And the winners are.....

I've got a little housecleaning to attend to...the winners of the last two Animal House Fridays.

On Friday, when we were talking about Take Your Dog to Work Day -- and imagining what it would be like if our pet actually came into the office -- Sue took the big prize. She said Honey, her golden retriever, would be something of a disaster in her Hamden yarn store, Lovely Yarns. Sue wins a copy of Pretty Pet-Friendly, a book that promises ways to keep ones home "stylish and spotless" despite the doggy or kitty. (Let us know if any of the tips work, Sue!)

And then, last week, when we were playing movie critic and evaluating Peter Hermann and Mike Catalini's work on Mashu vs. The Bad Medicine, Casey easily won the prize. Her review of the video would give the Sun's Michael Sragow a run for his critiquing money. She wins a book about another animal who's had quite a ride in the video world -- A Lion Called Christian.

Thanks for playing everyone. Looking forward to this week's installment. But also wondering if we should perhaps postpone it because of the holiday weekend. Hmm.

Animal House Friday: 9-5 with furry ones

Alright. So we know Take Your Dog To Work Day is more or less a bust in the Baltimore area.

Thanks to allergies, unwilling bosses, the uh, reality of having mutts running around a work environment, this more or less isn't happening.

However! That doesn't mean we can't imagine how it would have been had we brought our dogs, kitties, birds, goldfish, ferrets -- whatever, into the office to hang with Mr. Burns all day. For this Animal House Friday, and the usual prize enticements that come with it, let's talk about how we think our animals would do, had we brought them into the office.

I'm pretty sure my kitties would be something of a disaster. Pumpkin would start jumping on desks, in garbage cans and eating everyone's half-finished sandwiches and desk candy. Leo would probably be trying to balance himself atop the one-inch cubicle boundary markers -- right before he started shredding all the paper in the tri-state area. (And the Sun, as you might guess, has a LOT of paper...)

Animal House Friday: Calling all movie critics

It's Animal House Friday again...and we're gonna try something different. I am head over heels in love with the video of Peter Hermann's kitty, Mashu, doing battle against the evil medicine hidden in her tuna.

I'd like people to watch the video, and then comment on it in their best movie reviewer voice, critiquing the kitty's performance, Peter's filming skills, the editing, score and videography.

Of course, if anyone has any ideas to help poor Peter get that kitty to take the medicine without an ordeal, that would be great, too.

As usual, one of the commenters will win a fabulous Unleashed prize.

Animal House Friday: Moving...from a furry perspective

Meredith, mistress of the B-More Green blog and of handsome Dizzy, will soon be moving to a new house. She's worried about how to introduce the somewhat skittish doggy to the new digs. It took him a while to get adjusted to the old place and she hates to upset his world -- but the move is non-negotiable. Particularly since he's not helping with the mortgage.

For those of you who've moved before with dogs, cats, birds -- how did it go? What sorts of things did you do in advance to prepare your pet? Walk them by the new place and let them sniff around? Day at the spa?

How about during the move? Did you bring the pet over while you were moving in, or did you leave him or her at, say, a friend's place to avoid the chaos?

And afterward, did you do anything in particular to let the furry one know that this was now home?

In the name of Animal House Friday, I'm hoping you'll share advice AND stories....especially fun ones. There's a prize in it, as usual, for one lucky commenter, to be drawn later this afternoon.

And the winner is....

Lauren!!!!

Lauren said that her all-time favorite TV, movie or commercial  animal was Lad from Don't Eat the Daisies. She really reached back for that one. But what an awesome, shaggy pup! Check him out in the cast photo.

Actually, a lot of people gave props to the vintage pets. Nick mentioned Petey from Little Rascals. Dawn loved Toto from The Wizard of Oz.

Debbie even gave a shout-out to Mr. Ed. Of course.

For playing along, Lauren wins a copy of The Smartest Animals on the Planet, a cool, new, really informative book on some of the amazing things animals can do. Interestingly enough, no acting animals made the book. Maybe I missed it when I leafed through.

