Caption Call Recap: Week of June 23

Thanks for a funny week of clever captions, everyone. Without further delay, here are the week's best. Feel free to chime in if you think we missed the boat and want to nominate the best.

guy in a bird helmet

First off, when did helmets like this come into vogue? Apparently, the Spanish birdkeeper in this Getty Images photo wants to start a new trend.

Exhibit A: Bill's pickup technique in the later charge of transporting young gulls across state lines.
Submitted by Anonymous (I wish they would have put their name to receive credit they deserve)

 fighting seagulls

There were some real gems for this AP photo of seagulls duking it out at a Wyoming landfill. And thanks to edmund for keeping alive the methane jokes that have dominated other captions.

E-Harmony failed to mention THIS side of her personality. Submitted by Chuxter98

pig faced protesters

These big piggies in this Getty Images photo are actually environmental activists in the Netherlands protesting a hog farm. Creative but creepy way to attract attention.

Do these hats make us look weird?

elderly fencing lessonSo many fabulous captions on this Getty Images photo of a fencing lesson at an Australian retirement community. They were so good, we're going to call out two captioners for excellence.

Do you feel lucky today, punk? Or do you want to rethink canceling bingo? Submitted by Ann Marie

The feline in this Getty Images photo is actually the stationmaster of a Japanese train station. I wonder if she gets paid in catnip?

Caption Call Recap: Week of June 16

Caption Call's second week has yielded some really funny captions. Thanks to everyone who participated.

So many possibilities with this really weird AP photo of a South Korean protest against genetically modified corn.

An exhausted runner takes a quick breather during the Orville Redenbacher 5k. Submitted by CW

And an honorable mention to reward the research this one probably took: Chan-wook Park, who had a hit with "Oldboy", failed to follow through with his next movie, "Cornboy." Submitted by Jim

The caption winner for this Getty Images photo of John McCain on the campaign trail gets bonus points for playing off news of wife Cindy McCain's extravagant credit card bill.

It's always really fun to imagine what animals would be saying if they could talk, but the captions on this AP photo were priceless (and not too sparing on the Flipper and Lassie references).

Check back each weekday for another photo to caption and next Monday for a recap. Maybe next week your caption will be picked as the funniest and you'll get a little slice of Internet fame.

Caption Call Recap: Week of June 9

Thanks for helping make Caption Call's first week so full of participation and funny. As promised, here's a recap of what we've selected as the week's most clever captions. Browse the other entries to see what may not have made the cut.

President Bush

While there were many entries about flatulence, kisses and duck faces, this caption is great for this AP photo of President Bush at the U.S. Air Force Academy graduation:

"While Al Gore was inventing the internet, I was inventing more important things like the human beat box."
Submitted by Kevin Richardson

Gandhi kid

You'd never guess it, but this Getty Images photo was taken at an anti-tobacco awareness campaign in India.

"Where's My hat Ma?"
Submitted by Phyllis Reinhard

Hillary Clinton at Washington, D.C. campaign rally

Former presidential contender Hillary Clinton flashed a surprisingly upbeat mug in this Getty Images photo the day she announced she was suspending her campaign.

"Because presidential nominee candidates can only be in one place at a time, hundreds of cardboard cutouts are sent around the country in place of the actual candidates. Unfortunately, the 'Excited Hillary' was accidentally shipped to the location of her concession speech. "
Submitted by Sibyl

Superman at a gas station pump

Again, this Getty Images photo of a protester at a Los Angeles gas station drew lots of flatulence jokes, along with some Elvis comparisons.

"Will catch criminals for gas"
Submitted by Marleen May

 Sumo wrestlers

No word on who won this exhibition before the start of the Grand Sumo Tournament in Los Angeles. (AP photo)

"Sumo school entrance exam: seems like these kids are getting younger every year."
Submitted by AKS

Thanks to everyone who played. Check back each weekday for another photo to caption and next Monday for a recap.

Welcome to Caption Call

The cliche goes like this: A picture's worth a thousand words. But most of the time, the best words are the funny ones you come up with yourself when you look at a picture. The images may not be intended to make you laugh, but a little creativity can go a long way.

Welcome to Caption Call, a new feature here at baltimoresun.com where you can share those caption quips with our Web readers.

Here's how it works: Each weekday, we'll post a new photo. Mull it over, come up with something clever and then use the handy "Post a Comment" function at the bottom of the post. Keep it humorous, but also keep it clean. Imagine that the people in the photo had a speech bubble over their head -- what would they be saying or thinking?

The most clever and humorous captions will be pulled out and reposted with your user name in our weekly recap. See, it's a chance for you to get a little bit of Web celebrity or at least compete with your friends.

If you need some inspiration, check out the "Most Recent Comments" section to the right and see if you can top them. The great experiment that is Caption Call won't work unless you contribute. Submit your captions no matter how silly you think they are -- that's the point!

Check out our first entry -- this picture of President Bush -- and keep the captions coming.
