Cops still searching for person who burned dog
I just met with Baltimore Police Officer Syreeta Teel at the very spot on Presbury Street where she came across the burning pit bull last week. The reward is now up to $6,000 -- see my colleague Jill Rosen's blog Unleashed for more updates.
The dog, nicknamed Phoenix, unfortunately had to be euthanized at a Pennsylvania veterinary hospital over the weekend. The officer who responded also owns a pit bull, named Blu, and I'll have more on her story in Wednesday newspaper and on line. At left is a picture she gave me of herself and her dog.
Teel showed up in her squad car to talk me at the scene of the fire. It's street with public housing on one side and a row of vacant, boarded rowhouses on the other. Vacant lots are overgrown with weeds, as are the alleys.
I asked Teel if any witnesses had stepped forward and she laughed. "Of course not," she told me. "There were people standing around but they weren't doing anything."
Anyone with information is urged to call the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter at 410-396-4698.

Comments
i tell you what, if i meet the person who burned this dog i'll sue them for creating the risk of fire in the community. I'd like to teach this kid or whomever a lesson on how it feels to be burned like this dog. I can't stand people who do this, what a sick human being, sick sick sick. A waist of human flesh this person or persons are.

has anyone gone to the seen to offer the reward? If this location is getto, they may not even know what's being offered except for thru others there who will not speak of a reward i'm sure. 6000$ in cash should be displayed in the street to rat this peron out.

Whoever did this to this dog, should have it done to them. I think it's flatout cruel, no animal should have to endure such a horrible thing.

If they find who did it i would gladly dump the gasoline on him and light the match.
Posted by: barb | June 2, 2009 1:37 PM
If you would burn a person, because a person burned a dog, you have the problem. Two wrongs don't make right or even, just stupid. Since when is a dogs life more valuable than a human? Let him that is perfect cast the first stone!
Posted by: SjC | June 2, 2009 1:52 PM
No i have no problem. So what your saying is its just a dog so it dosent matter. Like a psycholgist said on the news a person who would do this to a animal would not have a problem doing it to a person. I would not actually light a person on fire but i would love him/her to experience what the dog experienced!
Posted by: barb | June 2, 2009 2:19 PM
barb,
So can i come burn your dog?
Posted by: Anonymous | June 2, 2009 2:26 PM
barb,
You say a person that could do this to a dog could do this to a human.. funny thing is, this (cruelty) happens everyday to humans. Check the crime log. I LOVE dogs but don't we have some other issues to get with. Only vegetarians can be upset Anyway. What about all the cows, chicken, and fish we slaughter just to consume daily. If you really wanna make a diference, protest in front of a burger joint. Better yet, go to that very neighborhood and start aking people about the crime...

Hope someone comes forth with the information needed to arrest the speck of dirt that did this to "Phoenix"! I agree with anonymous...Can we burn your dog, Barb?
Posted by: Jane | June 2, 2009 3:06 PM
This is a cruel act upon a animal. its not fair they need to have it were a pet owner needs to go through a thrull investagation in order to own a pet....
Posted by: kia | June 2, 2009 3:07 PM
Barb, Can you imagine the pain "Phoenix" experienced with over 90% of her body burned. I can't imagine the pain...just accidently touching a hot dish from the oven and burning my finger is horrible!
Posted by: jane | June 2, 2009 3:10 PM
To SjC: There's a BIG difference between killing an animal for food (necessity) and torturing it for sport. That's just plain sick, and yes -- if you can do it to an animal, then you can probably do it to a human. Torture should get the perp the same punishment, regardless of the victim's species. When that happens, then I'll know our society is finally evolving.

I hope the police find the person responsible so they can give him a medal for preventing a most probable brutal attack on a child. Cant burn enough of these vicious pit bulls!
Posted by: Chas linkowich | June 2, 2009 6:35 PM
I agree with Barb. These people should be burned alive for what they did to this poor animal. Ditto for those that stood around and watched.
Anyone that thinks a person that is capable of this crime would not do this to a person, is a ******* idiot. But then again this is Baltimore..
To this 'people' that do not believe an animals life is as important as a humans, that explains why this stuff happens. I also hope there is a God so you can explain your lack of concern for his creatures to HIM.
I only can hope GOD tells you all to go **** yourself and by the way,
ENJOY HELL!

Nice to see that Baltimore City residents endorse 'Stop Snitching' when it comes to animal cruelty, too. Remember, Michael Vick did things like this to his dogs, and he is considered a victim among many in the black community.

How exactly do you set a dog on fire? Do you use an accelerant? How do you get close enough to a dog with fire to do it anyway? Seems like a lot of interesting questions are unanswered. I don't think it was something as simple as walking up and using a lighter.

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals. Especially for animals who are suffering: for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them, we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

jc, you are full fledged idiot
"since when is an animal's life more valuable than a human's?"
uhhhh, when the "human" we are talking about here, has absolutely no value.
Barb, you go girl. vent away. i'm guessing you, unlike the demons who lit this poor animal on fire, are a rational human being who wouldn't actually harm other being, regardless how wretched and uselss, but are simply expressing the same outrage other decent normal people feel about this horrendous act. don't worry Barb, these social vermin will have to answer to the Highest Power someday. and you can bet your last dime, they will live a miserable festering existence here on earth until that time.
God Bless the Animals. God Bless this poor animal and take her into your Kingdom. Rest peacefully on the rainbow bridge, Phoenix. woof

It's good to know that Baltimore City residents endorse 'Stop Snitching' even when it comes to animal cruelty. Most Baltimore City residents think Michael Vick is a victim, and this is no different than the type of behavior Vick engaged in with dogs. The dog probably deserved it anyway....he may dissed' the person or stepped on his foot by accident.