Looking forward to next week's installment! In the meantime, let me know if you think of any fun topics that you'd like to see thrown out there for Animal House discussion.

Animal House Friday: Famous pets of film, TV

I apologize for being a little late with Animal House Friday. I'm on assignment in Ocean City and there's an annoying lack of Wi-Fi. But I've made it to a Panera, mainly to log on and fulfill my Animal House duties.

So I was thinking about famous pets. If you had to choose an all-time favorite movie, commercial or TV -- or, why not, Broadway -- pet, which one would it be.

I always had a HUGE soft spot for Eddie, the Jack Russell terrier on Frazier. He was simply adorable. And what a natural actor!

Do you have a favorite? If so, why? Or, on the flip side, a pet that you could never quite stand?

Do you think your pet has star quality?

Let Unleashed know. Share your thoughts -- whatever they may be -- and be eligible for a fantabulous, amazing, glorious, prize, to be selected later this afternoon once I escape the cold, rainy beach.  I'll give you a little more time today since I posted so late....

Kelsey Grammer sits with cutie, Moose, who played his dad's dog, Eddie, on Frasier.

And the winner is....

Emily!!!!

Emily, the owner of a sensitive bulldog, is the big winner in yesterday's Animal House Friday. As you might recall, we discussed the pros and cons of putting cats and dogs on vegan or vegetarian diets.

Today's winner, since I'm not at work, was selected by Pumpkin. While he was sunning himself on the window sill in the bathroom, I came in and dumped the contestants' names, each on folded pieces of paper, on the vanity. Little P, who's a serious omnivore, hustled right over and sniffed the paper. He batted a few around. Sniffed some more. Then batted one right into the sink. He ran to the sink and lifted it out with his teeth. That was the winner -- Emily!

Emily is the winner of a lovely collapsible travel bowl for doggies. It looks nothing like the bowl the pigeons are bathing in to the right.  It also looks nothing like Bo Obama's bedazzled new bowl.

Thanks everyone who commented. See you all next Friday -- and hopefully before then, too.

Animal House Friday: Is Fluffy Vegan?

In ABC's new show The Goode Family, the dog, Che, is forbidden from eating meat. The family's vegan, hence, the dog is too.

(Che is something less than enthusiastic about the "organic flaxseed dog food" his people impose on him. When no one's looking, he snacks on unassuming neighborhood animals.)

Vegans and vegetarians who force their meatless ways on cats and dogs who live for protein seem to be rather extreme. That said, I'll admit that when I'm food shopping for Leo and Pumpkin, I tend to choose the chicken and fish varieties and skip the beef. It's because with everything I read about the quality of mass-produced beef, I wouldn't want to eat it myself -- and I figure the stuff that makes it into a cat food tin is even worse.

So the kitties don't get any. I wonder if I'm unfairly depriving them of something they'd love.... I also tend to shy away from the Chicken and Liver flavor just cause it sounds yucky...to me. The kitties would probably do back flips for it. Meanwhile, I always buy the 'Shrimp and Salmon Chowder' flavor. Yum!

I'm wondering, for Animal House Friday, if anyone else tends to pass down their food issues onto their pets. Any veggie dogs or cats out there? Or anyone who thinks that the very idea of it is insipid? Also, the flavors of dog and cat food these days are pretty hilarious themselves -- clearly designed for the human....no?

Write in. As always, there's a prize out there for one lucky commenter.

And the winner is.....

Ian!!!

Ian was one of a great heap of responses that came in this morning and this afternoon. Everyone had tons of nifty ideas about where in town to dine with the doggy. Seriously, you have to read the comments. Tons of suggestions -- and some are places I'll bet you wouldn't have thought of.

Ian recommended On the Hill Cafe in Bolton Hill. He reported that they treated his dog extremely well last time he went there -- complete with a bowl of water for the pooch on the house. Nice.

