Saturday's the day to get pet pix with Santa

No matter which side of town you live on, which worthwhile cause you'd like to contribute to, on Saturday, it will be almost hard not to get your pet's picture taken with Santa.

Santa, who apparently gets around, will be at Federal Hill Park, posing with dogs, cats and who knows what other animals to benefit the Franky Fund at BARCS. The fund pays for vet care for the sickest and neediest animals that come to the shelter. Pictures cost $10 and Santa will be waiting at the park from 10 to noon. Santa will also be at Riverside Park on Dec. 12 for pet pictures, also 10 a.m. to noon.

Meanwhile, across town in Canton, at the Canton Dog Park, during the exact same 10 to noon timeframe, Santa will also be posing with pets. Those pictures cost $15.

If you already have pictures of your dog or kitty with Santa and would like to share them, send 'em on in. I'll post only the cute ones. ;-)

Another local fundraiser for Rescue Ink

One thing is for sure: Baltimore loves Rescue Ink.

Something about the tattooed gang of animal rights crusaders has hit home with pet lovers in this city. First the barrage of tattoo pledges to convince the Long Island-based group to come to town. Then the actual tattoofest last month when they made it here, to this: Locals throwing a fundraising bash in their honor.

The benefit will be Saturday, Nov. 21 at Midtown Yacht Club. Things kick off at 9 p.m. There probably won't be any appearances by the guys, nor any tattooing being done on site -- it's just having a good time to support a good cause. And, hey, maybe a chance to show off some of those new paw print tattoos.

There will be drink specials and raffles. Admission is $10.

Help feral cats Saturday at shelter workshop

If you're free tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon, maybe you could take a hour or two to help feral cats.

Community Cats Maryland is having a shelter building workshop where they'll teach people how to build winter shelters for feral cats. You can help the group build shelters, or build one to take home for feral kitties in your own neighborhood.

Here's what the group says about the event:

We'll supply the power tools and expertise, we just need volunteers to supply the manpower!

These cat shelters are made out of plastic storage tubs, which can be purchased at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. The 18-gallon Rubbermaid Roughneck bins like these work well.

Fidos for Freedom Stroll on Saturday

Fidos for Freedom, a non-profit that trains and provides service dogs and hearing dogs to those who can't do everything for themselves, is having a fund-raising walk on Saturday.

The group, which also has a therapy dog program and a D.E.A.R.  (Dogs Educating and Assisting Readers) program, is having its annual Fall Stroll 'n Roll on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Centennial Lake in Ellicott City. Since it's Halloween, costumed dogs are welcome.

Fidos is asking for a minimum donation of $20/person and encourage groups to form teams. There will be raffles, vendors and a flyball demonstration.

1st for pets at Fells Point Halloween bash

For the first time, dogs will be part of the infamous Fells Point Halloween celebration.

The folks at Koopers Tavern, a place that loves dogs so much, it's even named after a yellow lab, are inviting people to dress up their pups and bring them over for the Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest.

The contest runs from 11 to noon on Saturday, right outside the tavern on Thames Street. There is a $5 entrance fee that benefits Mid Atlantic Bully Buddies. Prizes have been donated by Howl in Hampden.

Cute Costume Coundown: Crabcake!

People really love to dress up Pugs. Here is Gordon, a little cutie whose owners, Patrick and Alison, keeps him looking stylish...or something.... for any number of holidays. Gordon couldn't be more Maryland than this, dressed as a crabcake. He's even licking his chops! (It looks to me, however, that there's a lot of filler in there.)

Patrick tells us this year little G, who's 5, will be dressed as an elf!

Cute Costume Countdown: Breast cancer survivor!

This is Lexie, who belongs to Bekye Eckert and participated in the Westminster Petsmart's Halloween parade and contest last week. She was dressed as herself, a breast cancer survivor.

The 10-year-old Maltese rescue had two surgeries for metastatic mammary cancer; in February her prognosis was six months.

"Of course we're thrilled she's still with us and doing well, and we are grateful for the opportunity to spread the word about cancer in pets because it's surprising how many folks who don't know that pets suffer from many of the same diseases humans do ... diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and unfortunately, cancer," Eckert says.

Lexie was diagnosed with malignant metastatic adenocarcinoma in February after her first surgery and had a second surgery in June.

A little more on this sweet pup here.

Shop-A-Paw-looza ends in one day! Get the bids in!

For the past couple of weeks, bidding has seemed strong at the online auction, Shop-A-Paw-Looza that benefits the Maryland SPCA....but it closes TUESDAY at 9 p.m.

So if you want to get your hands on some pretty cool stuff while supporting the SPCA (which brought Teddy Bean to Baltimore), you need to get your bids in.

There's everything from two tickets to the Bruce Springsteen show at First Mariner (though I'll be honest, you need big bucks to win that one) to gift certificates to local restaurants, salons and dog washes. There's packages with wine and beer, doggie day care passes, tickets to the theater -- all kinds of stuff.

Check it out here.  The poster, at left, done by the artist who did the famous Obama campaign image, is just one of the items up for bid.

Halloween specials on orange, black kitties!

Two area shelters are offering great deals on orange and black cats this week to celebrate Halloween.

At the Maryland SPCA, all adult orange and black kitties are free ALL week!

And then, at Baltimore Humane Society, all cats with any orange and black markings are half off!

Not bad. I looked and there are a TON of eligible kitties at both shelters....

Don't forget, at BARCS, all dogs are just $13 to adopt through Halloween.

Trick or treat!

Teddy Bean reminds all about BARCStoberfest

The Bean would like everyone to remember that BARCStoberfest, originally scheduled for last Saturday, has been postponed to this Sunday. It will still be from 11 to 4 p.m. at Patterson Park, but at the Pagoda area.

The 5th annual fundraiser for BARCS is a festival for animal lovers of all ages and is, they say, the canine social event of the year. The event raises awareness and much needed funds for the 12,000 animals BARCS takes in each year. There will be a silent auction, pet costume contests, local artists & vendors, adoptable pets, animal health & welfare experts and pet demos.

The Strut Your Mutt Walk, which The Bean has been raising money for, will begin at noon and will take participants on a walk around beautiful Patterson Park. Registration the day of the event begins at 11am. Pre-registration with a donation of $40 is required to guarantee a t-shirt and can be done online.  Registration will also be accepted on the day of the event, but t-shirts are limited at the event so people are strongly encouraged to pre-register. The walker who raises the most money for the shelter’s animals will win the Grand Prize - a Dell laptop valued at $500!

Cute Costume Countdown: Johnny Cash!

