Has anyone tried the HCG diet?

I can't seem to escape the HCG diet today. "Good Morning America" did a segment on it this morning, and I stumbled upon The New York Times article on its resurgent popularity.

For those who don't know, the HCG diet involves injections of a pregnancy hormone and limiting yourself to 500 calories a day. The hormone supposedly helps metabolize stored fat. However, both stories note the FDA warnings that it doesn't cause weight loss, and the diet has many other skeptics. Harvard medical professor Pieter Cohen told The Times that the plan was “manipulating people to give them the sense that they’re receiving something that’s powerful and potent and effective, and in fact they’re receiving something that’s nothing better than a placebo.”

So are there any readers who are believers or skeptics? Talk about it in the comments.

I did the HCG Diet for 42 days and lost 47 lbs when it was all over. I used the Drops not the injections, and i have kept it off for 1 year

I have lost 60+ pounds on the HCG Diet the only problems that I have encountered is that I don't like fish or shrimp so I am burned out on Chicken my first round I lost 36 pounds in 40 days my second round I lost 24 I am on my third and final round so far I have gone from 215 to 146 and I have not exercised the first day in fact they reccomend that you don't exercise because of the low caloric intake.

@Cindy
If you were indeed using "drops" and taking them orally, you were destroying any HCG that may have been in the dose. The reason that HCG and indeed, most protein based hormones (strings of amino acids) are injected and not given orally is that stomach acids and enzymes which are intended to break down proteins and would totally destroy the hormones before they are absorbed. If you lost weight, it was due to the extreme low calorie intake. Good for you - but don't delude yourself that HCG had anything to do with it. Your own stomach destroyed any HCG that you took before it could be absorbed. Too bad, it was probably really expensive for the drops.

I do daily HCG injections and my first "long" round (43 days) I lost 40 pounds, even with me cheating every couple days. I just started my second round a week ago Monday and am down 10 pounds in 10 days.
I am 66 yrs old and think I have tried every diet out there (short of going under the knife) and the HCG is the only one that has gotten the weight off fast and kept it off.

@Cindy
Additionally, even if the drops were left under the tongue for supposed direct absorption, HCG is too big of a molecule to get into the blood stream using sublingual methods.

I lost 27 pounds in 23 days, then another 10lbs in 5 days. It works, no doubt about it!! HOWEVER, people need to stay away from drops and nasal sprays which are considered homeopathic and illegal according to the FDA. That's because they only contain trace amounts of hcg and may not be produced in the US. Stick with physician prescribed injections, do not cheat, and watch the weight fall off. It's really a miracle!

I am on the HCG diet right now and after 2 weeks I have lost about 15 pounds but my body fat has not decreased. Same goes for my girlfriend who is also on it. We have both been very strict but the weight we have lost hasn't been fat. Dont just weigh yourself, check your bf %

This might be a silly question, but could it just be that restricting your diet to 500 calories might contribute to the weight loss rather than the HCG?

I lost 22 pounds in 6 weeks and have kept it off for over a year. I did the drops for the first 3 weeks and the shots for the next 3 week round. I do think I felt more hungry and deprived on the drops.....but both worked! I'm a believer!

I am currently on the HCG diet as are 2 good friends. We are all losing at incredible rates. We are doing the injections. Yes, restricting a caloric intake to 500 certainly contributes, but the HCG helps in that I don't feel hungry, I don't feel cheated out of some 700 calories I am missing out on daily. Like others I have tried many plans, including going under the knife, which I did not keep off- I'm estatic to find this plan and love the way it works on me. Naysayers have probably never had to worry about obesity and probably think there are easier ways, but from someone that has tried them all this has been the most successful!

can anyone tell me how to get this hgc diet in Maryland. which one is better the drops or the injections.

I did hcginjections for 30 days and lost 26 pounds. Most recently started the drops and have continued to lose weight though didnt follow the diet exact. The inches are even more impressive than the pounds. To me this is the best "diet" I have ever found.

Are there any peer-reviewed published papers on this diet?

I have done this diet twice and had good results. 25 lbs and then 15 lbs. The hunger was minimal and the energy was amazing. I do not now why everyone seems to want to pan this diet. It is strict but works like nothing I have ever tried. The ability to loose weight quickly spurs you to stay on the diet.

Being obese is a greater health hazard than doing this diet. It is not a diet for a few pounds to loose. It is for those who cannot lose on traditional diets and are about to give up and just be fat. Hormones and leptin resistance and other problems make it difficult for some women to loose. Why the networks won't look into this with a more investigative reporting approach, I do not understand.

This works and needs to be researched by someone other than medical personnel that just want to pan it. Too many people that I know have done this with great results. (I did use the injections rather than the drops.)

I have tried almost everything out there and nothing work for me. Even the 1200 cal a day diabetic diet did not work. I just got tired and sick. I did the hcg drops and lost 20 lbs on the first run and as soon as i can i will be doing it again. I felt great and had more energy than I have had in 30 yrs. Just reducing calories did not work for me. HCG is not easy but its worth it.

I have been on the homeopathic drops 1 week and lost 10 lbs. yeah. I am so happy. I can't believe it when I step on the scale. I was a skeptic in the beginning b/c I bought the homeopathic and didnt realize there were only trace amounts of hcg, but decided to try it to see if would really work. I don't feel hungry and the 500 calories keeps me full. I feel like I am eating healthier. Protein vegetables fruit and water. My coworker also took the drops for one week and lost 10lbs.

They did a whole analysis of it on the Dr. Oz show (www.doctoroz.com) and their opinion was that it is potentially dangerous for many reasons. Also, the injections have the active ingredient only, not the drops (which have NO active ingredient at all and are a scam). Basically, the drops are a placebo pill. Check out Dr. oz website and type in HGC diet. It will still have the entire video segment they did.
