Gossip Girl Podcast: "Valley Girls"

Listen Now

We were loving the 80s flashback portion of Gossip Girl this week -- it makes us hope that Lily gets picked up by the network. Great characters, fantastic music, and oh, the clothes! Unfortunately, the flashback part overshadowed the present-day events -- including the prom!

Oh, yeah, prom happened
Lily's decision to send Serena to jail reminds her of her own time in the pokey, which is why we got the luscious, candy-colored flashback, complete with neon clothing and utterly fabulous music. We like young Lily -- and all the rest of the 80s cast. Yes, even Andrew McCarthy (Sorry, Janine!)

Meanwhile, our present-day protagonists are preparing for prom -- which Blair has been dreaming about her whole life. She even has a scrapbook! At first, it looks like things are going horribly wrong -- her dress gets ruined, her corsage is mangled, all the hotel rooms are booked -- but all turns out well. Almost too well. And when the Headband Brigade tries to crush her spirit by stuffing the prom queen ballot box for Nelly Yuki, we find out why -- Chuck is orchestrating the whole thing! He wants to give Blair the perfect evening -- even though he won't admit he's doing it. Sigh. But that's ok -- Blair ends up breaking up with Nate because... well, because. Meanwhile, Dan bails out Blair, and present-day Lily spends far too much time on our TV screens.

Mia and I ponder the schizophrenic character of the episode, speculate about past and future fashion trends, and contemplate what the spin-off would be like. Plus, we ponder who would make a good vampire, make Jettie Mae happy, speculate on the Van Der Woodsen guy, and mourn the lack of a certain character who would have really made prom interesting!

Brittany Snow was awesome and she's hot. I kinda prefer Andrew Mccarthy to br in Lipstick Jungle.

Yay Kryten Ritter good to see her back and Ryan Hansen.

Brittany Snow doing her mug shot thing was just awesome and funny.

I'm kinda torn between liking Dan taking Serena or not liking it because it was kinda romantic.

This night was mean't to be Chuck and Blair's night and everyone knows it. Serena is starting to think it too.

I was expecting Georgina
and poppy to be in this episode.

The whole Lily hugging situation kinda reminds me of Brooke and Victoria Davis.

Matt Barr is awesome I thought he would be the Van Der Woodsen she marries. He was kinda awesome back in One Tree Hill.

I am really hoping that the show does get picked up.

awesome podcast as always

The episode was one of the BEST gossip girl episodes aired so far. The fashion and music were great also! I really hope that CW decides to pick it up!

I just wanted to add that the guy who played Van Der Woodson was Psycho Derek on One Tree Hill, and he looked completely better! Psycho Derek had to have a screwed-up face the entire time! I agree with you on all points.

Agree that the "Lily" spin off looks really good. Loved the flashbacks as well since I too was in high school in the 80's.
To be honest, the amount they had of the prom was enough. How many more times do I need Nate to have his running convo. with Chuck about staying away from Blair, or Serena and Dan talking about if they should or shouldn't be together, blah, blah blah.
They got to the good parts of the prom and though you may have thought it was weird, I enjoyed Chuck doing all the stuff for Blair. He loves her, yay!
Can not WAIT till next week!