So some locals have joined the Unleashed Costume Countdown 2009. Here we've got Johnny Cash, otherwise known as Frothy Brown Porter. That's his name 'cause, as his mom Angela Treadwell-Palmer says: "He looks like the foam of a porter."

Frothy is a rescued German Shorthaired Pointer. He can run 29 laps around Treadwell-Palmer's 1/2 acre lot without stopping. He can also run around our 4-foot diameter tree -- 12 times one way and then 12 times the opposite way -- in 1 minute without stopping. He sleeps head first - under the covers.

Every year his doggie daycare (Good Doggie Daycare on Ash St.)  has a costume party and this year he went dressed as Johnny Cash because Ms. Barbara, the morning manager greets him each time we drop him off with "Hey Porter" by Johnny Cash.  She calls him her Johnny Cash Porter.

Rescue Ink/Tattoofest: Here's what's up

This Saturday from 10 a.m to 7 p.m, the Baltimore Tattoo Museum (1534 Eastern Avenue) will sponsor a Tattoo-a-thon to accommodate all those who pledged to go under the needle to bring Rescue Ink to town.

Proceeds from the Tattoo-a-thon will benefit both Baltimore Humane Society and Rescue Ink, helping both groups to continue their important work in animal welfare. Tattoos will be given on a first come, first served basis. There will be two designs to choose from (shown here -- dogs to the left, cat to the right) and the prices will be $100 each. Rescue Ink will not be present at this event. The size of the tattoos will each be about the size of a silver dollar.

Rescue Ink tattoo: Some ?'s answered

There's been some confusion brewing about the Rescue Ink tattoo -- what it will look like, what it will cost, how the tattooing will work. Tracy Santos of the Baltimore Humane Society wrote me just now and wanted to clear up at least a few things. More to come later, but in the meantime, she says:

The design for the paw print has not been released yet, I plan on doing that as soon as I have all the details for that day in place. There will be two designs to choose from. The price discussed was $100, but still has not been confirmed. Baltimore Tattoo Museum has stated that if they can accomodate people's requests they will, but it is likely that they won't be able to, due to the sheer number expected to show up that day.

I feel like due to the misinformed person's comments many people are backing out and deciding to just donate directly to Rescue Ink. While it's each person's choice, we are just trying to think of the best way to accomodate everyone in a timely, orderly fasion. I hope to have more info asap, however I still need to touch base with a few people to get the details in place.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m on October 24th at Baltimore Tattoo Museum, and it will be on a first come, first served basis.

Thanks,

Tracy

BARCStoberfest on Saturday: Don't miss it!

Saturday is the day to celebrate your pet and hope Baltimore's animal shelter raise some much-needed money.

BARCStoberfest, the shelter's annual shindig, will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Patterson Park -- at the southeast corner, Linwood and Eastern Avenue.

There will be plenty of dogs, many, like Teddy Bean, dressed up, because there's a costume contest. You can see fundraising pups like The Bean walk the walk in Strut Your Mutt. Then there's a vendors, a silent auction, a chance to question an animal behavior expert, crafts, childrens' activities and micro-chipping.

BARCS needs support.

"We have seen a 10 percent increase in the number of animals surrendered to our shelter; many that were sick, injured, or even abused," Jennifer Mead-Brause, Executive Director of BARCS, said in a statement. "We are in need of support from the community more now than ever so we hope to see you at BARCStober Fest."

Money raised at the fest will help BARCS buy food, spay and neuter animals, and provide medical care and vaccinations.

There's a possibility of a rain date -- which would be Sunday, but with the forcast for both days less-than-perfect, BARCS officials said Thursday they expected to hold the event Saturday unless there was thunder and lightening.

For more information, visit the shelter's website or call (410) 396-4695.

Help Teddy Bean help BARCS

Teddy Bean, good dog that he is, has been working behind the scenes these last few weeks, trying to round up donations in support of dogs and cats, who, like he did just a few months ago, need to be rescued. He's doing Strut Your Mutt on Saturday at BARCStoberfest, and so far he's earned more than $300 for the shelter, making the little Bean one of the top fundraisers. But he can still do even better, if anyone wants to help.....

Cute costume countdown to Halloween!!

With Halloween right around the corner and BARCStoberfest on Saturday, I thought it would be fun to have a Cosume Countdown, featuring an animal in a costume every day up till Halloween -- and even right on afterward if you guys keep the costume pictures coming. SEND IN PICTURES! We'll show off the best, the silliest, the cutest, the craziest --- anything really. Just send it with an explanation of who you are and who's the lucky fur thing in costume. (Send JPEGS to jill.rosen@baltsun.com)

I'll start with great pictures that I've collected from the wire -- including a number featuring these adorable pugs who are lucky enough to have a costume designer mom.

This photo taken Oct. 4 shows pugs Mochi, left, and Olive posing for a photo dressed in their flower costumes at their home in Huntington Beach, Calif. The stepsisters have been geisha girls, surfer girls and sushi over the years. They may not understand the tradition, but "pugs understand positive energy," explained dog owner, partner and costume designer Lisa Woodruff.

You did it!!!! Rescue Ink is COMING to Baltimore!!!!

Rescue Ink is coming to Baltimore! I repeat: RESCUE INK IS COMING TO BALTIMORE!

Thanks to your amazing tattoo pledges that started here on Unleashed, to the amazing offer by Baltimore Humane Society to donate not only their property but transportation and lodging for the tattooed ones to get down here to Baltimore Tattoo Museum for agreeing to allow their artists to give their time...it's HAPPENING.

More details to come. But the quick down and dirty is this:

The tattoo fest will be Oct. 24 at the Tattoo Museum from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The tattoo price will be split with half going to Rescue Ink, and half going to the Humane Society.

Rescue Ink will be at the Humane Society Oct. 25.

So...everyone ready for paw print tattoos???? There were WELL over 100 of you last time we counted!!!!!

What to do this weekend? Dogfest!

If you're not running in the Baltimore Marathon on Saturday, and you're an animal lover, you really have just one place to be: Dogfest.

It just sounds like such a cool event -- and a big one that raises money for the Baltimore Humane Society.

First off, despite it's name, it's not just about dogs. Sure, there will be TONS of stuff for dogs, but there will also be cats to see and even horses. For the dogs, there will be contests (like for the Best Kisser! and the Best Costume judged by First Lady Katie O'Malley --who I hear is bringing one of the O'Malley family dogs, Rex.), swimming pools and games. For the pet lovers, there will be plenty of vendors, exhibits and demonstrations.

The gates at Shawan Downs in Hunt Valley open at 10 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $10. Dogs are welcome, but not on retractable leashes.

