Mug shots of suspects in number 8 theft

Readers have been asking me for the mug shots of the four men charged with stealing Cal Ripken Jr.'s number 8 statue from Camden Yards. Here they are, from left to right, Matthew Rayner, 20; Gary Parker, 19; Jason Stoneburner, 19; and Patrick Reynolds, 18. Parker is from Southeast Baltimore; the rest are from Essex (mug shots from Baltimore Police Department).

They've all been charged with felony theft and destruction of property in connection with what police describe as a drunken adventure in which they are charged with toppling and stealing the aluminum number 8 statue honoring Ripken in a plaza near the Eutaw Street entrance to the Camden Yards baseball stadium.

They were arrested after driving through the city with the statue in the back of a pickup truck and got caught when they stopped to argue near Patterson Park and someone called police. An officer spotted the number 8 in the back of the truck and arrested them.

As Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III told WBAL-TV: "Don't come to Baltimore to be a moron."

I still don't know motive; the father of one of the suspects told me Wednesday that he didn't even know his son had been arrested until I called. As of this morning, Reynolds had been released from jail on $15,000 bail and Stoneburner was being held in the Baltimore City Detention Center on $8,500 bond. Information on the other two suspects wasn't immediately available.

A court date has been set for District Court on Patapsco Avenue for Oct. 13.

These four goons remind me of a quote from the Sun earlier this week about bank robbers. An FBI agent said (paraphrasing here): "Most of them fall into two groups: the very stupid, and the moderately stupid."

I submit that these guys fall squarely into the former category.

Too funny.

can we just make Essex go away?

One is left to wonder; why is it that Bealefeld will so freely release the mug shots of 4 morons to the press, who did a stupid prank, yet he won't even release the names of police officers involved in shootings, yet alone their pictures? It sounds like Bealefeld takes all of us for morons....or is it just a double standard?
Hey kids...Slip him $300.00 as did Cardin; then it will all simply go away..

You might be a redneck.

WHat about a charge of unerage drinking combined with public drunk and disorderly????

Boy's will be boy's, wow talk about dumb this is one for the books. And I thought alcohol just made ugly people look good. In this case it made 4 young men stupid. I remember when I had my first beer, but it didn't do that to me

"Don't come to Baltimore to be a moron" is a much better slogan than "Get In On It!"

These guys are idiots, not that anyone who can read really needed me to tell them that.

I think for crimes of stupidity like this we should post their pictures more frequently.

A little bit of public humiliation is quite deserved.

ahah. its funny cause i know all of these kids. graduated and still no life.

what I don't understand is the fact that everyone seems to be okay w/the crime of theft in this situation. Whereas, I've read many stories and comments regarding other crimes such as theft and vandalism, destruction of property, etc committed by city residents, yet the comments refer to the people as thugs and coming from broken homes, and having no respect or morals or values. What's up? One of the suspect's father even admitted not knowing his son was even arrested? Please explain the difference?

Herman -

If I was ever caught for half the stupid things I did while young, dumb, and drunk, I would have a very lengthy arrest record.

Luckily, I my pranks never hurt anyone and police officers were more likely to just say, "Go home" at the time.

@herman,
The difference??? These guys are WHITE, so it's okay. C'mon, this is America, you know the deal!

I find it pretty pathetic and sad that the Sun covers this story like it's the crime of the century but still not a word about what took place at a Baltimore ACORN office. Surely you've heard about the story? Why aren't you down there instead of covering this meaningless story? Oh wait. The Sun actually doing a story about an organization with ties to the president and tax payer money only happens if the president or organization is Republican and conservative. Shame on the Baltimore Sun for not covering a REAL story.

While I'm aware it does not compare to the importance of a stolen statue, could someone at your fine paper please report on this crime:

Essex ? Cant they just build a wall around Essex? Do you know why there are so many unwed mothers in Essex? Because you have to be at least 16 to get married in Maryland. Do you know why they built the sewage plant in Essex? They thought no one would notice, and my favorite... Do you know why you can not get a speeding ticket in Essex? Because the police understand you wat to get the hell out of there as fast as possible.

the difference, herman, is that obviously these boys were not in it for the "game" but for fun and giggles. They are a product of their communities and it seems their parents don't even keep track of what lives they are living. I'm guessing none of them graduated with honors, or graduated at all, perhaps, and I'll even go to guess that they will not learn from their mistakes here- that they will remain hoodlums and will probably father a few bastard children on the way, with several women who will find them "dangerous" and sexy for their laughable "criminal" records.

Herman -

These are kids that got drunk, did a stupid prank that didn't harm any individual person but an organization and then continued to drive with it in the back of a pickup around the city begging to get caught. The boys are HS graduates, no criminal records, in their late teens and 20...their parents do not need to know where they are. The difference is the other reports are of actions of kids that commit direct crimes on another person or to their homes, carry weapons (guns, knives etc), have lengthy criminal records and have parents that encourage their activity. I live in an inner city neighborhood and listen/watch as the parents encourage or turn an eye to when their kids steal the neighbors property, deal drugs or beat up another kid. If it was an inner city kid that did this, black, white or brown, was a decent student, never in trouble and pulled this stupid prank I would react the same as I am to this group of 4.

Im from Essex and I turned out ok. Now Im not defending the idiots, but I do find it funny. Guess thats my Essex Pride. Say what you want, but Im sure you all have dumb criminals in your neighborhoods as well.

And Im wondering how many unwed mothers there are in Essex. Jimster? Since you know the stats. I dont think you need to be married to take care of your child. I know many single moms who are doing just fine.

They look like Bealfeld's bodyguards.

Wow its amazing how the city and media turn this into the crime of the century. Don't we have one of the highest murder rates in the country? How many open air drug markets are there? Oh yeah and the whole acorn thing, thats no big deal. They are making a gigantic scene out of this because they have not been able to control the violent crime in the tourist area of the city. They finally caught somebody doing something (by mere coincidence) and now they are going to make an example of them. If they knocked over a concrete statue in someones yard, or stole they're giant Santa and reindeer they would have been let out the next day with no charges. They luckily caught some drunk kids being stupid. Celebrate while you can, spend all your time writing stories on it because while you are, someone else is getting 20 new people hooked on heroin, people are getting robbed and assulted, and its friday so someone is bound to get shot. Keep up the good work.

Can't get a mug shot of murderers, assault perps, sex perp's, fraud pereps, but we can get these goofball's mug shots... Is this deal soooo impiortant we need this exposure> Or maybe it is because there a 'gang' of white boys? Like these guys pose a risk to society? Give me a break....

In America there is always a different standard for Blacks and Whites. These fools are thieves...they committed theft. They are criminals!! And news flash... there are many White criminals...just look at the school killings in Columbine and other places and the serial killers...are they simply pranksters too?? I beg to differ. Criminals come in all colors.

"Don't come to Baltimore to be a moron". The second part of the slogan, of course, should be: "... because we have enough of those here."

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
