Interest in an Unleashed Pets 'O Baltimore calendar?

Floating an idea here... a BIG idea....

Wondering who among the Unleashed faithful would be interested in creating a group calendar.... You guys would send in your very best pet pictures and I would combine them to create the Pets of Unleashed 2010 or something like that.

To make it work, we'd need at least 12 of you to send in pictures -- ideally more so that it would be competitive, offer a bit of a selection....

When an ordinary dog carrier just won't do....

A limited edition dog carrier created by designer Marc Jacobs is one of six deluxe  accessories being offered at the 'L' Excellence du Savoir-Faire' exhibition at Sotheby's auction house in London. The chi-chi auction includes  Louis Vuitton limited-edition, special-order pieces by the likes of artist Damien Hirst, chef Ferran Adrià, photographer Annie Leibovitz, musician Gustavo Santaolalla, Jacobs and Patrick-Louis Vuitton.

The base price is listed in pounds -- 25,000 to 35,0000. I'm not sure how much that is in dollars but can only imagine it's one of those if-you-have-to-ask-you-can't-afford-it situations....

The auction takes place Tuesday (today), with proceeds going to the Red Cross to fight malnutrition in Niger.

Nice holiday present for Teddy Bean. Anyone? Anyone?

Chew toy benefits military veterans

Here's a novel idea: A shoe that your dog can chew for a good cause....

My Good Dog's Chewy Shoe dog toy, a red, white and blue rubber creation for dogs to gnaw on, has raised more than $38,000 since it was introduced earlier this year. That's all money that goes to  “Dog Tags: Service dogs for those who’ve served us,” a program to train and provide service dogs to injured U.S. veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Two dollars from every Chewy Shoe purchase are donated to the Dog Tags program. Service dogs in the program are trained by inmates in New York City-area correctional institutions as part of the Puppies Behind Bars initiative.

“The proceeds from sales of the Chewy Shoe are helping us continue the important work of supporting our veterans,” Gloria Gilbert Stoga, founder and president of Puppies Behind Bars, said in a release.

Cute Costume Coundown: Bail Bonds Pen!

It's hard to say enough about the Baltimore fabulousness that is this costume. Brilliant really. Somehow Tito the Chihuahua didn't win Best Hon costume in BARCStoberfest last weekend in this. I don't know why. A Big Boyz Bail Bonds giveaway pen.... Sigh.... I think the genius might have been too much, ahead of its time.....

Big huge round of Unleashed applause to Healy and Alexey for putting it together.

Cute Costume Coundown: Lady Catherine de Bourgh!

We've got a lot of diversity and flexibility here at Unleashed's Cute Costume Countdown to Halloween. One day we've got sushi, another day we've got witches and today....we've got literature.

Lin, who sent this all the way from California, shows off her pup, Miss Pup, dressed as Lady Catherine de Bourgh from Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice."

Something tells me Lin never runs into another Lady Catherine de Bourgh at the dog park Halloween parade...

She writes, "When Miss Pup was an ingenue, she was the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio."

1st for pets at Fells Point Halloween bash

For the first time, dogs will be part of the infamous Fells Point Halloween celebration.

The folks at Koopers Tavern, a place that loves dogs so much, it's even named after a yellow lab, are inviting people to dress up their pups and bring them over for the Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest.

The contest runs from 11 to noon on Saturday, right outside the tavern on Thames Street. There is a $5 entrance fee that benefits Mid Atlantic Bully Buddies. Prizes have been donated by Howl in Hampden.

Cute Costume Coundown: Crabcake!

People really love to dress up Pugs. Here is Gordon, a little cutie whose owners, Patrick and Alison, keeps him looking stylish...or something.... for any number of holidays. Gordon couldn't be more Maryland than this, dressed as a crabcake. He's even licking his chops! (It looks to me, however, that there's a lot of filler in there.)

Patrick tells us this year little G, who's 5, will be dressed as an elf!

Cute Costume Countdown: Breast cancer survivor!

This is Lexie, who belongs to Bekye Eckert and participated in the Westminster Petsmart's Halloween parade and contest last week. She was dressed as herself, a breast cancer survivor.

The 10-year-old Maltese rescue had two surgeries for metastatic mammary cancer; in February her prognosis was six months.

"Of course we're thrilled she's still with us and doing well, and we are grateful for the opportunity to spread the word about cancer in pets because it's surprising how many folks who don't know that pets suffer from many of the same diseases humans do ... diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and unfortunately, cancer," Eckert says.