Teddy Bean will be there!

Bean pushes along in his BARCStoberfest quest

Thanks to continuous support from friends of The Bean, the little guy has managed to rally $275 to support BARCS. He's one of the dogs participating in Strut Your Mutt, the fundraising angle of BARCStoberfest, which happens Oct. 17 in Patterson Park.

Though he's just a rescued pooch himself, he realizes how good life is on the other side, and hopes his little furry effort can help other Baltimore dogs and cats get help, too. Thanks to everyone who's helped BARCS through Bean! And there's still time to sponsor him, or your own favorite doggie.

Someone furry has a Halloween costume...or two...

I said I wasn't going to do it, that I wasn't the type of pet parent that would put their dog in a costume.

And yet, we're approaching Halloween and Teddy Bean has, I'll admit it, a selection of things to wear.

Hee.

If he'll permit himself to be outfitted, he's going to look ADORABLE. But if he doesn't want to be costumed, I'm not going to force him.

I just decided it's the spirit of the season -- where's the harm in a little festive costume? Especially, if, hint, hint with the picture to the right, its would be ridiculously perfect for him? Heh.

Does anyone have strong feelings about pets in costume? I'm pretty sure my deskmate to the right, keeper of the B'More Green blog, would dress her Dizzy up over her dead body.

If you are pro-costume, want to share some of your all-time greatest Halloween hits? Or perhaps what your furry one will be dressing as this year, if, of course, the little dear will keep it on?

(You can also upload a photo to our pets in costume reader photo gallery.)

Would you pay to see 'The Dog Whisperer' live?

The Dog Whisperer, who you can see all the time on cable TV, is going on tour...and he's kind of a pricey ticket.

Cesar Millan will bring his PackPower Tour to the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va., on Dec. 6. Tickets will cost anywhere from $39.50 to a whopping $150. That seems like quite a bit of money for a guy whose act is usually free. And he's not exactly Bruce Springsteen, performancewise.

Tickets go on sale October 10 at 10 a.m.

According to his press release the live show  will be quite something: “From Sheepdogs to Schnauzers, Poodles to Pomeranians, Cesar Millan will have audiences spellbound as he shares his amazing insights on dog psychology and how people can inadvertently play a role in their dog's behavioral issues,” said tour producer Bill Silva.

Teddy Bean rearing to go for BARCStoberfest

BARCStoberfest is just two weeks away -- Saturday October 17 -- and Teddy Bean can hardly wait. He'll be doing the walk and hanging out at the Sun's booth. He can't wait to meet everyone and to, hopefully, raise some money to help dogs and cats, who, like he did just a few months ago, need rescued. Thanks to generous Bean supporters, he's already raised more than $200. Go Bean Go!

Hope to see everyone there!

Another Patterson Park off-leash meeting tonight

Just got word that there's another meeting scheduled for tonight to talk about potential off-leash hours and a dog park at Patterson Park.

Here's details I saw online:

The Department of Parks and Recreation would like to have a second public forum on the issue of Off leash hours and a fenced in dog park in Patterson Park on Thursday, October 1st at 6 PM to be held at the Wolfe Street Academy School on Wolfe Street in Upper Fells Pt.

There's also a similar meeting planned in a few weeks for Riverside Park. The Riverside folks say the meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct 26 at Salem Lutheran Church, the corner of Battery and Randall.

City's 2nd dog park opens today in Locust Point!

It's a big day for Baltimore dogs! The city's second dog park opens in Locust Point -- officially at noon with a ceremony lead by Mayor Sheila Dixon.

The approximately $200,000 park was paid for by community fundraisers and the city. It's on the Andre Street side of Latrobe Park.

For those familiar with the city's original dog park in Canton, this one is about the same size, but with a few more bells and whistles. For instance, there's a water feature that snakes, creek-like across a corner of the park -- dogs can splash in it or even have a drink. And a big hill in the middle is covered with artificial canine turf, to keep it looking green all year.

Have you checked it out yet with your dog? What do you think? I'm thinking it might be a good place to have the discussed 1st Baltimore Unleashed puppy playdate... that Bean is so excited about.

Read more here.

Dog-a-thon this weekend at Oregon Ridge

The dog needs a walk you say? Why not do it for a good cause on Saturday at Oregon Ridge Park.

Pets on Wheels, a not for profit volunteer group that coordinates volunteers to bring animals to institutions for visits is having it's annual Dog-a-Thon. For instance, this Saturday while the event is happening, some dogs from the group will be at the Pratt central library on Cathedral Street in Baltimore at 2 p.m., for a literacy program where they'll be read to by children. Very cute.

To walk at the Dog-a-Thon, just register your dog online, maybe get some folks to sponsor you and help the group raise money. Whoever raises the most money will win a portrait of their pet by Carl Woerner of Pencil Works Studio.

In addition to the walk around the Cockeysville park, there will be various demos, contests and vendors. There will be items up for raffle, a silent auction, food and a disc jockey. Events run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Huge walk for canine cancer in D.C. Friday

Who can resist this face?

Join Lexie, a rescued Maltese from Hampstead as she and other dogs meet Friday in D.C. for the Canine Cancer Caucus.

The event is designed to raise awareness of the disease in dogs and to memorialize pets lost to cancer.

Lexie, by the way, a 10-year-old rescued Maltese, was diagnosed with a malignant mammary in February.

Walkers should meet at Lady Bird Johnson park at 10 a.m. Organizers hope the event will set a record for the longest dog march.

The event is organized by Luke Robinson, who is walking his two dogs more than 2,000 miles to raise awarness of canine cancer. More information is available here.

Small crowd, big ideas for animal abuse task force

I attended the first public meeting of Baltimore's newly appointed Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force earlier tonight.

The crowd that settled into the auditorium at Polytechnic Institute wasn't massive -- about 75 people, many volunteers at or supporters of the city's animal shelters and rescue organizations.

After the task force members greeted the crowd -- the panel includes elected leaders and their staff and representatives from shelters, the police, animal control, churches and non-profit groups -- people had a chance to address them. Many offered suggestions, a few told sad stories.

The overriding theme of the evening was education -- person after person urged the panel to consider creative ways to get into the schools and churches to teach young people empathy for animals.

Don't forget: Animal abuse task force meets tonight

The city's new Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force is inviting the public to its third meeting on Wednesday night.

The meeting will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, 1400 W. Coldspring Lane.

Mayor Sheila Dixon announced in July the creation of the task force, a group that includes representatives from city offices, the police, the states attorney’s office, animal welfare organizations and city residents.

