Marine fatally stabbed at Baltimore party

UPDATE (1/27): A profile of Ray and his journey from foster care to the Marines color guard, and the birthday celebration his family had without him the day after his death, can be found here

Private First Class Darius Ray, who turned 20 on Jan. 19, was fatally stabbed at a party early Saturday in North Baltimore when a group of people who had been kicked out came back with a knife. This morning, police announced the arrest of three people: 26-year-old Michael Wiggins; 22-year-old Vernon Hadley; and 27-year-old Nicky Woodward. More than 30 people were interviewed, and I'm trying to verify that police found the suspects by following a blood trail.

We're learning more about Ray, who was a 6-foot-5 three-sport standout in high school and joined the Marines, stationed in Southeast DC. So far, a DC television station has interviewed his former track coach in Potomac, Md. An article in the Gazette newspaper appears to have profiled Ray's foster mother just last month.

When Lennice Hudson first suggested the idea of becoming foster parents almost 15 years ago, her husband thought she was "mad." But over time, by teaching them respect and setting rules, taking them to church, and exposing them to role models like their biological children and extended family, the Hudsons taught their foster children to overcome the emotional obstacles childhood had placed in their way.

"She instilled a greater sense of discipline and responsibility," said Darius Ray of his foster mother.

I also found what appears to be Ray's Twitter page. Just a few days ago he tweeted that he was "Stuck in Bmore" and talked about his birthday.  I wonder if the party in question was a birthday party. UPDATE: Since I posted his Twitter page, I searched for people referencing his Twitter name and there's a number of people leaving condolences.

@Stee301 R.I.P TO MY BROTHA @raysongz2010 I truly cant believe this. I love you son. this is to crazy killed right in front of my face smh

What do we know about the suspects? According to electronic court records, Nicky Woodward (whose name and birthdate are all over the map in court records) appears to have been charged with attempted first-degree murder in 2003 (and was found not guilty). Hadley has a handful of drug arrests and an assault charge, but nothing kicked up to the Circuit Court level and no major convictions. Wiggins is set to go on trial in February on charges of second-degree assault, harassment, and concealing a deadly weapon.

Ray is the third member of the armed forces killed in the past month in Baltimore. Army Private Clifford Jamar Williams, 22, was shot while coming from the grocery store during a brief return to Baltimore from Afghanistan, and former Marine Stephen Makia, 28, found dead by his brother in a house that had been ransacked.

Baltimore hoods don't like it when one tries to make a better life

your ignorant i lost a great amazing friend.. and karmas a bitch.. so i hope your death is somethng painful and miserable.. so that no one will be at your funeral..

woodard was found not guilty in that case in 2003, and also why did the police fail to mention that Woodard was stabbed also!! I'm sad and sorry to see what happen but the police know who did it the witnesses told them so i dont understand why Woodard is being arrested... I'm very upset that they are just taking innocent people that was at the wrong place at the wrong time to jail to be charged with murder that they did not do!!!! This is far from over, the police has the weapon and everything, one knife and the story they are giving just dont add up i'm sorry to say but justice needs to be served. Arrest the killer and let the innocent go

I looked this Marine up on an internal resource because I thought he might have been stationed at my unit (I am stationed in SE D.C.). Apparently he was an infantry Marine from Marine Barrack - 8th and I.

This means he was an exceptional Marine.

RIP and Semper Fi.

i knew Ray we were stationed together. We hung out we had nothing but good times. Right now i want Justice and i want it to be swift and correct. Ray we at the barracks will always miss you bro. Watch out for us we will see you again.

It's sad, More US service members have been killed in Baltimore, than in combat action in Iraq, over the last 60 days. It's safer to be in Baghdad than Baltimore. My heart goes out to the fallen Marine's family and unit members. God Bless You PFC Ray.

How do you figure? According to the Washington Post's list of casualties in Iraq, there have been eight deaths of service members in the past 60 days. -Justin

its a shame how baltimore turned out to be i lived there from 1967 till 2000 now in ky man it was like a war zone when i moved and not getting better i suggest all the good people of baltimore is to move to another state baltimore is not going to change rip to the marine

Justin,

seven of those eight deaths have been non-combat related. I don't know what the actual causes of death were, but they were from bullets, IEDs, knives, or rockets.

Dave,

Given your appallingly bad grammar, I would have to say that your leaving Baltimore helped raised our city's collective IQ by a few points. Do us a favor, and stay in Kentucky. Thank you.

Darius was a genuine spirit and did not deserve this. He is survived by so many people who LOVE him as he will LIVE through THEM. I trust justice will be done.
There will be a candlelight vigil held tonight 1.25.10 @ 6:30pm, Darius' hometown. Friends are welcome, friends know how to reach us.WE LOVE YOU!

Your Big "little" Sister

I just found out that you cannot obtain a carry permit for a handgun to protect yourself in Maryland, because you first must experience being assaulted. Does anyone know if this is true?

@Paul:

That is 100% true. Unless you are a high-roller who carries "business cash," a licensed security guard HIRED BY AN ARMED SECURITY COMPANY, a police officer, or have a string of death threats (i.e., more than *four*) deemed "credible" by the Maryland State Police, it is impossible to get a pistol carry permit in Maryland.