Lexie was diagnosed with malignant metastatic adenocarcinoma in February after her first surgery and had a second surgery in June.

Bicoastalchickie has shared with us this picture of Baby, her 5-year-old Maltese in this bewitching little outfit. She says she found the witch hat at PetSmart a few years ago, and got the cape at Target last year.

This year Baby will be less-formally celebrating Halloween, wearing a little pumpkin-y Halloween tee Bicoastalchickie's mom bought for her at Old Navy.

Cute costume countdown to Halloween!!

With Halloween right around the corner and BARCStoberfest on Saturday, I thought it would be fun to have a Cosume Countdown, featuring an animal in a costume every day up till Halloween -- and even right on afterward if you guys keep the costume pictures coming. SEND IN PICTURES! We'll show off the best, the silliest, the cutest, the craziest --- anything really. Just send it with an explanation of who you are and who's the lucky fur thing in costume. (Send JPEGS to jill.rosen@baltsun.com)

I'll start with great pictures that I've collected from the wire -- including a number featuring these adorable pugs who are lucky enough to have a costume designer mom.

This photo taken Oct. 4 shows pugs Mochi, left, and Olive posing for a photo dressed in their flower costumes at their home in Huntington Beach, Calif. The stepsisters have been geisha girls, surfer girls and sushi over the years. They may not understand the tradition, but "pugs understand positive energy," explained dog owner, partner and costume designer Lisa Woodruff.

Does the dog need a sweater?

Brrr. It's cold today. Walking Teddy Bean this morning I wore mittens. But he was nude, harness aside.

Does The Bean need a sweater? Maybe a little coat?

Yes, he has built-in fleece, sort of, but is that enough? Since I bought the Halloween costume a few weeks ago, I feel like I've opened the door to potentially slide down the slippery slope of dog wardrobe-ism. I have to say, considering I was utterly against the dog clothes concept until recently, I've since run into many quite reasonable people who say they put their dogs in things to keep them warm.

And I'm not just talking small dogs! And I'm not just talking women! I ran into a man at the park a day ago with a quite stately Weimaraner and he said with its flat coat, the dog likes to slip on a sweatshirt when the temperature dips. He said the dog gets all excited when he sees the sweatshirt because that means walk time.

So what do you think? Who's down with the sweater or coat concept? Who not so much?

I think there will be some prizes in this one, depending on how responses go.....

The dog bed for people who love Crocs

If you love Crocs -- or perhaps even if you despise them -- this just might be on your holiday wish list.

The Sasquatch Pet Bed company (Bigfoot, get it??) is offering the world a bed for dogs or cats shaped like a giant shoe, specifically like what has to be the least attractive plastic shoe ever created.

The dog and cat version of the Croc comes in blue and pink and camo -- just like the real things. The little Schnauzer above even looks authentically dismayed to be photographed in one -- except that, of course, just like the real Crocs, the beds look undeniably comfortable.

They're $99.95 each. Please Santa!

Site identifies dangerous pet toys

All pet owners should glance through this new website -- it could save your dog or cat's life...or at least save you some money at the vet....

HealthyStuff.org, a new site that compiles the results of hundreds of consumer products tests, lists, in addition to many other things, information about pet toys.

The site tested more than 400 products, including beds, toys, collars and leashes. Disturbingly, many of them contained toxic substances. They found collars and dog beds with high levels of lead, a flowered puppy collar with a lot of cadmium and a squeak toy for cats with too much lead -- among other things.

They also list a number of products -- things by Kong and Nylabone, for instance -- that passed the tests with flying colors.

A beagle steals a hazardous pet toy from a display during a news conference at the Central Vermont Humane Society in Barre, Vt., on Wednesday. The Vermont Public Interest Research Group and the Central Vermont Humane Society announced the launch of a new Website that shows which consumer products – including those for your pet – contain potentially dangerous toxic chemicals. Area pets say: Go Ravens!

Today is the Ravens season opener. And what better way to mark the occasion, Unleashed-style, than to showcase the team spirit of a few area pets.

Here are Lori B's three little football fans: From top left: It's Ricki, Lola and Chi-Chi. They model -- and I do mean model -- their Ravens gear atop Baltimore's Federal Hill.