The task force has been charged with assessing the effectiveness of Baltimore’s cruelty laws and brainstorming ways to raise awareness of animal abuse. They’ll also consider ways city agencies and animal advocates can better coordinate their efforts.

The task force will issue recommendations to the mayor.

Bean's up for a Baltimore pup playdate -- Who's in?

Since Teddy Bean is a very social dog, and there are so many dog lovers on Unleashed, it might be nice to arrange something of a doggie social in Baltimore.

A couple people in the office just game over to my desk and flat-out demanded a puppy playdate. So I'm throwing down the gauntlet: If you're into it, we can plan a little mutt meet-'n-greet for an upcoming weekend. Maybe I can get the Sun to sweeten the pot with a few prizes people can win for showing up. Otherwise it would just be fun to meet a few of the dogs we hear so much about....

So what do you think? Should we do it????

Area pets say: Go Ravens!

Today is the Ravens season opener. And what better way to mark the occasion, Unleashed-style, than to showcase the team spirit of a few area pets.

Here are Lori B's three little football fans: From top left: It's Ricki, Lola and Chi-Chi. They model -- and I do mean model -- their Ravens gear atop Baltimore's Federal Hill.

By the way, Chi-Chi won the Dog Snuggie contest a few weeks ago, so when the weather cools a bit more, look forward to pictures of him in his pink prize.

Does your pet have Ravens spirit?

As we approach Sunday's season opener for the Ravens, wondering if anyone has pets with passion for the purple? Will anyone be dressing their dog or kitty in the team colors? Getting out the violet leash for the weekend?

I've run into THREE Black Labs around the area named Raven. At least. And I saw a dog a couple weeks ago in a Ravens Jersey at Patterson Park -- and that was just preseason.

So I know some of you folks must be in on this decorated team spirit pet thing. ...

Tell Unleashed what you do to get your pet ready for the game. Send pictures (of course) if you've got 'em. Or tell on your friends and family who might have embarrassed their dog or cat by going too far....

Astros fans a bunch of animals

Maybe we can get the Orioles -- or even the Ravens -- do have something like this. On Monday night, for their game against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Houston Astros invited dogs into the park for their first Dog Day, something they hope to make an annual event. There was also a pet parade and a costume contest.

Dogs agree: Ellicott City tops for pet lovers

Frisky dog?

Long weekend?

You might want to check out why Ellicott City was chosen by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top places in the country for pet lovers.

We're pretty sure your dog would like to check it out, anyway. Here a number of area dog's seem to be adoring Worthington Dog Park on Hillsborough Road.

Check out, clockwise from top right, Hurley, a Minature Schnauzer running a ball back to his owner, Jody Scofield. And, Mary Grace with her owner Sister Anna Mae Crane, seemingly grinning from ear to ear. And, last there's Jackson, a Chocolate Lab hurrying a ball back to his owner, Tom Burns.

Don't miss the video.

Here's the corresponding story.

In case anyone wants to help raise money for BARCS and sponsor Teddy Bean as he participates in the "Strut Your Mutt" walk at Barcstoberfest on Oct. 17, he'd appreciate it. As a rescue dog himself, he's all in favor of helping other needy dogs in Baltimore.

Phelps, Shaq....and Herman the dog?

So today I'm going to be spending a fare share of the day watching Michael Phelps and Shaquille O'Neal. The two athletes will be sparring this weekend in Baltimore for a taping of Shaq's new TV show, "Shaq Vs" in which the basketball champ takes on other sports stars at their own games.

This weekend, he'll be trying to outswim Michael Phelps in the pool.

While that will be fun to watch, I can't help but wish Phelps would bring Herman, his elusive pet bulldog. We see Phelps all the time, but little Herman so rarely.

Maybe Shaq could beat Herman at swimming? Herman looks rather dense, like he might not float. Then again, so does Shaq. (Shh.)

Michael Vick on '60 Minutes' tonight -- watching?

So the infamous Michael Vick, just fresh out of jail for his role in a dogfighting ring and fresh into a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, is going to be on "60 Minutes" tonight.

Do you plan to watch? I do. I'm really curious to see what I can pick up about his attitude, his supposed contrition, behind the lines -- though his tone, body language, etc.

The show might include footage from this, Vick's first speaking engagement for the Humane Society. It was at a dog class in Atlanta a week or so ago.  No one was told in advance about the event -- and some people who showed up for class with their dogs were turned away. Vick reportedly spoke for about 12 minutes after being whisked in a back entrance -- and whisked right back out afterward.

So will you be watching? If you do, let us know what you think of his appearance, demeanor, etc. -- and if you think he's actually sorry for, as he calls it, his "mistake," which he did time and time and time again until he was caught for it and put in jail.....the "mistake" that lead to the death of countless dogs over who knows how long.....

(As a friend of mine said the other day, "A 'mistake' is serving red wine with fish. This was not a 'mistake.'")

Above, one of the scarred dogs rescued from Vick's dogfighting operation.

Waste away Friday at Barkaritaville

It's hot, it's Friday. You and the pup deserve a margarita. Or a "barkarita," as the case may be.

Check out the Barkaritaville edition of MDSPCA's Wine & Wag happy hour, from 5:30 to 7:30 this Friday. They encourage you and the dog to wear something tropical to suit the occasion. But I don't think it's required.

You can get tickets online for $10 buy them in person at the event for $15.

There will be a treasure hunt on the grounds for dog things, tours of the adoption area, paw painting, a pool party for the dogs and a chance for some off-leash play in the fun runs. There will be drinks for sale provided by The Wine Source and snacks from Lebanese Taverna.

They ask that you limit yourself to bringing just one dog.

Consider the 2nd choice on 'less adoptable' pet day

No one worries so much about the puppies and kittens -- the easy-to-adopt animals that seem to fly out of shelters.

It's the others that need help. The older ones. The ones with health issues. Maybe they're too big. Or the wrong color.

To nudge people into considering these less obvious pets, Petfinder has declared Aug. 12 Adopt-A-Less-Adoptable-Pet Day.

Petfinder.com surveyed shelters and found that 96 percent of them have adoptable pets with "extreme difficulty" finding homes. More than 40 percent have pets who've been waiting for homes for one or even two years.

Area dogs jumped for it this weekend

Did anyone catch this fun story in the paper over the weekend? The Sun had a reporter and a photographer at the Harford County Dock Dogs competition. It looked like so much fun! Hundreds of dogs jumping like crazy into the water!

Heated debate on Patterson Park dog issues

If you weren't able to attend the meeting this evening about the possibility of off-leash dog hours and possibly a dog park at Patterson Park, here are a few basic things you should know:

1. The meeting was extremely heated, with lots of raised voices and frayed tones on both sides of the issue.

2. The city parks department handed out very specific plans about the proposals on the table -- highlights of which I will detail for you below.

