasn't any information except for the shooting itself and location. With that said, there will be more revealed that will show just how far off I am. By the way, I am never afraid to admit when I am wrong, as I previously stated. It was in broad daylight whether it was indoors or not Einstien. Thank you very much Mr. Man.

BALTIMORE IS A GREAT AND LOVELY CITY TO LIVE IN. I KNOW BECAUSE I LIVED THERE FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS. LOVED THE CITY. I AM A N.C. NATIVE AND NO CITY HERE CAN COMPARE. GOD BLESS B-MORE.

Cham-The only way I could define "thug wannabees" since I guess you have no imagination or common sense, is to say a criminal type who thinks they are a "thugs" or "gangstas" like their idols they see on t.v. like the Gangland show or movies just because they have a gun and dress the part and know the lingo. They are really just local idiots, dumber than a box of rocks who kill because it's cool. Get it?

Kmasch, I think you have a very vivid and active imagination.

Yeah I agree with Cham. As long as it's just poor minorities shooting each other in their own neighborhoods, it doesn't matter.

Kmasch--->That happens to be my boyfriend's cousin. Its just your luck that he was not any type of thug wannabe. Please just stay tuned for more information. And after you hear more of what happened please don't comment on anything else before you know what you are talking about.

Have A Nice Evening All!!

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