By the way, Chi-Chi won the Dog Snuggie contest a few weeks ago, so when the weather cools a bit more, look forward to pictures of him in his pink prize.

Dog Whisperer launching magazine

Shh. What's that? It's either the rustling of money or Cesar Millan whispering about a new venture...maybe both.

The canine trainer famously known as The Dog Whisperer is launching a new magazine called Cesar's Way. This is in addition to his book, products and TV show about helping dogs with behavior issues.

The Wall Street Journal reports: Cesar's Way, which hits newsstands next week, is filled with slick photos of celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and Jennifer Aniston with pets in tow. Articles include "Can Your Dog Fix Your Marriage? Just Ask Jada Pinkett Smith" and "7-Day Doggie Detox." IMG says it plans to publish two issues this year and six in 2010.

Does your pet have Ravens spirit?

As we approach Sunday's season opener for the Ravens, wondering if anyone has pets with passion for the purple? Will anyone be dressing their dog or kitty in the team colors? Getting out the violet leash for the weekend?

I've run into THREE Black Labs around the area named Raven. At least. And I saw a dog a couple weeks ago in a Ravens Jersey at Patterson Park -- and that was just preseason.

So I know some of you folks must be in on this decorated team spirit pet thing. ...

Tell Unleashed what you do to get your pet ready for the game. Send pictures (of course) if you've got 'em. Or tell on your friends and family who might have embarrassed their dog or cat by going too far....

Is that a dog or a baby in that stroller, ma'am?

As soon as I heard what my colleague and mom to Tig was doing with her new dog stroller, I had to have her write a blog post about it. So, here it is, Nicole Fuller in her own words about her something-less-than-lawful use of a pet accessory. Please, please discuss after you read -- would you be this brazen with your so-called fur baby?:

Ever get annoyed with those “No Dogs Allowed” signs? Do you want to be able to take your four-legged friend with you to more public places?

I’ve got the answer for you: buy a dog stroller.

I recently bought my Miniature Pinscher – Tigger “Tig” Fuller – a brand-new teal blue doggy stroller on Ebay for $49.99 with the express reason of being able to take him EVERYWHERE with me.

And let me tell you, the doggy stroller has worked like a charm! Tig has been to all sorts of places that dogs aren’t really allowed – supermarkets, clothing stores and pharmacies. And not a single store manager has tried to kick him out.

Tig has slopped on his own cup of iced water while in the comfortable confines of his stroller at a Starbucks in a Barnes & Noble while I read celebrity gossip magazines. (A man playing Chess at a neighboring table complimented Tig’s good behavior.)

As I perused the luscious produce at Whole Foods, Tig lay quietly in his stroller, only reacting when I picked up a package of his favorite Wellness dog treats.

Vick dog goods -- would your pup want some?

Ok. So today we've found out that the NFL's official shop sells dog jerseys with Michael Vick's name and number AND that someone out there is marketing a Vick chew toy for dogs.

At Unleashed, we won't be giving away anything with Michael Vick on it, but we WILL happily give out a nice prize today for the person who could best explain which of those two items they'd like to have for their dog -- and of couse, why.

Or, maybe you have another Vick dog item in mind that your dog would like to get his paws on...tell us what that might be.

Get your creative comments in by the end of the day, and there will be a prize or two in the works....

The Dog Snuggie Contest: And the winners are.....

And the Great Battle for Dog Snuggies of 2009 has closed....

It was a most healthy competition -- especially among those vying for a Snuggie to fit a small dog. Clearly many Unleashed readers really, really, really, really want to your little fur things into a blanket with sleeves. As for you large dog owners -- what, you don't like your dog to be warm and cozy AND be able to answer his cell phone at the same time? Sheesh.

Anyway.

I was most impressed with a number of the "applications." Many were appeals from dogs themselves. Who knew so many dogs were online? Like CiCi, a "foster transport failure" who loves life in the North with her new family but, when shivering in January, still longs for those sunny Southern winters. Or the daschund named Hamish who plaintively wrote, "I only need a small one, just one little small Snuggie to make me feel safe and warm. I promise I'll wear it everyday."

Dog snuggie: Win one with mere words...

When we announced the invention of the Dog Snuggie last week, reaction was HUGE. Clearly people have been dreaming of this moment, a chance to sit side-by-side on the sofa with their dog, in matching be-sleeved blankets.

Well, thanks to Unleashed, that could be you -- as soon as next week.