3. The city parks director told me after the meeting that a) she's leaning toward creating some sort of dog outlet at the park and b) there will likely be another community meeting within three weeks.

The proposal, drafted by Friends of Patterson Park Dog Park, would have two zones for off-leash hours -- one for small dogs, the other for large ones. Both are located just northwest of the lake.

Reminder: Patterson Park off-leash talks tonight

Just a reminder to anyone who's interested in the issue of creating off-leash hours in Baltimore's city parks. The first of the community discussions kicks off tonight with Patterson Park .

Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks will meet dog owners and other park patrons to talk about developing off-leash hours and/or a fenced-in dog run in the Southeast Baltimore park.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the General Wolfe Middle School, at Wolfe and Gough Streets. If you can't make it, I plan to be there and will blog afterward....check here after the meeting.

Parks head Wanda S. Durden has said the city is looking at off-leash hours in four parks: Riverside, Pattterson Park, Herring Run and Wyman Park. They're thinking about 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning and then 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at night.

But whether or not to proceed, she said, depends largely on what the community thinks of the idea.

The City Council voted in May to pursue the idea of off-leash hours.

Dog walk this weekend to benefit cancer

Here's something fun to do this weekend with your dog -- and for a good cause.

Howard County’s 2009 Relay For Life is holding a Bark For Life, a dog walk, on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. The walk starts at the pavilion at Lake Elkhorn off of Broken Land Parkway in Columbia.

Registration is at 8 a.m. People can also preregister  on Howard County’s Relay For Life website.

Like Relay For Life, a walk to support the American Cancer Society, Bark For Life, will also benefit ACS.

If you need more incentive, there will be prizes. There's a costume contest, a dog/owner look-alike contest and contests for best tricks, longest tail, shortest tail, best dancer, smallest dog and largest dog.

There's also something for the top three fundraising doggies.

Registration is $15 per dog, which includes a bandana. Deluxe registration is $30 --

Off-leash hours talks start with Patterson Park

Those community discussions about off-leash hours in parks are about to start with Patterson Park up first.

On Thursday, Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks will meet dog owners and other park patrons to talk about developing off-leash hours and/or a fenced-in dog run in the Southeast Baltimore park.

The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the General Wolfe Middle School, at Wolfe and Gough Streets.

When Unleashed last checked in on this issue, parks head Wanda S. Durden said the city is looking at off-leash hours in four parks: Riverside, Pattterson Park, Herring Run and Wyman Park. They're thinking about 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the morning and then 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at night.

Dog behavior classes -- for FREE!

A non-profit organization called B-More Dog is offering free dog behavior and handing classes.

The classes are for anyone with a dog they're having a hard time handling, says Erin Sullivan, president of B-More Dog. The classes, however, are ONLY for people. If you go, do not bring your dog.

The one-session classes, held at the Baltimore Rescue and Care Shelter, BARCS, are typically held on the last Sunday of the month. This month's class is at noon on Sunday July 26. It's expected to last about an hour.

The class will focus on ways people can detect behavioral clues in their dog's body language. Trainers will be available for a Q&A period.

"It's for people who really need help, people who are struggling with their dog and don't know what to do," Sullivan said.

There will be training discount coupons available to those who complete the class.

Sessions are also planned for August and September.

Selling puppies like produce at the farmer's market?

An interesting issue came up Sunday on the venerable Dining@Large blog. Elizabeth Large was discussing the shockingly high prices at the Baltimore Farmer's Market and someone chimed in to say she saw someone this weekend selling puppies -- Labradoodles -- at one of the stands.

DCDiva wrote: "I was pretty disturbed to see the flower people selling PUPPIES. IT IS A FARMER'S MARKET. It really disgusted me and I left their stand when I saw what they were doing. No need to support back-yard dog breeders."

Others chimed in too -- hotly on both sides.

DCDiva complained to Carole Simon, who organizes the city-run market, in an email she shared with Unleashed. She wrote:

"Instead of enjoying my shopping, I spent the entire time worrying about the welfare of these dogs. I do not know the vendor's name, but they sell flowers near the Breadery folks. Please follow up on this issue with the vendor. I do not want to see them selling puppies again, and I certainly will not ever patronize this stand."

Simon wrote back, appalled to hear the vendor was selling puppies, but vouching for the farmer, saying she'd been to the farm, seen the puppies and that they were being "treated like family." She said the farmer is a registered pedigree breeder.

So, what do you think of all this? Would you buy tomatoes from a guy that also sells Labradoodles?

Let's air it out.....

Photo update: Clarksville spa helps military dogs

In today's paper, Sun reporter Don Markus tells of a fundraiser in Clarksville held yesterday to benefit dogs in the military.

Dogtopia spa in Clarksville invited dogs in for a charity scrub down to benefit pups deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. (I added pictures on Tuesday 7/21 -- Jill)

Don says the inspiration for the dogwash is a very personal one for Dogtopia's founder, Amy Nichols. The daughter of a Vietnam War veteran and the wife of a former Navy radioman, Nichols established her K-9 Support charity five years ago and said it has donated more than $30,000 and "thousands of pounds" of supplies to military dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to Nichols, there are more than 1,000 military dogs deployed worldwide, including around 700 in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among the supplies being sent are protective goggles that the dogs wear while sniffing out roadside bombs, cooling beds, and more traditional items such as chew toys.

Ways to save your pet's life in a fire

About 500,000 pets are affected in some way by home fires each year. And the American Kennel Club and ADT Security Services want to do something to cut that number.

They declared Wednesday National Pet Fire Safety Day, a national day of awareness day to make pet owners aware of potential risks to pets in their houses.

Here are some tips:

Extinguish Open Flames - Pets are  curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.

Pet Proof the Home - Take a walk around your home and look for areas where pets might start fires inadvertently, such as the stove knobs and loose wires.

Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home.

Keep Pets Near Entrances – When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.

Teacup dogs vie for title of world's smallest

Our pet comrades at the LA Times report that teacup dogs, fashionable -- and at times seemingly an accessory for starlets, --  are now competitive. There's a hotly contested Guinness World Records title for smallest dog by height and smallest dog by length.

Scooter, above, is a 6-month-old Maltese whose owner, Cheryl McKnight of New Zealand, believes will one day hold the title of smallest dog -- heightwise. Scooter is just over 3 inches tall, measured from his feet to the top of his shoulder blade. Although he's still a puppy, McKnight says he hasn't grown at all since he was 2 months old, and she believes he won't grow any taller -- certainly no taller than the current recordholder, an American Chihuahua.