For his efforts, Ian, and his lucky, non-thirsty, dog, win a set of political dog toys made by Doggy Hoots. There's a Barack Obama, a Hillary Clinton and a John McCain. They all squeak. I hope Ian writes back to let us know which doll his dog chews up the most -- and whether or not that's a hint at his political leanings.

Today's winner was chosen by Reality Check's very own Sarah Kelber. She tore herself temporarily away from the drama of So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol to help me out. To make it official and kind of Unleashed-y, she did the drawing with bunny ears on. I'm not sure why she had bunny ears at the ready, right at her desk, but she did.

Looking forward to next week's installment!

And the winner is.....

I'm sure the anticipation has been building all weekend for the big reveal on who won Friday's Animal House.

Well, the winner is Leigh!!!

She and Wally, a dog who loves himself a peanut-butter-filled Kong, will soon be able to sit back and enjoy movie together. As you might recall, Friday's Animal House was about "things your pet can't live without."

Leigh and Wally have won a DVD of the movie Hotel for Dogs. We're throwing in a squeaky bone chew toy for Wally. I suggest Leigh consider popcorn.

Beverage maven Rob Kasper, known in the Sun blog world for Kasper on Tap , helped me draw the winner from the "hat."

Thanks everyone for entering. And I apologize for the delay in announcing the winner. I was on deadline with a story on Friday.... Occasionally news might get in the way of our blog fun...but only temporarily.

Looking forward to this Friday's round.

Animal House Friday: What my pet can't live without

My Leo has a little something that's terribly special to him. More meaningful to him than I am, probably. And perhaps more important than food on his priority list. It's his little red pom-pom ball.

The kitty loves this pom-pom like nobody's business. It's actually the inside of what used to be one of those glitter-tinsel balls. He ate all the tinsel off, piece by piece, until the bald ball was all that remained. The best part -- his Tootsie Roll in the middle of the lollipop.

Anyway, Leo loves this toy. He loses it for a few weeks, under the sofa, under the oven, and then it reappears. The joyous coming together of cat and pom-pom, this is what Peaches and Herb were singing about in Reunited.

For Animal House Friday, I thought it would be fun to talk about the toys -- or mundane objects -- that make your furry ones go bonkers. As usual, all commenters with stories in by about 3 p.m. will be eligible for a prize. Something better than a pom-pom -- though Leo would beg to differ.

This Aqua Garden by Drinkwell was a gadget for a cat's amusement that recently came on the market. The cat seems to like it, but not as much as Leo likes his pom-pom. Photo by Associated Press.

And the winner is....

It's Shannon!! Her pitbull Lucy didn't eat anything bad but her parent's dog Duke sure did. In fact, from Shannon's description, it sounds like there's nothing that Duke wouldn't swallow. Butter. Eggshells. Half a cake.... Wow!!

Susan Reimer, queen of the Garden Variety blog, washed the dirt off of her hands long enough to help me pick today's winner. We had such a good showing!

I'm thinking seriously of making What My Pet Ate a semi-regular installment. We logged in stories of pets who ate everything from wood to presents to dirty socks and chocolate matzah. Good work people!! Good work pets!!!

For her efforts, Shannon wins a copy of No Pet Left Behind: The Sherpa Guide for Traveling with Your Best Friend. Thanks everyone for participating. Already looking forward to next week!

Animal House Friday: I can't believe you ate that!

Happy TGIF!

As a guest blogger and owner of a forever hungry kitty, I've been thinking a lot lately about what animals eat. On purpose. By accident. Out of boredom. For spite. It can get pretty crazy.

When he was a kitten, I realized to my extreme dismay one morning that Pumpkin had eaten an entire bag of kitty treats overnight. He'd found the sealed bag, chewed a hole in the bottom, and wolfed the entire sack of salmon flavored tidbits. When I saw the empty bag on the floor, I knew. When he didn't want his breakfast, I definitely knew. We got real friendly with the vet that week....

And the winner is...

 MARY!

Not me, but Mary the owner of Peapod, the sweet Chihuahua featured in Collared earlier this week. (If you missed it, click here for the scoop on Peapod and discover how she earned her name.)