I've got one in a size Small (for very small Teddy Bean sized dogs.) And I've got a Large, for dogs that aren't huge, but, say, Lassie-sized.

All you need to do is tell me, in extreme detail, why your dog needs a Snuggie. You also have to tell me if you're shooting for the Small or the Large.... AND -- and this is critical -- you must promise that if you win one, you'll send back pictures of your dog in it. Bonus if you have a Snuggie and will swear that the picture will include both of you all Snuggie-fied.

Get your responses in by late afternoon today, if possible. And I'll announce the winner on Monday. Like last week's Crazy Cat Lady contest, the two winners will be chosen on the quality of their responses. There could be Unleashed magnets for a few runners-up.

Want to save money on pet food?

Who isn't looking to save money -- if possible -- on dog and cat food?

I know, we all want the best for our furry ones, but if you can have the best and spend a little less, who wouldn't do it? Consumer Reports recently offered some good advice on trimming the pet food budget.

The dollar-conscious magazine says:

Pricey doesn’t mean better. Avoid buying pet food because of the high price, pretty packaging, or fancy name.

Dog Snuggie: The Video

I just can't get enough Dog Snuggie. I found the video after I posted the original.

There's now a Snuggie for DOGS!

You know the dog has been jealous of your Snuggie. You, sitting there on the sofa, all cuddled up in that arm-holed wonder. Him, wound up, Snuggless, in a regular blanket, trying fruitlessly to work the remote. Who among us hasn't been there?

Well, the makers of Snuggie, the blanket for people who can't work a regular blanket, have solved that problem. They're unveiling The Dog Snuggie.

According to the company, more than five million Americans bought into the Snuggie lifestyle.

"With an estimated 74 million family dogs in the United States, it only made sense to keep those almost 300 million chilly paws warm this season," said Anne Flynn, Director of Marketing for Allstar Products Group.

The dog blankets are available in blue and pink and in a range of sizes to fit the smallest and biggest of canines.

They'll be available at stores including PetSmart, Petco and CVS, starting in August.

For $9.99, who can so no to a Snuggie -- for the dog.

Update on Teddy Bean, the foster... Small dog shower?

Alright dog people, if someone were to bring home a small dog, say, a Miniature Poodle, and they had to equip their home from the ground up, what are the basics?

What would everyone recommend in terms of the best type of leashes, collars, the best food (both wet and dry).... good shampoos? (Does one even need actual dog shampoo?) What other stuff???? (PS: And no one better say The Toy!)

Don't leap ahead to any conclusions here regarding a certain Bean. I'm just collecting information. .....

PSS: Speaking of small dog showers, The Bean got caught in a huge downpour walking home from the park yesterday evening. His first taste of summer rain, most likely. He was soaked. Smelled like total Wet Dawg. He had to be bundled in a towel when he got home and dried off. I think he liked that part.

Teddy Bean snuggles upstairs. The concept of "upstairs" is still relatively new to The Bean. Because his paws slip on the hardwood, he won't walk up or down these steps -- though he will do other steps with more traction. So, to get to the upstairs realm, he has to hitch a ride in someone's arms.... Photo by Jill.

Woof: It's a sex toy for dogs

Is your dog single? Lonely? Having a hard time meeting other dogs?

Having no luck with the whole online thing?

One enterpising company has devised a gadget to fulfill his doggie needs.

Brazil's Petsmiling thinks its cornered the market with the DoggieLoveDoll, the world's first dog sex toy.

Teddy will not be getting one.

The company is marketing it for dogs who are often left alone. Apparently The Kong is so yesterday? Wow.

What's the dog saying? This gadget translates.

So you want to know what that bark meant, that growl that whine -- and who doesn't.

Well, a Japanese toymaker claims to have the answer: The “Bowlingual."

Takara Tomy was recently showing the device off at a toy, who, saying it can translate what a dog “says” into human language and emoticons.

People strap the device like a collar onto the dog. When the dog makes a noise, the Bowlingual will analyze what it means and let you know on an LCD screen.

The main catch? You have to be able to understand Japanese. That's the only language it comes in, so far anyway.

The gadget, which will be available in August, will cost you a little over $200, U.S.

