Death of teen
With all the talk of youth gangs and violence in and around downtown Baltimore, we can easily forget that the problem is not confined to the city lines. Over the weekend, a 14-year-old Crofton boy was beaten by other teens and left for dead on a suburban road, near his toppled bike.
Sunday night, Anne Arundel County police charged two youths with manslaughter in Christopher David Jones' death -- one, 16-year-old Javel Marqueth George, was charged with manslaughter; another youth was charged as a juvenile.
Police weren't saying anything about motive but I hope court documents that should be available later today will shed some light on the attack and whether it was part of a fight or unprovoked. Police did say that up to seven youths participated, meaning they ganged up on this kid.
We're obviously having problems with youth and gang violence, and not just at the Inner Harbor. Check back here or to the Baltimore Sun for more updates on this case today.

Comments
the big Sunday Sun piece about the Inner Harbor issues surprisingly leaves out the "g" word that you use here. How did they let Justin Fenton write the article, when he has a way of glossing over things in his terminology? Plus, you've been beating the drum about this for weeks...

There has been much speculation if this was gang or race related.
This morning there was a heavy police presence at both high schools and the comments on our site regarding this are very enlightening with comnpassion, condolences, rumor, and speculation.

These attacks by high school students started in the high school with teachers being attacked and nothing done to them. Now they are attacking the local community, yes the police need to do foot patrols. If you cannot walk in your neighborhood it will have taxpayers moving out of the city!

The seven cowardly thugs that beat up on one boy should all be tried as adults along with their parents. Sick animals......

when are parents going to start paying attention to their kids?
Thats the question. Willing to bet some if not all of these kids have been in trouble before.

Hi Pete...
Sounds like a hate crime to me. As race permiates every aspect of this country these days... why is no attention being paid to this case. The elephant in the room is white... and he's getting pissed.

Couldn't agree more with Tom. This sounds and looks like a hate crime to me. Saying it's possibly the work of two gangs. Why haven't we heard from the NAACP? Anne Arundel County is going to be the next P.G. County.

Hello, I'm from Crofton, and actually go to UMD now. A lot of my classmates have brothers and sisters that knew the boy who died. He was expelled for fighting a few months ago. However, the kid was apparently very nice, and a good kid; rather he fought because he was a little nerdy and got bullied a lot. This was a heinous crime, and manslaughter is not enough.

I knew this child. He was not a nerd.
He was a very cool kid who hung out with everyone, black and white. I don't think that the speculation that this was race related is helpful to the community or the family, and I feel quite certain that from knowing him, he would not be pleased with those kinds of rumors circulating around. Please consider what probably would have been his wishes before speculating further.....

Hope you love where you live, keep on tolerating it, don't fight. Just sit and watch TV.
I like the school too, no one there obviously sees this crap going on, more stupid teachers and principals.

Why is there little to no mention that these beatings are overwhelmingly gangs of black thugs assaulting white people? I know that's why the police and polticians don't care. The irony is that as more and more whites are attacked, the more racism will re-emerge in society. Even white liberals get outraged when their kids, wives, daughters, etc. finally become victims. As this generation of yuppies who thought living in the city was 'cool' become more and more vicimized, you'll see another mass exodus of taxpayers leaving the city for the suburbs.

"Concerned", do you have any idea where Crofton is located? It's located at least 20 miles away from DC & Baltimore! Your cluelessness knows no bounds.

"MCG" who cares about the exact location of Crofton? The fact is the "hoodrat blacks" are slumming up and creating violence where they go!!!!!

Please lets not pull the race card. People are people. We have come to far to go back now..What these kids did was absolutely wrong but these kids were friends with all races. So the race is not an issue. We as parents need to be more aware of our kids and pray for them. We have to instill in them right and wrong and just hope and pray that do the right thing. So lets not get confuse and go back to the Willie Lynch days..

I have children that go to Arundel High and there is ALOT of race issues that are not dealt with, just swept under the carpet. My son knew this child, and he was a good kid, a religious kid, a kid with two great parents, is why they moved him out of that school to SAVE him from what they couldnt. Im sorry if this comes off sounding bad. But so many people I have spoke to say the same thing and wonder why its not in the forefront of the media. If the victim was black and beated by a "gang" of whites.
Jessie Jackson would be camped out on the corner and Oprah would be filling in Crofton and NAACP would be all over this story. But because we fear more racial tensions we use our words carefully and whisper behind closed doors. And post blame to gangs. Wake up,, these are kids we were all 14 --> 16 sure we had fights sure we got suspended from school.
But did we stalk a kid alone on a bike in broad daylight and beat the life out of a kid? NO we didnt we had respect we cared about life. This was by far very very racial related and this will not end when the police presence leaves the corners of Crofton. My for sale sign is posted out front and we are moving our children out of PUBLIC schools and go in debt and place them somewhere safe. This is unbelieveable that we can not call this a crime of HATE..... sickens me
