Jessamy blasts back at Bealefeld for supporting opponent

Baltimore State's Attorney Patricia C. Jessamy is blasting back at the city's police commissioner for putting up a campaign sign on the lawn of his house supporting her challenger in the Sept. 14 Democratic primary.

Jessamy, using her campaign office stationary, called Frederick H. Bealefeld III's foray into politics "unprecedented and inappropriate" and she said the "overt actions by a police commissioner to influence the outcome of an election can only led to divisiveness and distrust in the community."

The two top law enforcement officials -- Jessamy is elected, Bealefeld is appointed -- have feuded for years over policing strategies, quality of arrests and investigations and whether prosecutors are aggressive enough in pursing cases and jailing offenders.

Former federal prosecutor and defense attorney Gregg Bernstein is Jessamy's first serious challenger in eight years and its trying to tap into the frustrations of city crime and repeat offenders graduating to more serious offenses before they get serious prison time.

Jessamy took a swipe at Bealefeld in her statement, suggesting the commissioner is not focused on his job. "It is Mrs. Jessamy's hope that Commissioner Bealefeld will refocus his efforts on apprehending the perpetrators of crimes and assembling evidence to be presented in court and that he will leave the politics to others."

Here is Jessamy's statement:

Press Release August 06, 2010

This is absurd. Last time I checked, Bealfeld is a citizen and voter in Baltimore City. He has a right, as a private citizen, to vote as he chooses and - if he chooses, to openly acknowledge it. Surely Jessamy's openly voiced her support for candidates before - and with much more bombast and self-righteousness.

Typical Jessamy buffoonery. Perhaps if she spent more time prosecuting and less time whining, she wouldn't have to worry about Bernstein.

Instead, she'd rather release spurious press releases to hide the fact that her administration is an abject embarrassment to justice and a black eye for Baltimore. The sooner she's gone, the sooner this town can start cleaning up.

Try learning proper capitalization Jessamy.

Bealefeld's foray into politics may be "ill advised". But I would suggest it's not nearly as ill-advised as Patricia Jessamy's foray into medicine, when her spokesperson Margaret Burns assesed Zach Sowers' terminal brain injuries as having been caused by a fall.

Oh, and called his widow a liar.

Classy.

"It is Mrs. Jessamy's hope that Commissioner Bealefeld will refocus his efforts on apprehending the perpetrators of crimes and assembling evidence to be presented in court...."

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

The Baltimore police have their problems and one of their biggest is the laziness of the prosecutors office. They constantly take plea deals with little or no jail time for violent offenses, wouldn't dream of taking anything into court unless the evidence is overwhelming and STILL manage to screw up cases!
That office has to change and it MUST start at the top.

Good for Bealefeld.
Jessamy has been an INEFFECTIVE FAILURE to the police & citizens of Baltimore.
Where can I get my sign (to post in the county)?

I am absolutely sure that it truly is "Mrs. Jessamy's hope" that Bealefeld not support her opponent. She hopes in vain. It may be ill-advised, but I am thrilled that the commissioner has the nerve to do post a sing and thumb his nose at this pitiful excuse for a state's attorney. I cannot wait to cast my vote for Bernstein.

When you promote based on skin color rather than merit and run a city government as a job bank you will ultimately pay the price. Or rather the taxpayers and the citizens will pay the price in collapsed home prices and rampant corruption and crime. Vote for someone who will actually do something about crime in Baltimore. It may be your last chance.

What happens when there is already distrust and divisiveness in the community?

I have to agree with the current running through the comments - the commissioner is a private citizen as well, and he is permitted (last I checked) to have his own opinions and express them. I would echo her objections if he'd put the sign in front of police headquarters, or on a city-owned car, but... his home is his property.

Shame on the state's attorney for trying to tell someone how they should think.

I think the public in general is disappointed in PJ's track record.

Anything that upsets Mrs. Jessamy can't be all bad! Time for her to go - far, far away! Hopefully she'll take her very, very annoying spokeswoman with her.

Jessamy is opposed to a police commissioner to influence the outcome of an election? What country does she live in? Supporting candidates by anyone who chooses to support them goes back to Washington. The president not the district. I wonder if she would be so violently opposed if the sign in his yard had her name on it.

Ummm does the name Larry Gibson ring a bell you hypocrite. Oh wait... only certain people that work in city government are allowed to have opinions and only if they are in your favor. Amazing!

Is she allowed to have re-elect Jessamy campaign heading on her press release????

Answer to last comment from PH: Yes, she is allowed to have re-elect on her press release. It was issued by her campaign headquarters, not from her office in the courthouse. Separate staff, separate money.