Employees of Japanese toy giant Tomy poses with the "Bowlingual," a gadget that expresses dogs' emotions. The company unveiled it the annual Tokyo Toy Show in Tokyo last week. The "Bowlingual" analyses a dog's voice through a wireless microphone attached to its collar and then displays the dog's emotions through an audio and LCD display. Tomy will put it on the market on August 27. YOSHIKAZU TSUNO/AFP/Getty Images.

Find dog parks? There's an app for that

Does anyone's dog have an iPhone?

If so, you'll want to let them know that there's a new free application that will point dogs and their people to the dog parks closest to them at any given moment.

The technology comes from pet company Eukanuba. It's called Off Leash and available for download here.

The company says iPhone users simply tap into the "Locate Me" feature and within seconds the five nearest dog parks will populate the screen, complete with a map and driving directions. Of course in Baltimore, the nearest five will be spread pretty much into other cities....

In addition to finding dog parks for your pooch via the application, the company says people can access Eukanuba TV 24-hours a day and see doggish programming including "Planet Puppy," "Champions and Heroes."

OFF LEASH fans are also encouraged to share their favorite dog parks so that they are added to the evolving park database. Eukanuba will refresh the database with new dog parks every two-to-three weeks.

Even in recession, pet industry growing

While the rest of the economy goes to the dogs, pet-centered businesses are still riding high, according to new research.

The Los Angeles Times reports the pet industry is expected to generate $51.6 billion this year -- 1.3 percent more than in 2008, according to Los Angeles-based research firm IBISWorld. Even the number of cats and dogs as pets is expected to increase this year, by 2.4 percent to 169 million.

The veterinary services sector is branching into a wider range of services, offering chiropractics, ophthalmology, dentistry and dermatology, among others. Researchers anticipate that the segment will grow at an average annual rate of 4.3 percent over the next five years and pull in $22.3 billion this year alone in revenue.

Pet food producers also will grow steadily, making $15.2 billion this year as they experiment with natural and organic products. Demand for premium pet foods, with more owners asking for breed-specific brands and diet ideas, is helping to bolster the section.

Revenue from food, supplies and medicine will help pet stores earn $11.45 billion, with a minor contribution from sales of live animals as controversy builds over puppy mills and an increasing number of homeless animals ending up in shelters.

Pet grooming and boarding businesses will attract $2.69 billion in business in 2009, IBISWorld said.

Eyeware that dogs can't resist...this is good?

We're not sure this is the best sales pitch: Eyewear so irresistable to dogs, they'll constantly be trying to chew it up.

But hey, if that's what the company Eye-bobs wants to go with....

They brag in a press release, "The international, irreverent reading glass company has created a product so unique that even dogs are interested in them. Specifically, many faithful eye–bobs customers have notified the company that their pets’ favorite new chew toy is a pair of the funky frames."

Hmm.

“We get numerous e-mails from customers letting us know that their frames have been destroyed by their dog either as a chew toy or eaten entirely,” Julie Allinson, founder and president of eye–bobs eyewear said in the release.  “We knew that the vibrant colors in our summer collection like chartreuse, purple, zesty orange and red would attract the human eye, but now we know it’s appealing to the animal world as well!”

Hmm.

The glasses run $65 to $75 a pair -- kind of expensive, methinks, for a dog toy.

Maine gets animal welfare license plate

Isn't this a great license plate? Too bad you have to live in Maine to get it.

Someone should try to get us one in Maryland!

The Maine Adoptions Leaders Team lobbied state government for the creation of the new animal welfare specialty plate. The organization is is a partnership of Maine private businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies working on behalf of Maine's companion animals.

The group, which formed last May, managed to find 2,000 people who were willing to prepay $25 to get one of the plates by September 1st. The plate will benefit the Maine Animal Welfare Program. The new plates are targeted to be available for the public to purchase on October 1st.  Drivers will pay $20 for the plate the first year and $15 every year after that.

Main Adoptions Leaders designed the brightly colored plate that displays a cat, dog, rabbit, horse, and bird, with the words "respect. love. adopt."

"This specialty plate will enable animal lovers in the state of Maine to show their support and make a difference for Maine's homeless animals," Norma Worley, Director of the State of Maine Animal Welfare Program, said in a statement.

Is it dog food...or is it pate?

According to a new study, people apparently can't tell the difference between pate and dog food.

Either our dogs are more discerning than we thought, or pate isn't exactly all that.

The other day the LA Times published a story about a new study by the American Assn. of Wine Economists. When Wine Economists researchers gave 18 volunteers five food samples to try in a blind taste test, just three could figure out the Alpo.