We loved learning that Peapod has "an outfit suitable for most occasions." (She is doing better than we are.) And we're eager to see a picture of her in that pink lace dress she wears on dates.

Today's fabulous prize is a bag of dog treats from the Baltimore Dog Bakery. At the Maryland SPCA's March for the Animals, I caught up with bakery owner Key Wagner and checked out these all-natural goodies. They're fit for human consumption, so I gave the low-fat apple cinnamon snacks  the sniff test. They smelled yummy, sort of like breakfast cereal. (Good thing we bought the "little bites" size. We must have sensed that a tiny dog would be this week's winner.)

Congrats to Mary, and thanks to everyone who commented. What great stories! I loved imagining your pets in these get-ups. If you have pictures, please upload them here and message us at unleashed@baltsun.com so we can alert our pet-loving crowd that they are there.

If you didn't win this week, don't lose faith. Next Friday we'll be back with more Animal House fun and pet-related prizes.

Animal House Friday: Do clothes make the dog?

We've heard of Christmas in July, but Halloween in May? Between the Flowermart's Pet Parade and Mascot Contest tomorrow and the Maryland SPCA's March for the Animals pet costume contest last week, it's prime time for dogs in dresses. (Costumes are optional for pets at the Flowermart.) In honor of these events, the theme of this Animal House Friday will be: Pets that wear clothes and the owners who love them (and dress them).

At the March for the Animals, I saw a Pomeranian barking her tiny head off at a shy pit bull. I thought: She looks just like Phoebe, a dog featured in Collared the week before. Turns out I was right. In a crowd of 4,000, I spotted a dog friend I'd made but never actually met. What gave her away? The dress she was wearing with the lace trim and pearl buttons. (Phoebe, as you may recall, has an extensive wardrobe, including a bikini.)

The goofiest costume my sweet dog, Gracie, ever wore was a mish-mash of things: An American Girl Doll first communion veil with psychedelic sunglasses and an old silk scarf. (You can see a picture of it by clicking here.) Credit for the ensemble goes to my nieces, who as children were convinced that Gracie was more doll than dog. My sister dressed Gracie up as Spiderman the Halloween before Gracie died. The hood kept slipping off, and arthritis had slowed her gait, but that costume said what I believed was still true about Gracie: She was a superhero.

What's the silliest thing your pet has ever worn? Or does your pet have a wardrobe as extensive as Paris Hilton's? Comment below and you will be entered in today's Animal House drawing. We'll pick a name at 3:30 p.m., and one lucky commenter will win a pet-related prize. You can also upload a picture here.

Photo courtesy of Maryland SPCA: Porky came dressed as a genie and won the costume contest during the Maryland SPCA's March for the Animals. The event raised $353,000 for animal causes.

And the winner is ...

BUCKY.

Reality Check Sarah pulled his name out of the bag, and his gift is (not two tickets to the hairball exhibit but) Itty Bitty Kitty Ditties.

This new book combines pen-and-ink illustrations by Alex Boies with witty poems by Tim Hodapp. One involving Opal the cat mentions that she "coughed up a few hairs," making it the perfect gift for Animal House Friday/National Hairball Awareness Day.

Congratulations to Bucky, and thanks to all who commented. Look for more prizes next Friday.

Animal House Friday

catToday brings together two glorious occasions: Animal House Friday, when one lucky commenter will win a pet-themed prize, and National Hairball Awareness Day.

I ask: If you have a cat, how can you be unaware of hairballs? You hear them on their way up -- the hacking, the coughing, the feline distress signals. Or you're walking along, say, headed to the kitchen and you spot one. Worse yet, you don't see it and (gross-out alert) step in it.

Hairballs are actually called trichobezoars. These nondigested masses are found in animals other than cats, including horses, chickens and cows, as well as humans. They occur when something (food, medicine, hair) can't make it through the narrow opening between the stomach and large intestine.

