Update: Miley Cyrus celebrates birthday with salvia

Five days after her 18th birthday, superstar Miley Cyrus was caught on video taking a hit from a bong. But she says she was smoking salvia and not marijuana.

That’s a hallucinogenic drug made from a plant in the mint family and it’s legal in many states, including California where the video was taken of Cyrus.

The video, reported by TMZ, shows her giggling.

I’m working on a story about salvia (stay tuned for that) because some Johns Hopkins scientists are trying to understand how the unique drug works in hopes that eventually it can be used as a non-addictive pain killer, or used to treat addiction or brain diseases.

They say in the lab it appears not to be harmful to humans, but they are not recommending its use. it can get you into trouble.

Users say it’s kind of an anti-marijuana and won’t get you high. It can make you lose touch with reality for up to 20 minutes and become deeply introspective. It’s been used by Mexican shaman for centuries for spiritual healing.

One Hopkins scientist said the Cyrus' response looked more like salvia than cannabis to him, from the effects, reactions and expectations of onlookers to the manner of smoking ("instigation to take one very large hit and experiencing effects rather than more casual ongoing smoking typical of cannabis.")

Any users out there want to weigh in on salvia's effects?

She's stepped across the line. Salvia or pot, what's the difference both are used to induce an altered state of reality. Lindsey might be out of the spot light!

Children, money and Hollywood - a horrific combination.

See ya in the gutter Miley....

I've smoked salvia on a few occasions and i can tell you that the experience varies hugely on the amount inhaled and the concentration of the plant matter being smoked. The size of the hit that she took looks to be VERY minimal and i can actually bet that her giggling reaction was the result of a mild salvia high, A small dose like that may leave you feeling slightly tingly, and have VERY mild hallucinations ( colors and focus may be slightly distorted but you will not see any leprechauns) On the other side of the spectrum a big dose of salvia can be HORRIFYING. Complete loss of reality, time, self awareness, orientation, and rational thought. The last time i did it was a 30x concentrate from a large bong. After the hit i felt like anything that wasn't in my peripheral vision was being sucked into a dimension of darkness in which i could not recover. Concurrently with these thoughts ( and sensation i will add) i was getting more and more tunnel vision making the pre-mentioned feelings increase more. it had to ask a friend in the room to hold my hand ( no homo ) and sit me in a chair, Holding his hand was keeping me from slipping into the parallel dimension and sitting on the chair was confirming that i could feel something tangible in the real world and the things outside my peripheral were indeed still intact in real life. This lasted for about 15 min , then i came out of it okay :)

I've used salvia many times, and giggles are something you do see from it. More often than not, you have closed eye hallucinatory images, sometimes shifting of real objects when you open your eyes (like the walls & surfaces melting and twisting).

You often feel a presence of something spiritual around, which is why the plant is also called "Ska Maria Pastora", a reference to the Virgin Mary. Very, very apt, in my experience.

Slate.com recently had a great article and some resources for Journalists writing about drugs and "A free pamphlet about illicit pharmaceuticals that every reporter should download."

If if grows in the ground, legalize it.

Salvia can and often does induce uncontrollable giggling. Speaking from experience, I don't think there's any reason to doubt her claim that she was smoking salvia, not marijuana.

My experience with smoking Salvia was not a giggly one in fact I will never smoke it again. Honestly I did not blieve that anything that you could pick up legally from a gas station or smoke shop would affect you in the way this can. I will say like the other comment posted by Doug it does depend which dosage you get you can buy it up to 80X i believe and of course thats what I did Purple sticky Salvia there was a purple spiral on the lid and it only took 1 hit from a bong and I was completely detached from reality the first thing I noticed I was the room spinning into a spiral than got attached to the walls by purple elastic bands my eyes were open but saw nothing that was in front of me I too asked for my brother to hold my hand I was so scared I saw nothing for about 5min but it felt like forever all i kept saying was please let me go home I honestly did not think I was coming back but once I did my hands were very clamy I stayed with a high feeling for a while and though when I did it I found nothing ammusing about it other found me halarious as I did them too Im just surprised its legal because you actually cannot function off of it at all god forbid anyone try it while driving like some idiots would.

marijuana definitely doesn't do that to you...
salvia gave me massive case of giggles

i know from experience of both drugs

No one ends up in the gutter from salvia or marijuana. It is safer than beer.

in my opinion any substance who causes a change in behaviour and personality and distorting the reality
should not be legalized and people effected should seek help......
i am 72 years of age now ...tried alcohol....tried cannabis......and find out that nothing is better and safer than to be real

Sweet baby girl...stop hanging with foolish people. Remember who your first love is..You are loved precious child.

