Man charged with pushing man into Harbor held without bail

According to the Maryland Judiciary Case Search database, 20-year-old Wayne Black, charged with first-degree murder this week for pushing Ankush Gupta into the Inner Harbor in 2008, has been ordered held without bond. Black had apparently gone into shock yesterday at his first bail review hearing, slumping over and not responding to a judge's questions, prompting the hearing to be delayed until today.

I did not attend today's bail review, and I'm working to track down what exactly happened. Black has no prior criminal record beyond a marijuana possession charge, and I've seen (though rarely) defendants with long records charged with gun violence who were allowed to post bail.

Police say Black confessed to pushing Gupta into the harbor in August 2008; Gupta drowned, and with few leads the investigation into his death went cold until police received a tip recently.

WOW...is that why he pushed him in the harbor? I think these kids (adults)smoke too much weed and watch reality TV tend to think there is something funny about pushing someone into the harbor. Wake up, this is the real world you can't do things like that for a laugh and just walk away. If he was such a great kid and someone who cares, why did he take this man's life. This was not some slapstick humorous act with a punchline "dude" he took a life! Period. He fainted because he's scared that he'll have to face penalties in the judicial system period. Let's see if he has the power to push "big bubba" off of him when he goes to jail...where he belongs. His act is no different from that of the "thugs" in Bmore city that get discussed on these pages on a daily basis.

dwill.. i am friend of ankush gupta.i read your comment above first i want to take my time to thank you for your support and secondly i want to answer mr. lee.... mr lee so you are saying he is a good kid ha?? you need to come and see his family. you need to see what damaged wayne black caused a innocent middle class family his joke caused someone his life. he was the only guy in the whole family. he left his old sick father, who cant breath without oxygen. he left his old mother who cant work. he left his 2 sisters who he supposed to look after his parents. mr lee i am not saying he is a bad person i cant judge him because i dont know him. i am telling you what i know because i lost a freind who was like brohter to me and his family lost a son who meant everything to them please dont leave comments like this to hurt someone's felling lets leave this on god because he will serve the justice..

In reference to the comment from "we need justice!!", I tend to agree with what you said about not judging a person if you don't know them, but on the other hand, I think that some of the comments that you made could be hurtful too. #1 "...his joke caused (cost) someone his life." NOT true.. if Gupta had known how to swim (not Black's fault) he would not have drowned. DWILL, this also applies to your comment, "If he was such a great kid and someone who cares, why did he take this man's life." It is extremely unfortunate that someone lost their life, but it is also unfortunate, that someone who would not purposely take a life, is going to spend time with others who wouldn't think twice about it. #2 "...when he goes to jail...where he belongs." Again, NOT true. If every person, that had a moment of bad judgement, that was involved in a hurtful "accident", went to jail ("where they belong"), there wouldn't be anyone left to do the things that keep this country running, and provide for the people that live here.
I'm not defending Waynes actions, I'm just putting another point of view out there. I'm sure everyone knows how bad it feels to lose someone they love, whether it be from death, or from misfortune. You're not thinking about the families and friends of the accused, who are "losing" their kids, and their best friends to the judicial system. I am truely sorry for the loss that has occurred, on both sides of this tragedy.

a good friend of mine leads a Christian skateboard ministry in Baltimore...allegedly, wayne has been a regular attendee as of late...does this excuse his actions? absolutely not. does this help the family cope with their loss (BOTH families)? not even close. does this mean he shouldn't have to answer for his crime? no way...

what this DOES mean, though, is that this kid - while his actions were stupid, impulsive and FATAL - haunted him the past two years as they did the victim's family...he sought help from the Lord and i pray that through these trials and tribulations, both parties can find the peace they so desperately need...i thank God that some of the ridiculous things i've done in the past never resulted in loss of life...i will pray for ALL that are involved...to the family, please please please - i know you're hurting, but please remember that justice does not require anger. i cant even begin to understand your pain, but please seek peace and compassion...i dont know this kid's heart, but i can bet that the past two years of his life were spent wishing he could take back his actions.

This may only end up being seen by the family, who might want to come back and look at the comments. But we wanted to put it out there that we have first hand information about this case. First of all, Ankush's drowning was closed as an accidental death. It took 6, 7, even 8 different times contacting the police and trying to tell them the real facts surrounding his death; even being hung up on and talked down to is what was endured to make known what really happened to Ankush. The cops had everything they needed for a good period of time and still waited until after officer Sylvester was fired for man-handling a skateboarder at the harbor to arrest Wayne. It seemed like they were trying to make an excuse for that vicious officer by using Ankush's death to prove a point.

As for Wayne Black, he absolutely KNEW he killed that boy that night. No question about it, Wayne knew exactly what happenend to Ankush from shortly after the incident happened. Wayne said that he heard the boy screaming for help but that it sounded weird to him, because he was taking on water drowning. As for his friends, he was too worried about what they would think about him, he was "too cool" to jump in and save Ankush, He made the decision to run away and leave Ankush drowning in the harbor.

Since the inident, he's been known to make comments among chosen few that made no sense up until now, such as, "I hve reasons why I don't cut my hair," but when asked why by an outsider of his chosen few, would never answer the question. That was inside bragging.

One of the guys, probably one of the skaters who was asked at the inner harbor if they had seen anything and lied, his girlfriend saw on the news that Ankush had drowned and notified everybody that was there that night what had happenend to Ankush, including Wayne. So he had known since day 1 what had happened to Ankush.

Up until a certain point, Wayne was ready to have all his little skater friends lie for him at court. The story was going to be, he didn't say what boy had been pushed into the water at the inner harbor and that he hadn't pushed Ankush, it was someone else. That was until he recieved his discovery and "discovered" that that lie would not work.

I hope that this has brought peace to you, and the untire Gupta family. The word of a Christian.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