To Barb,
First of all, you can also do some research of your own. 7 out of 10 people who commit violent crimes actually started off by committing violent crimes against animals when they are children.
Second, just because we have evolved to a degree above other living creatures (and there are a lot of people that cannot even say that) does not give us the privilege/right to treat any other creature with such violence. We are destructive, selfish creatures that have know idea (and most of the time don't care) how destructive we are. We move to the country, building our homes in the woods (taking away the natural habitat of the wild animals that have lived there for years) and then want to poison them because they are eating our plants to survive. Get a grip on reality Barb, this was a very vile act and this person should pay for what he/she has done.
Your statement about "Only vegetarians have the right to be upset," is absolutely foolish. Yes, it would be a wonderful world if we all became vegetarians, but that just is not going to happen. Anyone has the right to be upset and those that are upset are very compassionate people who have big hearts, I applaud you all.
And one more thing, it is not "Let him that is perfect cast the first stone!" The Gospel of John has many interpretations, but the most popular is "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
One should really do their research before posting anything on the Internet.

I rescued a "Pit"(American Staffordshire Terrier) from a dog fighting operation and he became a very loving creature who was friendly to everyone he met. They are wonderful dogs if given a lot of love.
It would take a person who has a mental impairment to abuse any creature to this degree. I hope they catch the person who did this and provide them some institutional mental treatment.

doing to change it?
My concern- when you see animals that are abused, stray, neglected- do YOU speak up, offer a hand, call for help? Or do YOU say it's not your business?
Do YOU respect animals? Are YOU teaching others to? How are YOU impacting this problem?
It's not all "THEM" committing these atrocities. We can all make sure that this happens less. Because know that animals are being shot, burned, tortured, and neglected every day and we often look the other way when we see the signs. Get involved- it's not just money that's needed. It's YOU.

Hmmm.why is everyone attacking Barb....don't really think she said anything out of line....i.e.
"No i have no problem. So what your saying is its just a dog so it dosent matter. Like a psycholgist said on the news a person who would do this to a animal would not have a problem doing it to a person. I would not actually light a person on fire but i would love him/her to experience what the dog experienced"
Seems to me like you are attacking those that are attacking her statement which was in response to Sjc's...so read the comments next time and attack the right person!
And to you Chas linkowich all dogs, including Pit Bulls, can be cruel but they are not born that way it is how they are raised and treated by their owners and the ones who turn vicous are the ones who have owners probably like that of this dog and are beaten and brutalized so that is all they know. My friend has a pit bull and it is the biggest baby I have ever seen and would never hurt a fly. By the way the Saint Bernard is known to be the most vicious dog and I don't recall anyone making a big deal about this dog being used around children in "Beethoven."

to the person who asked how the dog was set on fire: she was doused in
gasoline, and then lit. :(

Ok, people you're missing the point. An animal can't reason like a person - an animal TRUSTS, which is something most people have learned not to do. A poor defenseless trusting animal can't possibly know or understand the hatred and violence of humanity. Rest in peace, dear Phoenix. Noone can hurt you now.

There are more caring posts, than the flaming creeps, attacking Barb. Hey Anonymous; you're a coward who wants to burn Barbs' dog. Do us a favor & if you're too stupid, or abuse pets, we'd all love it if you don't post again! Baltimore has the highest crime rate in the US. & I
think there is gangs behind this. You have to hide behind each other! This will never stop in Md., as the crime slime, beats up, & kills: pets, seniors,
kids, & witnesses. You know who you are, & I hate you, but, you're too stupid to read! All living beings are created equal, except for the punks!!
May you Rest In Peace, Sweet Baby
Girl, Phoenix!! You didn't deserve it. I believe in an eye for an eye. Thank you Officer Teel, & all who helped, & Donated $$. I pray that none of you suffer with PTSD. GOD, Please, bring justice for this KIND PUPPY!!!!!!!

To Chas linkowich
Are you so small minded and uneducated to make a statement about Pit Bulls attacking children?
Yes, Animals as well as humans attack, the subjects that will make the most money for the media get posted and are newsworthy-Pit Bulls do not have the highest rate of bite incidents, to date statistics show, never have. Please educate yourself on the facts and not just what you see or read in the news.
I own a Pit bull and she is a gentle, kind creature. Its funny, quite a few pit bull incidents occurred from idiot parents who put there children in danger while unattended-just like an unattended child could fall down the stairs-so should we say the stairs are evil too-just plain funny. Maybe there should be lessons on "breeding" children properly before condemning anyone or anything else!

These were not "people" who did this they had no heart no soul therefore, not a human Who ever did this to this dog will burn in hell if he/she does not ask for forgiveness and turn their lives around and make a difference in the lives of abused animals.
Posted by: Teresa B. | June 7, 2009 1:30 AM
There simply is NO EXCUSE FOR ANIMAL ABUSE! To that poor dog that had to endure such a horrific event, RIP. People have choices, animals don't. To those coward beings that are missing their compassion and sensitivity chip, you need to be permanently taken out of society, because you have not earned the privilege to live amongst others. The only comfort I find in all this is that you reap what you sow. Or for those that do not understand, what goes around comes around. I am confident that you will get what you deserve.
