Weekly walking/running roundup

What I’m doing: I'll be going down to watch the National Marathon on Saturday, then probably doing some makeup mileage on Sunday.

Why: I've never seen this relatively new race -- this will be its sixth year -- and while it's not as big as autumn's Marine Corps Marathon, I respect the ambition that it takes to call yourself the National Anything right out of the gate.

What else I recommend: The Keep Your Colon Rollin 5K gets 10 points just for its name. I know nothing else about this race. I'm also curious about the Great Escape 5K in Cumberland (both links after the jump).

Other options:

Weekday offerings - BRRC Group runs at Goucher, ESRC daily runs, PGRC weekday runs at National Harbor, PGRC weekday runs in Bowie
, Rockville All-Comers Group Fun Run, Glen Burnie daily walking program, Open track workouts, Gaithersburg fun runs/walks

Saturday - OHS Bear Crawl 5K Run / Walk, Cumberland Great Escape 5K, Frederick Cookie Fun 5K run and walk, Bowie Spring 5K Race and 2 Mile Walk, Rec Deeds Challenge Run 5K and Fun Walk, NCR Trail Snails Saturday training runs, American Red Cross “Out for Blood” Columia 5k Run/1 mile Walk, Maxwell Hall Park 4M, Mind, Body & Soul Woodstock 5k, Gaithersburg WildFire Adventures 5k Mud Challange & Scavenger Hunt, Keep Your Colon Rollin' 5K

Sunday - BRRC GPS White Hall 15K, WRRC Sunday training runs at McDaniel College, In Training Baltimore runs, RASAC Friends 4.35 Miler, First Time Triathlete Workshop, Champion System Team Challenge

This will be my 3rd year in a row doing the Nat'l 1/2. The start and finish isn't all that great for spectators. Probably the best place to view it is along Conn. Ave near Dupont Circle. There's usually a guy playing the tuba right where the course takes you beneath the circle. Watching on Columbia Rd @ Mintwood near the Fleet Feet store is a good spot too. Enjoy.

This past weekend I did the Shamrock Virginia Beach Half Marathon. My stepdaughter was running her first half, so I stayed back with her and helped her keep from starting too fast. She did the second half faster than the first and finished in 2:47:30. I was proud of her! It's a well run race, the only questionable part being a stretch around miles 10-12 where the half marathoners heading south share the road with the full marathoners going north, and there's not much room to pass slower runners. Lots of good stuff at the finish.

This weekend I'm running the National Marathon for the first time. I ran my first half marathon in Baltimore in 2008, and afterwards noticed that my time wasn't sufficient to qualify for the National Marathon. That, of course, prompted me to get my times faster. All of my halfs since then have met the National Marathon's qualifying standards.

My first full marathon was in Baltimore this past October. I only finished in 5:17:15, but I managed negative splits and was running strong at the end. I didn't hit the wall, although my feet hurt from mile 20 on. I'm kind of hoping to break 5:00:00 at the National, but I'm not sure that's realistic. Nonetheless, I'll enjoy seeing parts of DC I've never seen. Cities are much more interesting on foot.

About Exercists
Andrea Siegel, a reporter at The Baltimore Sun, covers mostly crime and courts in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County, as well as legal issues. She wishes she was more physically fit, and, as she's more fond of chocolate than exercise, fitness is a challenge. Her partner on a one-mile-plus daily walk is the family dog, a mixed breed named Moxie, and she exercises at the gym where the D.C. snipers once worked out.
Jerry Jackson has been a photo editor at The Baltimore Sun for 14 years and an avid cyclist for more than 30 years. Inspired by the movie "Breaking Away," he started racing as a teenager in Mississippi when leather "brain baskets" were still the norm. He regularly commutes to work by bike and still enters several mountain bike races a year for fun.

Patrick Maynard, who will be writing about running and walking, has been a producer for baltimoresun.com since 2008. In 2009, he tweeted on-course for the Sun from the Baltimore Marathon, finishing in just under 4 hours and almost managing to run the whole time. He sometimes walks to the Sun offices on Calvert Street.

Leeann Adams, a multimedia editor at The Baltimore Sun, also dabbles in content for the mobile website and iPhone app and covers the Ravens via video. She did a triathlon to celebrate her 40th birthday and continues to swim, bike and run -- none of them quickly, though. Her biggest fitness challenge is to balance working, working out, spending time with her husband and being a mom to a 6-year-old boy.

Anica Butler, the Sun's crime editor, is a former high school runner and recovering vegetarian who spent more of her early-adult years on a bar stool than working out. She is currently training (though poorly) for a half marathon and is trying to live a generally healthier lifestyle. She also hates the gym.