Used an old fashioned corn cob pipe filled to the rim. Took small hit. Could feel something happening, but not much. Took deeper hit....

FLASH. Fell through a series of realities (vidid dreams). Convinced myself each one was real before it to faded to the next. Finally sitting in my apartment, looking around for signs of change.

I found no insight into my self or the universe as one might with other entheogens. Salvia holds no interest for me.

Salvia seems very dangerous, as it apparently leaves you permanently unable to properly use punctuation.

I don't get it. What's the big deal? She smoked a plant, she didn't kill anybody and she didn't do any hard or illegal drugs. Shame on the media, what is this, Saudi Arabia??

It surely could be a minimal dose of salvia. After plenty of experience with both, I can honestly say that salvia is much, much worse than marijuana in terms of effects, despite its legality.

Meredith, in your blog, you say, "she says she was smoking salvia and not marijuana." However, unless Ms. Cyrus spoke directly to you, which you do not cite, you are wrong. She has not spoken to anyone in the media about this video. TMZ reported that an unnamed "source close to Cyrus" claimed it was salvia she was smoking. Comparing the reactions in the video, I think there's little doubt that it was salvia though. I just wanted to bring to your attention that fact that it was not Cyrus that said she was smoking salvia, but someone else.

Well, looks like we'll have a good corn harvest next summer.

I agree. Absolutely terrifying experience that seemed to last an eternity.

I smoked salvia a few weeks ago after my girlfriend bought it off the web. The stuff is fairly expensive. If you are going to try salvia do not drink at the same time. Alcohol will make he experience unpleasent.

If she was smoking salvia, who cares. it seemed to be her first time. i don't smoke but something with my friends and i'm hyper i'm like that. if its legal, let it go.

I've smoked salvia on a number of occasions and can say that the effects seem to have great variance depending on the potency of the drug. Smoke shops in my own state sell extracted forms of the drug that claim to be be anywhere from 10 to 50 times more potent than the plant.

Less potent forms made me laugh uncontrollably but one the two times I smoked the stuff said to be 30 times stronger than the actual plant I had frightening hallucinations and lost touch with reality in a way I can only describe as blacking out. These experience were bad enough that I lost interest in the drug but hope that doctors can find a responsible and beneficial use for it.

you people are all stupied who would ever take drugs it is illgle and u will get caught by police not in a million years would i take that !!!!

I just don't see why anyone does this stuff. I tried marijuana one time when I was a kid and hated it. I can't imagine salvia being an enjoyable experience. Not to judge or anything else but personally, I would rather be a productive member of society rather than go out of my mind and potentially harm myself down the line by using these drugs. If I want to step away from reality, I read or write a book.

I don't understand the point of drugs. Granted, I'm 14, but I can guarantee you that I'm never going to try any of those things. I'm perfectly, wonderfully high on life, and that's enough for me. I don't really see why people take these risks knowing that they're gambling their own health.

I've definitely lost some respect for Miley since I heard about her smoking salvia. Legal or not, a teen celebrity should take care to set a good example for her fans, who are primarily girls around the age of 9. I really hope she makes better choices, because she was raised better than that and she needs to act like an adult now that she's 18. I know that a lot of people get on her for her "provocative" outfits and songs (e.g., Can't Be Tamed), but this was the shocker for me. Miley, please think about your actions and the effects they have on yourself and on your many adoring fans.

Honestly, I am not suprised nor disappointed in Miley. This is a legal substance, and until it is illegal in California, one should not bash her. She is 18, therefore it is legal for her to both purchase it and use it. I believe we should focus more on alcohol use; it would have been illegal if she had been drinking alcohol, or was seen driving around wasted like most celebrities do. She was in her own home, smoking a legal herb with friends. Albeit, she should not have allowed this to be filmed, as she is in the spotlight. I personally believe salvia is much worse for you than marijuana, so it is a conundrum to me why marijuana is illegal while salvia is not illegal in all states. I have never heard of anybody smoking marijuana and seeing things that were not there, or jumping off of buildings. Typically, if there is a negative tripping experience linked to marijuana, it is because the substance was laced with a man-made substance such as LCD or speed. Nobody has ever died from strictly marijuana. However, many have died from alcohol use. I believe marijuana should be legalized, as it does have many health benefits. However, like anything else, it can be abused and idiotic people who get stoned and drive around acting like hooligans get something banned that can be used by responsible people for relaxation, migraines, chemotherapy pain, and other health issues. I would much rather smoke a little bit of marijuana from a pipe in the safety of my own home than to take the chance of getting addicted to man-made legal prescription medications like Xanex, Loritabs, morphine, etc.