The record-holder, a Chihuahua named Heaven Sent Brandy, is fully grown and measures 6 inches long.

McKnight's sister breeds Maltese and gave Scooter to her as a gift. The tiny animal eats from an egg cup and apparently has his share of challenges as a result of his stature. "I can't take him for a walk or put a leash on him," McKnight told the New Zealand Herald.

Richard Gere: Dog is his co-star

Richard Gere stars in a Hollywood remake of Japan's long-cherished story of Hachiko, a faithful dog that died at a train station waiting for its master. But "Hachi: A Dog's Story" is more about the dog than about Gere, the 59-year-old actor told The Associated Press Wednesday.

"On this movie, I was definitely second-class," he told reporters at a Tokyo hotel.

The story of Hachiko is a legend among Japanese, a pet-loving nation that honors self-sacrificing loyalty.

Hachiko, the story goes, always used to wait at Shibuya train station for its master, a professor at the University of Tokyo.

Even after the professor died, the dog waited every day at the station for a decade, until it died in 1935.

People were so moved they built a statue of Hachiko at the station, which remains a popular rendezvous spot for Japanese today.

The story of Hachiko was made into a 1987 Japanese movie. Gere's version transports that story to a station in Rhode Island.

The movie premiered in the U.S. at the Seattle International Film Festival in June, and opens in Japan in August.

Gere said the Japanese breed of dogs called Akita used in the movie are close to wild dogs and very difficult to train. In the beginning, Gere was instructed not to even look at the three dogs that played Hachi.

"They only do something because they want to. You can't really buy them with food," said Gere.

Task force to try to prevent another Phoenix

In the wake of a spate of highly publicized cases of gruesome animal cruelty, Baltimore has created a task force to curb such crimes.

Mayor Sheila Dixon announced on Tuesday the creation of the Anti-Animal Abuse Task Force, a group including representatives from city offices, the police, the states attorney’s office, animal welfare organizations and city residents.

Over the course of a year, the task force will assess the effectiveness of Baltimore’s cruelty laws and brainstorm ways to raise awareness of animal abuse. They’ll also consider ways city agencies and animal advocates can better coordinate their efforts.

The task force will issue recommendations to the mayor.

“The protection and safety of animals in this city is an important concern,” Dixon said. “It’s imperative we treat this issue with the upmost importance.”

The first meeting will be at 6 p.m. July 15 at City Hall — though it won’t be open to the public. Task force chairwoman Caroline Griffin, an attorney who’s on the board of Baltimore’s Humane Society, said the public will, however, be welcome at some future meetings.

Meanwhile, Dixon is asking anyone who sees suspected animal abuse to call 311.

Task force to be born in wake of Phoenix

In the wake of Phoenix, a puppy doused with gasoline and set on fire, and two cats tortured to death, Baltimore City seems prepared to take a step to fight animal cruelty.

Mayor Sheila Dixon, together with the ASPCA, have a press conference scheduled for tomorrow morning to talk about the formation of a anti-animal cruelty task force.

I plan to attend and will have more details for you here and on The Baltimore Sun's news pages.

Anyone have any ideas what this task force should try to take on and who should serve on it?

Patriotic pets parade for Fourth, Part III

Here's the final round of pictures from the American Visionary Arts Museum's annual Fourth of July pet parade and talent show. What a fun event. So many really cute dogs and puppies. One African tortoise. One kitten. One beta fish named Blueberry. Plenty of pets came costumed -- a lot of them in red, white and blue. Others wore what nature gave them. Good stuff.

To see more pictures, click here.  And click here, too!

Patriotic pets parade for Fourth, Part II

Here is the second batch of my pictures from the hilarious Fourth of July pet parade and talent show at Baltimore's American Visionary Arts Museum today.

There will probably be at least a third batch, too.

There were about 80 pets registered for the event, even more unregistered  and my camera was stocked up on battery power -- I couldn't help myself.

Patriotic pets parade for Fourth

If you're an animal person, the American Visionary Arts Museum's annual pet parade should be a must on your calendar.

More than 80 pets came out -- many sporting their red, white and blue -- for the event this morning. The costuming was as eccentric as you'd expect from the museum. A pup wearing a pickle. Not one but two pugs with the stars and stripes painted (hairsprayed, actually) right onto them. A tortoise that essentially hauled an entire art project on its back.

Check out my first batch of pics. More to come later. Happy Fourth!! PS:

And if you have pictures of your own pets on parade, either from this Fourth of July or some other parade, submit them here to show off to all the online world.

First 76 dogs adopted --- FREE!

This sounds like a very Unleashed way to celebrate the Fourth.

Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is celebrating Independence Day with a Spirit of ’76 promotion. Beginning on Sunday, July 5, the shelter will be waive adoption fees for the first 76 dogs and puppies.

Every dog adopted from the shelter has been neutered and de-wormed; given rabies, DHLPP and bordatella vaccines; and provided with a flea preventative, a general examination, a food sample, and even a month of free health insurance.

“We’re celebrating Independence Day by making this best time ever to adopt a dog,” Jennifer Mead-Brause, Executive Director at BARCS said in a statement. “Our goal is give 76 dogs their freedom from life in the shelter by placing them in wonderful new homes.”

BARCS brought in 2,435 dogs from January 1 through June 30.

Fraidy cats (and pups) on the Fourth?

While Fourth of July revelers love the thrill and spectacle of a fireworks display, animal experts advise that the rocket's red glare might be too much for some dogs and cats.

We've got some advice for you, but first, for a story, the Sun is also looking for some people who'd be willing to talk to a reporter about how their pets react to fireworks. Comment to the blog and we'll get your information to the right person. Thanks in advance for sharing your tales of woe!

North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization, these tips to help your pets have a better chance of enjoying Independence Day:

1. Never take your pets to a fireworks display:

Fireworks displays can be great fun, but not for your pets. The loud noises and bright lights can terrify an animal. Even the best-behaved dog may react with fear and try to flee from the scene, which could lead him into traffic or get him lost.

2. Give your pets a safe and quiet retreat:

Fourth of July festivities can frighten an animal, so it's important to provide a safe and quiet place to relax. Whether you secure a room of the house or blanketed crate, they should have someplace "den-like" in which to retreat. Draw the curtains to block out the lightshow, and try putting the TV or radio on at a low volume as a distraction or as company for them if you go out. Make sure to KEEP THEM INSIDE for their protection.

Get your patriotic strut on, Balmer pets

It's time once to get out the star-spangled bows -- the American Visionary Arts Museum's annual pet parade is Saturday.

