Nurses to Mariah Carey: quit the naughty routine

The folks at the Truth About Nursing, a Baltimore-based group concerned about demeaning portrayals of nurses have a new target: Mariah Carey.

Yep, you heard that right. The pop star's video for her song "Up Out My Face" takes the naughty nurse stereotype to a new level of low, according to Sandy Summers, the group's director. Complete with a booty-grazing nurse outfit, white cap and stockings, Mariah's version of naughty nurse has real nurses in an uproar, apparently.

They dissect the video and the lyrics here. The group has even launched a letter writing campaign urging Ms. Carey herself to "make amends by withdrawing the video from all distribution, avoiding the stereotype in the future and publicly apologizing to the nursing profession (in a music video perhaps!)."

Hmmmm, OK. I wonder, have any other Mariah Carey videos resulted in any formal apologies?

Take a look and let us know what you think.

This is a case of wishful thinking for a handfull of nurses.

Haha! You make me laugh im a nurse and have no problem with it, why dont you go attack internet porn with nurse fetish huh? Dont be dumb its something fun

First of all....if they really looked at the video correctly...she is playing a Babrie Doll...not just a regular nurse...its making fun of how Barbie can do anything..like be a doctor, nurse, vet, pilot...and still look sexy doing it and never age...maybe people should get their facts right before they complain. My moms a nurse and though the video was cute. im guessing the nurses who made the complaint didnt look like mariah and are jealous that they dont look like her when they walk into work. ;-)

Wow, these nurses need to get a life. This is a funny song and video. I love it. Meant for a laugh, not meant to be taken so seriously. Chill out. There's poverty, malnutrition, and disease out there. They need to be focused on helping to eliminate that stuff, not Mariah Carey videos. Some people are so absurdly ridiculous, it's unbelievable.

Its just a video, its not that deep and it doesn't represent the entire nursing profession and if you think it does you must have an inferiority complex. Its fiction, we all know most nurses aren't that sexy but way to get yourselves some publicity.

U nurses should be embaressed for real! Shes wearing a costume in the video, Its a good cute video. Do us a favor and focus your attention elsewhere. It makes me nervous u guys put so much work into this.

I don't find this offensive at all. I think this organization should concern themselves with something a little more relevant and monumental than a music video....sad.

All controversies such as this just give the artist more publicity and I hope Mariah makes a fortune for this ridiculous accusation. They wish Mariah was thinking about them when she made this video.

I'm a nurse, and I have a big problem with this. It's a shame that most popular culture depictions of nurses focus on men's sexual fantasies and not on nurses as competetent, caring health professionals. On a broader scale, cultural references that marginalize women as having value only as sex objects demeans women. BTW, I'm also male, straight and married so don't pigeonhole me as some kind of women's lib nut job.

What is the problem with those guys anyway? This is just a music video.