"We have this idea in our head that dog food won't taste good and that we would be able to identify it, but it turns out that is not the case," Robin Goldstein, a co-author of the study told the paper.

Dogs go green for Earth Day

Earth Day is a good time to think about the carbon paw print our pets leave and what can be done about it. To help in that effort, we present some eco-friendly dog products and toys.

BioBag dog waste bags

We've talked on the blog before about the thorny environmental issue of using plastic bags for dog waste. Biobags are one solution. Made of cornstarch, they break down like food scraps in 45 days. The best-selling pet product on buygreen.com, they come in small and large sizes. Prices start at $4.39.

Orbee-Tuff Glow for Good Ball

Petside.com rates this recyclable, non-toxic ball as its No. 1 eco-friendly pet toy. We understand why: One hundred percent of the sales goes to the Planet Dog foundation, which supports canine service programs. Did we mention it's minty and glows in the dark? Price: $11.95 at planetdog.com

Dog necktie collars

OK, so maybe they're a little dressy for the park, but these fully functional, adjustable, clip-the-leash-on-'em collars (pictured) are actually made of old neckties. We give these high marks for being made of recycled materials but also for being adorable. There's one more benefit: For every collar sold, the Good Life manufacturer contributes 50 cents to organizations that help pets, people and the environment. Price: $24 at buygreen.com

Gift ideas for President Obama's dog

The 21st annual H.H. Backer Pet Industry Spring Trade Show is at the Baltimore Convention Center this weekend, and I paid a visit to get some ideas of what new pet items are hot. One thing I learned is that doggy showers are a big trend now. I don't mean shower as in getting the dog clean, but as in giving gifts to the new pet owner, the way friends give expectant parents baby showers. Actually, it makes a lot of sense, because with any new pet there is a certain amount of gear that's needed to go with it.

So with that in mind, I started to think about the kind of gifts that FOB (Friends of Barack) might get the president when he brings his new dog home, as is expected when he returns from Europe. I talked with some of the pet show exhibitors and here some of the items we came up with:

doog beltA DOOG Walkie Belt. These belts include pockets for sanitary wipes, poop bags, a clip for the dog leash, and, most important, a clip for the iPod. Company representatives Terri Huntington and Amy Scherr assured me that the front pocket is large enough to fit a Blackberry as well. And at $23, it won't break the budget.

dog crateA Pet Gear Steel Crate. Wise pet owners know the best way to train a puppy is to use a crate. But these deluxe models come with molded plastic lids, a comfort pad and easy-loading side doors. Even better, the crate folds flat and has wheels for easy travel, so next time the president flies off to Europe the first dog can come along, too. These crates are pricey, around $300, but the first dog deserves the finest.

dog bedA luxury bed. There were lots of dog beds at the show, in leopard prints, and hot pink and floral patterns. But Brian O'Donnell, owner of Snoozer Pet Products, has had experience with presidential dogs. He says the first President Bush's dog, Millie, slept on a Snoozer round bed. While Millie's bed cost a modest $75, O'Donnell recommends the lurxury sofa model with an orthopedic memory foam padding for the Obama dog. The bed retails for about $200. O'Donnell says he can offer the bed in 30 colors and have it emblazoned with the presidential seal.

NYC boutique approaches pet products with a designer's eye

When I was in New York this week, I dropped by Trixie + Peanut, a trendy little store for the dog that has everything.

Clearly, some dogs aren't feeling the pinch -- unless it's a too-snug velvet collar around their teensy necks.

The Flatiron boutique (23 E. 20th St., 212-358-0881) was long and narrow with rows of designer dog clothes, designer dog collars, designer dog beds. Well, you get the idea.

It was hard to decide which was cuter -- the striped T-shirt with angel wings or the yellow rain slicker? The pink ultrasuede harness or the polka-dotted hair bows?

The celebrity dog toys were a hoot. You have your pouty-lipped Angelina Grrrowlie (Angelina Jolie), your hunky Brad Pittbull (Brad Pitt) and your belly-baring Biteme Spears (Britney Spears). Squeakers included.

Standing guard over all this was Tessa, a Boston Terrier in a rhinestone collar. She looked perfectly cozy in her dog bed by the register. It was shaped like a sleek sportscar, and the back bumper said Furcedes.

About Jill Rosen
Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
