Maclaren stroller company announces huge recall

Stroller company Maclaren USA announced a huge stroller recall this morning affecting more than 1 million strollers after a dozen reports of children's fingertips being amputated when they put their hands into a side hinge.

Our colleagues at the Consuming Interests blog give us the full details.

The recalled strollers include 11 different models, details of which can be found at the company website www.maclaren.us/recall or by calling (877) 688-2326. The products were sold from 1999 through November 2009 at stores like BabysRUs for $100 to $360.

Maclaren has posted the soltuion of the recall. You need to contact them to recieve a FREE kit to cover the strollers hinge mechanism on the affected strollers.

I must say I am baffeled how you pinch your fingers on a stroller you open with foot pressure. I own a Twin Techno, and to open it I release the latches and press two foot post to open the stroller while holding the handles. Read the instructions people

My son's finger was caught in the hinge when I unfolded the stroller. Thankfully he only had a bruised ring finger and I know it could have been worse.

Whether you read the instructions or not the manufacturer should have considered the possibility that a child's finger could very likely find its way between the hinge and rod of the stroller.

He still remembers the incident every time we use the stroller.

I think other than just reading the instructions people should be watching their children. And they're children so of course they will get hurt every now and then. They can get hurt from anywhere or anything if a parent is not watching them. Everything is now not child safe. I'm happy companies are taking precautions but then again like I said, watch your child. For example, how about the bumbo incident. Parents said they weren't safe but if u leave ur child unattended and on top of the counter well.... The maclaren strollers have the hinges on the back. Good precaution but wow! The recalls these days just caused by negligence.

To Lory: I own a Maclaren EasyTraveler, and I have been reading about the recall this morning. What baffles me is how a child's fingers can get in the way when the stroller is folding/unfolding. The child is not in the stroller when doing that, right?

So Lory, could you please describe what happened to your son? I simply do not understand. (hope your son is better now)

besides reading instructions...watch your children when you open your stroller! and this can be with anything...strollers, swings...everything must be done w supervision.