Even better than a typical parade, the event includes a pet talent show. Every entrant can take the stage and perform. Or, you know, just take the stage and look cute.

Museum officials say "in past years, hermit crabs have re-enacted Revolutionary War battles; dogs have spontaneously 'got patriotic' with owners' legs; a rabbit (and eventual Visionary Pet Award Winner) has incited an outbreak of Peace and Understanding with her gaze; and, of course, we've seen endearing attempts to sit, speak, roll over, high-five, fetch, catch, eat corn off the cob, etc."

Wow. I'm so there. With camera.

As if parading and performing weren't enough, there will also be a round of Musical Chairs for pets and a chance to cool off in pools.

There will be trophies awarded for Best Costume, Most Patriotic, Owner & Pet Look-alikes, Least Likely to Succeed as a Pet, and the esteemed Most Visionary Pet Award. Dressing up pets is encouraged but all animals must be leashed or carried.

Parade starts at 10 a.m. Registration, which is free, opens at 9:30 a.m.

So seriously -- no one's taking dog to work????

I'm starting to wonder if Take Your Dog to Work Day is just a figment of someone's imagination...

Almost NO companies -- including the Sun...Boo! -- are allowing it. Yes, I can see why it's a bad idea. People have allergies. People need to actually get work done in the office. Dogs can be a bit, um, rowdy. All that.

But what I'm wondering is how can there even be an official day declared -- an Official Capitalized Day -- if essentially no one in the country is allowed to do it???

That said, if anyone IS doing it -- and I know there are a few of you -- will you promise to take pictures and send them in so the rest of us can be jealous? Would love to document the doggies in the office thing....filing documents, barking into the phone, attending some meetings.....

AP photo of one of the few dogs that's apparently allowed in a work place. Sigh.

Uh-oh. It's time again for World's Ugliest Dog contest

The pretty ones get all the glory.

Except for on Friday -- when the not-so-pretty ones gather for the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Californial.

This year experts predict the Chinese Cresteds. a sort of unfortunate breed that seems to have a tight hold on this contest, may get a run for their bedraggled money. A boxer, shepherd, Shar Pei, Chinese Pug, and some mutts are all vying for the title.

Of the 15 contestants, only four participated the previous year. The only returning champion is Rascal, a 7-pound purebred Chinese Crested from Sunnyvale who won the World's Ugliest bragging rights in 2002.

Since winning his title, Rascal has gone on to become a movie star, appearing in a number of horror movies. Naturally and completely hairless except for his Mohawk and a little hair on his tail and feet, he sports dog warts and freckles and no teeth, which gives his face a crooked look. He has appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The View.

Contestants this year must provide veterinarian releases documenting the health of their dogs. As Judge and Fair Board Member Brian Sobel says, "We are looking for dogs who are naturally ugly."

Besides the infamy that comes with the title, the winning dog trots away with $1,000 and, believe it or not, a modeling contract.

Animal Planet will return for the third year to film the show for a Dogs 101 segment.

Facials, flat-screens and turn-down service

Shh. Don't tell your doggies and kitties, but what's being billed as a "pet resort" opens tomorrow (June 23) on the Eastern Shore.

With doggy day camp, a spa, limo service, flat-screen TVs, and a pet bistro, they might not want to come home.

Maryland Shore Pet Resort is located just off Route 50 in Vienna, Md., on more than 440 acres of property. It's owned by Eastern Shore residents Theresa and Frank Durham. Frank Durham is a dog trainer and breeder who runs the retriever training business Walker Branch Retrievers.

The resort can accommodate 160 dogs and 30 cats. It offers grooming, training, overnight stays, doggy day camp and fitness classes.

The resort offers "luxury suites," where family pets can get together and watch movies on flat-screen TVs while snuggling in lambswool blankets that are laundered daily. For extra pampering, people can upgrade their dogs or cats to "premium" beds, choose specially prepared meals at the Best-Friend Bistro.

Then, there's afternoon “Yappy-hour” and “Meowy-hour” where all of the guests nibble on “happy-tizer” treats made on-site at the “Pure Bred Bakery." They can exercise it all off swimming in the heated pool or hiking along a wooded trail.

If the furry ones are a little tuckered out from all that, perhaps a bit sore, there's the spa, with full body rub-downs, aqua therapy in a warm whirlpool with pulsating

Take Your Dog to Work Day...Who's in?

Friday is Take Your Dog to Work Day. As far as Unleashed is concerned, this is like a national holiday.

We want to know EVERYTHING about EVERYONE who's participating in this. Who's taking their dogs to work? Which offices are allowing dogs? Is anyone protesting the prospect of having dogs around the watercooler?

President Obama, everyone knows, taken strides toward ending the long-accepted separation between animals and offices. As you can see in the picture, First Puppy Bo has run of the White House and has even been spotted in meeting rooms. Animals at work -- can the message be any clearer??

It's up in the air if the Sun is going to play along with this. Some are worried about allergies, dogs relieving themselves indelicately, barking.... But other newsroom staff, would love to bring in their doggies. Dizzy, Baxter, Cody, are just a few staff dogs who'd like in.

Anyway, if you are planning to take your dog to work, you simply must document it in photos and send them to Unleashed. I'd love to post all kinds of pictures from folks, so make sure your cameras are fired up and ready to go. In the meantime, everyone who's going to participate on Friday, write in and let me know who you are and who you plan to bring!

Colorful paintings capture dogs' spirit, humor

If you're in the market for some dog art, or if you'd just like to browse a canine-oriented collection, you might want to head down to Solomons this month.

Artist Mimi Little, who specializes in colorful, vibrant and fun doggie depictions has an exhibit at Annmarie Garden through June 30.

The artist will be there Friday, June 12 from 6 to 9 p.m.

Little has been working on the dog paintings for two years. She says they aren't exactly portraits in the traditional sense. She tries to bring the personality of the animal to life with unusual angles or by focusing on individual parts of the animal – beseeching eyes or “don’t bother me” body language.

She incorporates multimedia, collage, found objects and crystals.

Another of her series of paintings, influenced by shore birds in Florida, will also be featured in the show.

Little will lead workshops on Sunday, June 7, from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. That's short notice to get over there, but she'll do it again on Saturday, June 13 from 10 am to 3 p.m. Little will be teaching a looser way to approach painting using a variety of multimedia techniques and focusing on the composition of the painting to bring the work to life. The cost of one workshop is $50 or $90 for both days.

Duchess of Windsor dog festival

This weekend you can celebrate Baltimore history AND Baltimore dog history at the 113th Duchess of Windsor Birthday Celebration.