Here's where it gets interesting: You can learn the truth about hairballs at an exhibit and "hands-on activity" at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington on Monday (April 27) at noon. Visitors that day will, are you ready, "have the opportunity to handle an actual hairball," according to the museum's Web site. (For more details, click here.)

The exhibit is up through May 4, but if you can't make it, there's a virtual hairball exhibit on the museum's site. You can see it by clicking here. I've checked it out, and here's some advice: Avoid around meal time.

Have a hairball story to share? A solution to the problem in your cat, horse or cow? Or simply want to weigh in on why someone would go to a museum to touch a hairball from a chicken? All comments welcome (even off-topic ones). Remember: It's prize day. Comment below and your name will be entered in a drawing for a nifty gift. I'll draw the name at 3 p.m. Please include your e-mail so I can contact you if you're today's winner. (The e-mail will remain private; we just need it to reach you.)

Oh, and (cough, cough) Happy Hairball Day.

And the winner is...

JASON.

He won this week's Animal House Friday prize: two Rubber Neckers dog toys.

In desperate bagless moments, he said, "We have stolen the plastic newspaper bags from people's doorsteps (we would look for the doorstep with multiple bags out side, figuring that no one lived there or they just didn't care)."

Thanks to Clef Notes Tim Smith (owner of two wonderful cats named Eartha and Felix) for selecting a name out of a plastic bag. Come to think of it, maybe we should send the bag along with the prize.

Thanks, most of all, for your comments. If you didn't win this week, don't despair. More prizes to come next Friday.

Why cleaning up after your dog can be hard to do

Whew...we need a breather from the intensity of feeling expressed on Unleashed this week. The city's new $1,000 fine for pet owners who let their dogs off leash or fail to pick up after them has tempers flying.

Since it's Animal House Friday and since Unleashed readers are all wonderful pet owners who always clean up after their dogs, we wanted to lighten the mood a bit.

We've all faced that awkward bagless moment. The time when you forgot to bring one, or you threw it away and realized too late that you needed it for, um, round #2. What's a responsible dog owner to do?

Tim Swift, A&E editor and frequent guest poster to this blog, found himself in that spot recently and frantically rummaged through his knapsack. The best he could come up with? Pages that he ripped out of his reporter's notebook and used, he says, as "a makeshift paper glove." He raced to the nearest dumpster (and then to the drugstore for some Purell).

Do you have a funny story of some length you've gone to to pick up after your dog? Did bad weather play a part? Was it one of those dark-of-night searches?

Comment below and you could win today's Animal House Friday prize: Two fabulous Rubber Neckers dog toys (above) from FatCatInc.com. They're great for playing Tug-O-War.

The deadline is 3 p.m. We'll draw a name after that and post who won. (Please make sure to include your e-mail address, so we can contact you to send you your prize. Don't worry. It won't be public.)

Animal House Friday: What should Obama name the dog?

cappy

It's Animal House Friday -- another day for silliness and a chance to win a prize for the lucky commenter.

This week we waited and waited, thinking surely the little girls at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. would get their dog. After all, Mom had said they would get the dog after spring break. Dad had promised the dog would be there after he returned from the G20 Summit in Europe.

But, so far, the dog hasn't arrived.

Soon, soon, the Obamas say.

OK, so let's help them along a bit with coming up with a name for the first pooch so when he does arrive, they won't have to say, "Here, dog!"

Lots of folks have been giving suggestions. The Product Naming Blog came up with RahmRod (after Obama's advisers Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod). In February Unleashed readers suggested a long list including Bark Obama and Hope and Audacity. Gambling911, a Web site for gambling news, puts even odds on Hope being the name.

What are your ideas? Give us your answer by 3 p.m. in order to have a chance for a prize. Be sure to include your e-mail address so I can contact you if you win.

Animal House Friday: Are you a dog person or a cat person?

cat

It's Animal House Friday, and that means it's time for silliness and prizes. In an earlier post this week, former Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer described himself as a "dog person." Today, I want to talk about the differences between cat people and dog people. And for the heck of it, let's include the bird people, reptile people and small animal people, too.