I think it's funny that PJ thinks that Bealefeld is focusing on politics and not his job. It probably took him all of 30 seconds to put that sign up and given that it is at his house, it was not done on the police officer dime. It probably took PJ longer than that to draft her press release, and it was clear from the timing of the release that it was done during work hours. So whose focus is on politics and not on their work? Just proves that PJ is the ultimate hypocrite.

I agree with many of those commenting, and can hardly decide which feature of Mrs. Jessamy's screed is the most alarming...or ridiculous? Mr. Bealefeld is entitled to exercise his first amendment rights. Mrs. Jessamy apparently believes her mission now extends to that limiting that aspect of the Constitution. Mrs. Jessamy welcomes endorsements from others in the public sector. Why is Mr. Bealefeld, in particular, acting "inappropriately" in expressing support for a particular candidate? The venomous tone of Mrs. Jessamy's press release really is beyond belief, and borders on hysterical. This is not a reflection of the type of judgment I want candidates for office in my city to exhibit. Finally, the suggestion that Mr. Bealefeld focus on his job is so offensive, that I simply cannot give it credence. I have not been a politically active person historically, but I now cannot wait to actively campaign against Mrs. Jessamy and for her opponent.

Yeah, Hermann, you are so busy creating mountains out of molehills that you miss an actual story. The fact that Patricia Jessamy is conducting campaign business on the taxpayer dime, when she should be working. I guess even if you did look in to it, you would just publish some insipid quote from Marty Burns to explain it away.har

I attended a Ravens game and when I left I saw Bealefeld leave the stadium w/ his jersey on in a brand new SUV with the tinted windows rolled down and a parade of BCPD behind him. No one would hane know it was him had he rolled up the windows. But he wasted the taxpayers money. NO to him or anyone he endorses.

WRONG Mrs. Jessamy. It is the senseless acts of murder and presense of repeat offenders with lenghty criminal records walking the streets of Baltimore that will influence the outcome of the election! Frederick H. Bealefeld has it right.

This is just another example of why Ms. Jessamy has out lived her use in the State's Attorney's Office.

BALTIMORE RAISE UP AND GIVE THIS BEAUTIFUL LADY A MUCH NEEDED VACATION!

We need a prosector at the helm, not a social worker.
I am switching from Independent to Democrat just for the opportunity to vote against Jessamy. She must go. She lost in 2007 with her mishandling of the Zach Sowers fatal beating.

The important question here is, would Ms. Jessamy have posted such a vitriolic rant against the police commissioner's "participation" in politics if the sign in his front yard had said "JESSAMY"? The answer is, of course not. Because she is a hypocrite.

And by the way, has she ever released one quotation to the Baltimore Sun where she isn't blaming somebody for something? She acts like a five year old who blames her brother, her sister, her teacher, her parents for getting in trouble without acknowledging that everybody bears some responsibility for the current state of our criminal justice system.

Nickel's comments are right on point. When I worked for the city (13 1/2 long years) it was a total waste of time. I was just about the only person who wasn't related to a supervisor, or arrived on the job with a letter in my hand from a politician. Promotions were racially based, as was overtime. My supervisor was paid by the city, vendors who he told decisions went through him, and spend many hours conducting his rental property business on city time in city trucks. Corruption in the City government starts at the top and trickles all the way down to the 6 guys watching 2 dig a hole on Hanover St. Drunk.

Kimmie really? U don't think SRB, Pat Jessamy, O'Malley etc. Get police escort? They all do!!!!

A little thin skinned Pat? Can't take constructive criticism? A little worried about your next performance evaluation? Might have to get a real job?Do your job and you won't have to worry about a sign.

I think that Bealefield is the best Commissioner the BPD has had in at least ten years! Probably since Bishop Robinson, there hasnt been a Commissioner who knows how to do the job. Fred needs some help putting criminals in jail and keeping them there. Most crimes in Baltimore are committed by the same heinous characters. This encourages the young in our city to follow in their footsteps because there is no penalty for those who commit crimes and get caught. Maybe, the Commissioner could fix more of the problems with BPD (bad cops, etc.) if he wasnt handcuffed by politicians ensuring their incompetent friends were in the top brass of the department. (neither deputy deserves the post they hold nor do they support the commissioner, simply waiting for him to make a mistake so their friend can make a push for them to be his replacement). Lets create a department of individuals who care about reducing crime in baltimore and bringing taxpayers back.

As a Baltimore city resident I wish Jessamy had the same passion for putting away thugs as she does for her rant against the police commish. Why don't you ask for the death penalty now and then? We finally have a good commish, not a loser like Norris, so let's support him!

"Politically correct" doesn't work. It's about time someone who matters realized Jessamy isn't getting it done.

I'm sure that Bealefeld didn't get distracted from his job when Bernstein's campaign was erecting the sign.

Jessamy is an incompetent baby. I can't wait to help vote her out.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