To commemorate the city's ties to the Duchess, who was a HUGE fan of dogs and raised in Mount Vernon, the festival will take over the 200 block of East Biddle Street on Sunday, June 7th, from noon to 4 p.m.

Make sure to take your dog. Events include:

* The Duchess of Windsor Museum will be open for tours.

* Zippy Larson's Duchess Walking Tour. The $10 admission benefits Baltimore Heritage, Inc.

* Baltimore Grand Houses for Sale Tour from 12 PM until 4 PM. Pick up a brochure at 206 East Biddle Street.

*Animal Rescue, Inc. will host an adoption table in front of 200 East Biddle Street.

At the end of the day, two dogs will be named Duke and Duchess of the festival.

After the festival, at 5pm there will be a cocktail party at The Adele Corner House. Casual attire and outrageous jewelry is recommended. The suggested donation is $20 and all proceeds will benefit Animal Rescue, Inc, a non-profit organization.

Duchess of Windsor (aka Bessie Wallis Warfield) was married to Prince Edward Duke of Windsor, formerly King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom. The Duchess was a socialite, born in 1896 (I had her birthday wrong at first but readers corrected me -- thanks readers!, JR), who grew up in the historic neighborhood of Mt. Vernon in Baltimore, Maryland.

The event is sponsored PNC Bank, Midtown Development Corporation, Baltimore Heritage, Inc. Pretentious Pooch and Healthy Neighborhoods Inc.

Grocery shopping to help Baltimore dogs and cats

If you've got a trip to Whole Foods Harbor East in your future, make it tomorrow, Wednesday, and a portion of your purchase will benefit the dogs and cats of the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter.

Whole Foods Harbor East will be donating 5 percent of their sales for the day to BARCS. Also, shelter volunteers will be outside the store with dogs available for adoption and information on bite prevention and disaster planning for those with companion animals.

If you want to adopt a dog at the store, you can even start the adoption process right there in the middle of the organic, gourmet, chi-chi goodness. (Tip: You can bond with your new dog real fast if you buy them a grass-fed steak!)

Whole Foods Harbor East is located at 1001 Fleet Street.  The store is open from 8 am to 10 pm,

Hamilton Tavern benefit to help Recycled Love

There's unfortunately no shortage of dogs and cats that need help in Baltimore.

Just today we told you about Phoenix, a pit bull puppy that was doused with gasoline and set on fire. The dog is fighting to live and BARCS is paying for her medical care.

Recycled Love is another local rescue organization that has done much work to treat homeless animals that need medical care and to find them homes. The group helped find families to take in some of Michael Vick's dogs.

Recycled Love is holding a fundraiser next Wednesday, June 3 at Hamilton Tavern, 5517 Harford Road.

From 4:30 until close, a portion of the restaurant's proceeds will benefit the organization's efforts to help animals. There will also be a silent auction with donations from area businesses.

Two of Recycled Love's adoptable pets, including Marvin, pictured here, will be at the benefit for folks to meet. Picture of Marvin courtesy of Recycled Love. For more information on Marvin, click here.

Black ties and furry tails

The Baltimore Humane Society is redefining 'black tie and tails.'

The organization is opening the door for people and their "well-behaved" pets at its Not-So-Black Tie & Tails Gala, set for June 6.

Wonder what they mean by well-behaved? Extending the pinky paw when sipping from the wine glass? Asking politely to cut in before dancing with someone's date?

In any case, the gala, at $100 a ticket, will include hors doeuvres and buffets provided by Charles Levine Caterers & Events, music & dancing by On The Edge, and a silent & live auction. Guests will also have the chance to meet the Humane Society staff and board of directors and tour the grounds.

People must buy tickets in advance. For more information on the event and to buy tickets, go to the group's website.

Celebrate the shelled among us

The Humane Society of the United States marks World Turtle Day on Saturday, celebrating all the things people are doing to protect turtles and turtlekind.

Just in time for the party, my colleague Mike Dresser who does the Getting There blog, breaks some interesting turtle news.

To be nice to turtles, the State Highway Administration is creatively mowing the grass near the Hampstead Bypass project which is quite close to the habitat of the the threatened bog turtle. It's having goats chew down the grass.

The agency apparently considered using cows but voted them down as "too big." And the turtles said they'd rather work with goats.

The Humane Society, by the way, offers information for people considering getting a turtle as a pet.

A male Eastern Box Turtle moves across a path at Wildwood Lake Sanctuary in Harrisburg, Pa. The red eye of this turtle indicates that it is male. The Eastern box turtle is a step closer to being named Pennsylvania's official state reptile because of a campaign launched by a suburban Philadelphia elementary school class. Who will be at Tuesday's leash law hearing?

The Baltimore City Council leash law hearing -- postponed during the great downtown flood of 2009 -- is rescheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

The council will be hearing testimony on reducing the leash law fine from $1,000 to $250. As it stands now, the fine is also $1,000 for those who fail to scoop their dog's poo. This is a hugely controversial issue for dog owners and park users in Baltimore.

I just checked the online petition against the fines. Looks like more than 1,500 people have signed. Are any Unleashed readers planning to be there? I plan on going and will report back on what happens.

It's National Pet Week!

Though those of us who call PetsMart a home away from home might argue that every week is Pet Week, this week is actually officially National Pet Week.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the Auxiliary to the AVMA created the holiday of sorts in 1981 to promote responsible pet ownership, celebrate the human-animal bond, and promote public awareness of veterinary medicine.

All great causes. Maybe we pet-lovers can observe the holiday by giving our dogs and cats an extra head-rub, remembering to book a preventive exam at the vet or maybe making a donation to a local animal advocacy organization.

The Auxiliary to the American Veterinary Medical Association holds a contest each year to select the official poster of National Pet Week. The poster shown here was 2009's winning entry.

The cute poster is available here.

Bailout plan...for dogs

One dog food company wants anyone who's recently lost their job to know that their pet doesn't have to suffer.

Dogswell, a California-based pet food company, is offering free food to unemployed pet owners.

The company created the program after realizing that during the recession, an increasing number of families have found themselves struggling to care for their pets -- and some are even giving them up for adoption or abandoning them.

From now through May 15, Dogswell is giving away one free bag of dry dog food to the first 10,000 unemployed American pet owners. The company has set a goal of giving away a total of 10,000 bags of its dog food, or $200,000 worth.

To take advantage of this offer, eligible pet-owners must submit a "Bow-Wow Bailout" redemption form, available here.

Here's a selection of the adorable pets I saw parading around Mount Vernon this morning:
