Woman stabbed outside courthouse dies

Veronica Williams, the wife of an East Baltimore community association president, has died from injuries that police say were inflicted by her husband earlier this week. The Greater Greenmount Community Association issued a statement a few minutes ago, and city police spokesman Donny Moses confirmed the death.

Moses said the 29-year-old woman died at Johns Hopkins Hospital at 9 last night.

Williams was stabbed repeatedly Monday afternoon on East North Avenue near the Eastside District Courthouse. A Baltimore police officer who was driving by saw the assault, and authorities said he first tried to use a Taser on the man, and then shot him.

Cleaven Williams, 33, remains at Johns Hopkins Hospital recovering from bullet wounds. Moses said charges could now included murder. Mr. Williams headed the Greater Greenmount Community Association and led several neighborhood walks with police officials, including the major who commands the Eastern District.

The following is a statement from the Greater Greenmount Community Association:

Today Veronica Williams died of the injuries she sustained in the altercation stemming from a domestic dispute with her husband, CJ, on Monday at the corner of North Ave and Harford Rd. Our heart is heavy with this news and our thoughts and prayers go out to Veronica and CJ's three children and other family members. This is a personal tragedy and a tragedy for our community.

I am very very said to hear this. Ihave been reading about this story. I knew about the family problems because CJ did business with an associate.

I could not sleep well thinking about the lost of a life and the distruction of the childrens well being to have their mother. And one dy finding out the it was their father that cause their mother not to be hear.

This is a situation where the law must been fullfilled to it's fullest. I regret that it happen. I pray to God that we learn to love and let love live. Stop all voilence and learn to talk o eachother.

My condulences to the family of the victim, this is a very sad situation for the grieving family and the children.

I knew Veronica from working in the hair salon in Frederick MD. I was so deeply hurt to hear that something like this happen to her because she was such a loving person. My thoughts and prayers go out to her children and family.

Veronica was a very sweet person. I knew her from the shop as well. My heart hurts. My prayers go out to her children and family

To my friend, and also a sister.I knew her from the shop. She was a creative and very sweet person.Although gone, but not forgotten. My prayers go out to the children and family.

I knew them both. CJ is a coward. He was always fighting her but, never a man. He was more concerned with the community than his own family. He was always trying to control her. She was a beautiful sweet person with a good heart and a good mother to her children. Her family came first.

Veronica was a very loving person it really hurts me to know that someone as kind as her had to go thru this... Veronica won't be forgotten..... if anybody has additional info on her burial or just any information please reply..

My deepest condolences go out to the family... Does any one have funeral arrangements, if so pls post them? Thank you.

funeral service is tuesday dec 2 in dunn nc

My heart goes out to all who knew and loved Veronica, you all are in my prayers as well as her children. I didn't really know Veronica well and only did from visiting another Stylist at the shop, but I enjoyed her jokes and riddles. From what I did know she was not only a beautiful person on the outside but inside as well. God Bless you Veronica, Rest in Peace.

I had no idea of this until tonight. I am deeply hurt. I can't stop crying. I love Veronica. She did my hair for a couple of years. She was a great person. I will never forget her. God Bless her Kids and Family. I love ya Veronica.

Veronica was a loved, respected, and peaceful soul that I am very thankful and proud to say I knew. My prayers go out to her children and her family. This is a selfish, horrible injustice

It has been over a year and still it seems like a nightmare. Veronica was my niece and I doubt you could find a more loving and giving person. The worst possible thing that could happen in a woman's life is to meet and marry someone so utterly evil. Because it takes a great deal of evil in the soul to commit such a horrific crime. We are still waiting for justice. Delays and more delays. The wheels turn slow, but I am confident he will receive exactly what he deserves.

Our family contiues to weep for Veronica. It has been over a year and justice has yet to take a stand. The court system continuously allows this case to get pushed back as it does so many. In turn, we have no closure. From behind bars CJ has been trying to gain custody of the children. It's obvious that he has no conscious to stalk and stab the mother of his children in the street in broad daylight like an animal. But to try and take the children from their safe haven and make them face their mother's murderer is almost inhumane. He has been a threat verbally and physically right in the courthouse. He's a very violent man. Yet this was the man that certain ones in the community looked up to as a leader "against violence!" This family will continue to pray that justice stand up. Therefore giving us as well a the children some closure so we can finally began to heal.

GOD'S WORD SAY'S DO NOT KILL. CJ KILLED HIS WIFE WITH A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICE AS A WITNESS. IT ONLY TOOK HIM A FEW SECONDS TO DO THE CRIME, WHY IT A LIFETIME TO ALLOW JUSTICE TO PREVAIL. IT IS TIME FOR VERONICA'S FAMILY TO HAVE CLOSURE

This is so crazy. He alledges she did harm to him, yet that was cowardess for a husband to take away his children mother over what? If you can not get along then leave and still maintain your fatherly duties. Some men feel as though they are their for the children, but if it is over then move on. Now the children have neither and he wants custody, how dare him. He is going away for a long time for such a hannous crime and deserves it. I feel for the family.

About Peter Hermann
Peter Hermann started covering news for The Baltimore Sun in 1990, first in Anne Arundel County and, starting in 1994, reporting on the Baltimore Police Department. In 2001, he was assigned to Jerusalem as the Baltimore Sun's Middle East correspondent. He returned in 2005 as an assistant city editor overseeing crime coverage. In 2008, Peter returned to the beat as a daily reporter and blogger. A recent BBC report featured him in a segment on the harsh realities of covering crime in Baltimore.

Coverage will focus on crime trends, problems in neighborhoods in the city and elsewhere, profiles of victims and police officers and try to offer readers a fresh perspective on one of the most vexing issues facing Baltimore and its future.

Contributing to this blog is Justin Fenton, who joined The Sun in 2005 and has covered the Baltimore City Police Department and the criminal justice system since 2008. His work includes an investigation into Cal Ripken Jr.’s minor league baseball stadium deal with his hometown of Aberdeen, a three-part series chronicling a ruthless con woman, coverage of the killing of five Amish children at a schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., and a job swap with a British crime reporter to explore differences in crime-fighting. A special report looking into how city police handle rape cases led to sweeping reforms that changed the way sexual assaults are investigated in Baltimore. He was recognized as the best reporter in Baltimore by the City Paper in 2010 and by Baltimore Magazine in 2011.