@tonya brown
Im glad stupidity isn't contagious. I can also tell how uneducated you are by your post. I hope all 3 of these murders burn in hell.

Ahh Baltimore...the Camden of Maryland. Protip: If you aren't a thug, get out of Baltimore!

That said, my condolences to Ray's friends and family.

The one on the left looks like Namond from The Wire...

How can 3 people kill one person? Even if they all took turns stabbing ray only one delivered the fatal wound, TANYA BROWN!! You have 2 post, one says to convict the killer and let the innocent go free.Then in another post you say you hope all 3 murders burn in hell. That won't bring ray back. Nor will it change anything. The "Killer" should go to jail so that everytime HE can be constantly reminded of what he did. What ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty". Well I see now that that is a bunch of BULL. You are guilty until you prove that you are innocent.

opps my bad Tanya I didn't read that post correctly. So to Josephine well it looks like stupidity IS contagious cause you caught it. Get your facts straight honey. ONE of those men is a murderer!!!!! The other two are not responsible for that man's death, But since this man was a marine and not a thug himself everybody wants all three men to pay for ONE man's actions, How is that justice?

I love the idiot Dave that posted and said to get out of Baltimore - move to another state. Freaking Americans can't even tell the difference between a city and a state.

Justin: True, 8 have died in the last 60 days, however only one was from combat action, as the poster said.

@K-Romulus
Thanks. We looked up the Maryland Carry Handgun Permit application and found the requirements to be unconstitutional and definitely discriminating against poor people. It helps to have a relative with a Doctorate of Law and 4 state bars.
You have to go through hell to beat the devil.

My condolences to all those who knew him. I am hoping one day that people will realize how backwards our gun laws are and help change things. When it comes to handguns, there are only two options.
The first option is to enact strict gun laws that make it impossible for the average, law abiding citizen to carry a handgun in public for self defense. These laws, like all others, will only be followed by the law abiding citizens. This results in the disarming of the law abiding public, which ensures that the only people who are armed are the criminals. Criminals carry guns illegally, and will continue to do so regardless of the law. They use their illegally obtained and carried guns in crimes every day, because they know they are the only ones who are armed. This gives the advantage to the criminals, and makes the law abiding public easy targets for crime. The police can only react to crime that has already been committed. The law abiding public is currently defenseless. Your constituents, whether they take an active role in writing letters or not, are angry about this. ALL of them.

The other option is to allow the law abiding citizens who are able to legally purchase a handgun to carry their handgun in public for self defense. This takes the advantage away from the criminals and changes the law abiding citizen from an easy target to a crime deterrent. Every state that has adopted shall-issue legislation has proven that it significantly reduces crime against the innocent. None have reverted to "wild west lawlessness", and none have since reversed their shall-issue stance.

The choice is easy. Armed, law abiding citizens deter crime by being able to defend themselves and those around them. The vast majority of your constituents believe that Maryland should join the majority of the country and adopt shall-issue legislation. Self defense is a right, not a priviledge.

RIP Brother.
Sadaly another day in Baltimore.

Uhh... shouldn't marines know how to fend off attackers?

I have more FACTS to report.... The media is neglecting to tell the public that this "birthday party" was open to the public for a small fee of $3, yes, anyone could come to that party just as long as they paid their money at the door!!! So to the people, especially the Ray's girlfriend, that's why they were there, but she knows this already. THEY WERE NOT CRASHING HIS PARTY THE PAID TO GET IN!! "B-MORE CAREFULL"

Stop talking crap about a man who was blind sighted by a knife, no one can see the future and know that they are going to die. And the other two men that didn't stab Ray, obviously knew what was going to happen, or they wouldn't have come back with the man with the knife, making them accessories to murder, making them murderers as well, stop making it out to be Ray's fault for being a good man and trying to do the right thing.

Brian I am not trying to down-play what happened. I am just trying to give FACTS about this case since nobody else will. That young man didn't deserve what happened to him AT ALL, neither does his family deserve the pain that they are going through. I think that the man that stabbed and killed him should pay deeply for what he did. The other two WERE NOT accessories. Only the killer left and came back. Get your facts straight before you speak on something you heard on the news. The witnesses will be able to testify to that fact, You'll see, the truth has to come out!!!!

I'm sorry if this post offends you "Sickened" but I was stationed with PFC Ray (He lived a couple doors down from me) and reading your post asking if we Marines are supposed to be able to defend ourselves from attackers, it is true and believe me if I ever run into you I will be more than happy to show you...Ray was at a party, not in a combat zone, therefore he probably wasn't in the frame of mind that leads to bring out the need to defend oneself so please think before you post something like that again, and to everyone here that is protesting that these three men aren't all responsible, please quit while you are ahead because it does not matter if Ray was a Marine or not, they were there, ONE may have done the actual act of maliciously stabbing my fellow Marine, but the other TWO were there with him, they could have done so many different things, I inquire why? what was the motive for violence that ended the life of one of the best people I had the privelage to serve with? In closing, please keep all your negativity and bickering off of this, R.I.P. and Semper Fidelis Ray, you are gone but never forgotten

I miss you dearly...

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
