Tales of a neti pot skeptic

It's just about allergy season and guest blogger Jill Rosen shares with us her take on the neti pot. Oprah loves them, some studies say they work, and there are even You Tube videos on how to use em, parodies included.

Here's Jill's take:

Has anyone tried the neti pot – the organic-seeming, would-be cure to clogged sinuses? Yesterday I was so insanely stuffed up with allergies and god only knows what else, I was willing to try anything medicine, science or, in the case of the neti pot, yogis offer.

A friend had given me a neti pot months ago and it’s sat in pretty much the same spot in my kitchen ever since. I put mail on top of the box. It’s an ancient technique that involves what looks like a miniature Aladdin's lamp. That and a lot of balancing over the sink….

But desperation had me opening the box last night. Out came a little plastic kettle and an instruction sheet that told me to fill it with water and mix in one of the little Neti solution packets that came with it.

Then it had me leaning most awkwardly over the sink, head tilted to one side, kettle spout stuck hopefully up one nostril….. What’s supposed to happen at this point is the solution flows up one nostril, and out the other, flushing out your nasal cavity along the way. What happened to me is that 80 percent of the solution immediately streamed right out the nostril and into the sink.

I tried again and a little came out the other side. Not much. I repeated the deal with the other nostril.

No one was more skeptical of the pot than I – and I’m pretty sure I didn’t even do it right – but this morning my nose is markedly better.

I think I’m a believer and I’m wondering how others have experienced the Neti…. especially anyone with daily allergy issues….

Neti pots are cool. I should probably use mine more often. I have found, however, that if I wait until I'm really congested to use it, the water can't flow through. It gets backed up in my nose and I get that awful just-snorted-pool-water sensation. Just FYI.

i loves my neti.

I use the version from the same maker that is a plastic bottle that you gently squeeze while holding your head over the sink and the water flows up through your nostril. It is very simple to use and has made a dramatic difference in my health. I used to be plagued with sinus infections and bouts of pneumonia and now my daily health is dramatically better and i'm convinced that the neilmed.com product is the reason. I highly recommend it for daily use.

NeilMed makes a sinus rinse that works much better than the Neti. It is basically a small water bottle that operates much like the Neti. However, instead of relying on gravity, it relies on slight pressure. I have a deviated septum and have fought sinus infections for years....I started using the Neti and that worked well. The sinus rinse works GREAT!

I'm prone to stuffed noses. This past December, I decided to give netipot a try. I can honestly say that I have not had a single stuffed up nose since I started using it. This is the longest I've ever gone without a stuffy nose.

My extremely skeptical husband is even thinking about giving it a try now.

I have been using mine every morning for about a year now, and I love it. Last fall when I was battling the flu and a sinus infection, it was a miracle cure for relieving awful sinus pressure. I swear by it.

The last time I developed a sinus infection my doctor told me he no longer prescribes antibiotics for that. He told me to get the Neti pot and use it twice a day. I did, the infection cleared up, and I am now a believer. I use it whenever I feel that stuffy feeling coming on, and now I rarely get even a full-blown cold.

Neti pot is really the best thing on earth, I can not say enough good things about it! :)

Oh yes! my doctor tells me to use it.
I've been using the neti pot ever since Dr. Oz introduced it to me on Oprah! And yes it does work. Even if your sinuses are clogged, just giving it an irrigation to clean out all the bacterian daily dirt we breathe in makes a difference.

I've used the Neti Pot several times and it has worked perfectly well once I got the hang of it. But, when my husband tried it out he didn't fee the same decongesting relief. We've found that you have to be a certain kind of "stuffed up" for it to work well. But when it does work, there's nothing that can beat it. Not even a hot toddy.

It really helped stop my sinus infections. Love it so much, I co-produced a professional music video about the neti pot.

Our family swears by them!!! My husband has allergies and frequently becomes stuffy and will use it immediately. I had a sinus infection a couple of months ago, my first in many years, and it literally saved me and would provide instant relief. When I told the doctor she said I would recover faster for using it and she was right. We wouldn't be without one in our house.

Using a neti pot is not as dramatic as the author makes it sound. You make a saline solution of 1/2 tsp salt in 8oz of warm water. Use 4oz in each nostril. It helps to blow your nose before and after. Unfortunately, my results aren't as good as the other posters as it hasn't really cleared my stuffed sinuses and restored my sense of smell.

I have suffered for years and since I started using the neti pot, I haven't had to use sinus medications at all. I am alergic to half of the trees and plants here in Maryland. Usually I have by this time I have had 4 to 6 severe sinus infections. I haven't bought my perscription sinus medications or over the counter meds since trying this two years ago when I was living in Arkansas. I recommend it to everyone. If they would just get over their fear of feeling dumb when using it, they would feel great.

I love my neti, and have used it for years to get rid of my allergy symptoms.