So, to be considered for one of our fabulous prizes please fill in the blanks:

A dog person is someone who ____________________.

A cat person is someone who_____________________.

A (name your animal) person is someone who ______________.

Respond by 3 p.m. and include your e-mail so I can notify you if you win. (I won't publish it.) Good luck.

The Animal House Friday winner is...

LORI.

She was already helping the environment by buying biodegradable doggie bags, as she shared with us in an earlier post, and now she is getting rewarded for it. She was selected in the random drawing to receive today's fabulous prize: a brand-new leash with a built-in holder for plastic bags.

Congratulations, Lori. We see many happy walks in your future. Thanks for commenting.

Next week there will be another chance to win, so stay tuned.

Animal House Friday: an environmentalist dilemma

plasticIt's Animal House Friday. Time for silliness and prizes.

I have a problem that I'll bet a lot of dog owners have. In the last few months, I've made a real effort to be more green by using cloth bags when I go grocery shopping. But now I'm nearly out of plastic bags that I use to pick up after my dog. I didn't think that would ever happen. I used to have a big box of plastic bags. Now I sometimes have to wait for my morning paper to get a bag before I take my dog out for a walk. Or sometimes I leave the cloth bags at home in order to load up on plastic bags at the grocery story so I'll have enough to get me through the week.

Some cities have banned plastic bags, and that's been discussed in Baltimore. But what is a dog owner to do?

Send your suggestion by 3 p.m. to be considered for one of our fabulous prizes. Please include your e-mail address so I can get back to you. Don't worry, it won't be public.

And the winner is...

CATHERINE.

Reality Check Sarah pulled Catherine's name out of the bag, making her the winner of our second Animal House Friday drawing.

Her prize: a DVD of Beverly Hills Chihuahua. She mentioned that her son has "a lovely ant farm." We hope he and any other siblings in the house like dog movies.

The Baltimore Sun's Chris Kaltenbach (owner of a 10-year-old Basenji named Foxy) only gave the movie 1 1/2 stars.

His review begins, "It's hard to go wrong with a movie full of talking dogs. But the makers of Beverly Hills Chihuahua sure try." He, of course, never got to see the all-new animated short and bloopers on the DVD.

Speaking of Chihuahuas, the cutest Chihuahua I have ever seen is coming in our Collared feature on Monday. Even his name is cute: Kilo. Get ready.

Animal House: A Sea-Monkey tale

Never mind the Obama family's First Dog. I'm eager to hear about your first pet. It's Animal House Friday (Prizes, prizes!), so the sillier the story, the better. Here's mine:

I always thought my first was Snoopy, a willful Lhasa Apso

But I was wrong.

My first pets were actually Sea-Monkeys.

The debut of Animal House

We made it! It's Friday, and that means the debut of Animal House, a weekly feature where we celebrate the silly side of our pets, examine the offbeat, share news of the weird from the animal world.

To put it in pet terms: If we were a dog, this would be the equivalent of a good belly rub: as a cat, we'd be getting scratched in that sweet spot right between our ears and whiskers.

We begin by discussing bad breath in dogs (and cats), and what can be done about it.

Jill Rosen is a reporter at The Baltimore Sun. During her nearly 20 years in journalism, she has covered news and features — including a surprising number of stories that involved animals. There were the dog Christmas carolers in State College, Pa. There were the hounds who toured with a production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The story of a preschool teacher at Baltimore’s Father Kolbe School who had to replace her class guinea pig, who died over the winter holiday. A harrowing tale of what it was like to make homemade pet food ...

Though her clean freak of a mother refused to allow her to get a dog, she has had a number of pets through the years, including goldfish named Bob and Fingle, a betta fish named Ichabod, a wild rat terrier named Wendel, who she shared with a roommate, and, currently, sweet, sweet kitties named Leo Sesame and Milo Pumpkin and a little rescued pup named Teddy Bean. She, Leo, Pumpkin and Teddy Bean live in Baltimore.
